Nissan Titan 5.6 is the last real half ton truck in 2022. Designed and manufactured in the USA, No auto start/stop, no cylinder deactivation, big powerful V8, fully boxed frame, steel body, hydraulic power steering, comfortable interior, Safety Shield 360 standard and the best warranty in the business.

The 5 liter Cummins V8 was originally intended for Ram's smaller 1500, but FCA decided in favor of the more efficient (FCA) 3.0 Ecodiesel instead. Cummins had already invested so much time and money into R and D for their 5 liter diesel that it only made sense to put it in something else and that’s where Nissan came in. Just so happens Nissan was working on a Titan XD which slots somewhere between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton truck and this 5 liter diesel was perfect.

I owned a 2017 Pro-4x Cummins until last year and loved it... right up until I experienced similar turbo problems (both turbines are housed in the same unit) and FAR TOO FREQUENT exhaust filtration system problems. I was towing a trailer from Alaska to Kansas in one instance and my DEF system decided to fail near Edmonton, leaving my wife and I stranded in a foreign country for a week. Before that trip, the truck had been serviced five times for DEF injector failures and EGT valve problems. Those regulations are murder for these diesel engines.

The Nissan mechanics who have had to deal with this Cummins diesel have informed me that Cummins does not make a V8 Cummins diesel that was requested by Nissan and it was riddled with issues that is why they pulled away from having the VA Cummins in these trucks. Now if they go back in with a straight six Cummins in the same transmission the problem would be solved.

My brother lives in Indiana, near one of the Cummins plant. One of his old neighbors is an engineer for Cummins and told my brother that the V8 Cummins that went into the Titan XD was originally made to replace Dodge/Ram eco-diesel engine. Cummins did produce a prototype 4 cylinder turbo diesel that was installed in a 2nd gen Frontier. One of TFL's channels did a review on that 2nd gen Frontier with the Cummins diesel engine.

@@icosthop9998 I say it's more bad than good. One reason is that the emissions equipment hinders the true potential of that engine and the other reason being that Cummins basically abandoned the engine and offered little to no support to the consumers.
@kyleturner3709
@kyleturner3709 2 жыл бұрын
Cummins made the engine. Word on