Dominic Chianese, Uncle Junior's actor, is actually an accomplished Classical Italian Opera singer. He even has an album. Dude's got golden pipes.

I love the scenes at funeral where Tony is done with Paulie and Christopher’s shit. Paulie simply being rude bringing that up at a time like that. Christopher in a way making things about himself. Similarly to Tony blaming himself for AJ’s panic attacks when the prospect of Meadow needing therapy/counseling he immediately was against it. Anytime Meadow succeeds in school he credits Carmella for it. Your discussion made me really think about how Tony wants to have as little influence over his kids as possible. Apologies for the 2 long comments just a big fan of your guys’ reactions and discussions on Sopranos

you got the chess metaphor for Jackie the first lines "I think you're done for" "But we just started" is cold as hell cause Jackie is young ("just started" life) but he's about to die ("done for")

Meadow’s attitude on the mafia situation is interesting. If you’ve noticed she’ll talk shit directly to her immediate family especially her father. But anytime someone else starts making side remarks she gets super defensive. When Tony got arrested in the finale of Season 2 she said she didn’t care what her friends thought about it. Here when Jackie Jr’s sister starts being skeptical about Jackie’s murder exactly what Meadow did with her mother earlier in the episode got super defensive. It’s like she can talk shit about her family but not others.

It was mainly because of the outsider who was there, if it was just his sister she probably does not say anything. Although the "outsider" is a cousin, just someone she was not certain if she was kosher or not

They way Tony mispronounces litigious is brilliant. You can write in the script to do that, but pulling it off so convincingly is why he was a marvelous talent.

Favorite season is 6, when taken as a whole. I know the creators consider it two seasons, it was HBO who made them call it season 6A and B to not pay more to the actors, but they are way more interconnected than any other seasons. But a lot of people would say season 5, probably. Either way, as some commenter said, remember the "thoroughbred" comment about Tracee, you'll see why it's relevant down the line. The reason Sopranos doesn't end with cliffhangers is because Chase almost always operated on the assumption that every season was the last one. First season was telling the story he had for a movie, strecthed into a whole season. He didn't expect to get picked up for a second season, and when he did, he only planned for that season. By season 4 he was like "yeah, I don't think I can do another one". Apparently, season six exists thanks to Terence Winter's greed and/or money troubles, since he didn't want to let go of the paycheck and pushed for ideas about antoher season until something caught the interest of Chase.

Still makes me lough tbh, how Vito, out of all people, sneaked on Jackie on the empty street. The angle he came from, he must have been just a couple meters left from Jackie's point of view. And how he flies to the snow that already had blood splattered over it, and the gun used. Sopranos doesn't really do scenes like that, but seemed like a perfect end of the character.

When this episode first aired in May 2001, Fairuza Balk played the undercover FBI agent sent to befriend Adriana. In June 2002, 3 months before season 4 debuted, HBO began showing this episode with Lola Glaudini replacing Balk in those scenes so that the audience would recognize Glaudini when the new episodes began airing. The big difference between the two versions is that Glaudini wasn't actually acting with Drea De Matteo in that store scene because they just recycled the footage of De Matteo instead of having her reshoot her part.

David Chase said this about the music selection at the end of this finale: “That singing thing is about how all over the world people engage in pure sentimentality. Everyone loves a good cry. And I don’t mean to denigrate funerals or death. It also has something to do with entertainment, filmed entertainment. Music can be used so manipulatively. And Junior, who is the most selfish character in the cast, is pouring his heart out. Didn’t mean a thing. Just to wallow in the moment … Pop music is so abused and overused, manipulated and employed in the service of the devil. It was to give the audience a laugh about how they are being manipulated everyday.” so after reading this i ended up siding with Meadow on he she was feeling about the funeral at the end, which nobody cared, everyone is laughing and drinking and crying at Junior singing. in the words of Sonny from Bronx Tale: “Nobody cares.”

It's interesting that Tony compared people in his business (the mafia) to being like soldiers in a past therapy session, and here we see AJ being sent to a military school where they are obviously training to be like soldiers. Tony says in therapy that AJ would never survive in his business and the next scene we get is AJ at the school; it's almost like (consciously or subconsciously) he's sending AJ to military school so he could take after him and run the business once he's gone. Even though Tony says he does not want his kids in the mafia, perhaps there is an underlying projection of rage onto AJ. That is to say, Tony is training AJ to be in the mafia as a punishment for not being the type of kid he wants. He chooses to continue the cycle from father to son since Tony himself did not have a choice unlike AJ leading to some resentment. Also, James Gandolfini's delivery of “that putrid, rotten fuckin’ Soprano gene" in this episode is one of the most memorable lines of the series for me. It's just perfect and illstrustes how much shame Tony must feel on a daily bases which probably contributes to his issues of anger and depression.

Great reactions as always! On the theme of the young trying to make their mark & go up the ranks in the mob there were examples in each season: S1 - Brendan Filone & Chris (Junior's trucking) although Chris backs out, Brendan goes ahead & suffers eternal consequences 😯 S2 - Matt Bevilaqua & Sean's shooting of Chris🤦‍♀️ S3 - Jackie Jr & Dino's failed heist on the card game, again Chris features. Chris also had a smaller hand in encouraging Jackie's wannabe mob life - getaway driver of the charity robbery, the convo at the pizza parlour going totally against Tony's wishes for Jackie and trying to recruit him saying "no one has the right to tell anybody how to make a living". As you point out lots of back stabbing & internal fighting goes on in this "family". The accuracy of Jackie Jr's sister's description of his killer "some fat f* in see through socks" 21:34 was very perceptive, that is Vito down to the socks 😂 Looking forward to S4! Let's go!

The singing in different languages at the end signifies the ingrained hypocrisy. Most of them don’t understand a word of what’s being sung and yet they are fooling themselves into understanding the meaning of the song. Although their bloodline may be Italian, they’re - in effect - American (2nd or more generation) ‘wannabe’ Italians, most not even speaking the language. In effect, they could be listening to anything, in any language. I believe that was the point of the conclusion of the scene.

i made a comment when you guys first started about how every season is distinct, they all possess their own unique identity. back then i said season 4 is the season that's (in my opinion) most like the mob films that the characters idolize. a big part of this was of course 9/11 - visually and tonally you will notice a difference. things also move at a much slower pace, but the change suits the show incredibly well. the structure also changes seeing as how it's the beginning of the second half. i didn't appreciate season 4 on my first watch, took me a while to get through it because it's so methodical. now it's my favorite season (besides 2). i'm extremely excited to see what you guys think of the stylistic changes and the direction that the narrative takes.

Hey, Abe...apropos of nothing, is that an Owala water bottle? Just last night I was shopping for a new one on Amazon, looking at different brands. I pretty much settled on the Owala Freesip 32 oz even though it's a little pricier than my old Simple Modern. I even picked the Marshmallow color which is what yours looks like! If yours is an Owala could you take a sec to let me know if you like yours or if there's anything you don't like about it? I haven't ordered yet but will in the next few days. Glad Charlie got better. Hope you feel better soon. You're on the right track staying hydrated. Maybe try hot tea with honey & lemon too. ☕️🍯🍋 It helps! I'm also hoping Davi has a strong immune system. You guys are bringing out my maternal instincts.🩵✨️

Hi! Yes, Owala bottle, I’ve had it for months and I love it. The one downside I have with it is actually the color. It’s basically an off white which is totally fine but the bottom of my bottle is now pretty scratched and scuffed with dark marks. I tend to be careless with how I carry the bottle around and stuff so maybe a more careful person wouldn’t have the same issue, but genuinely the only thing I’d change is the color!

Well I mean Jackie technically was involved in hard drugs unless the kids nowadays look at Molly as something less 😂 . To defend Tony: while I'd imagine most drug dealers (especially Molly dealers) probably won't end with a dramatic and violent death? Jackie Jr was guaranteed to. Even if he was selling in Brainerd, Minnesota (or any less cut throat of a market) I feel would he would still be too hot headed / incompetent etc to ever have a peaceful life as a career drug dealer lol
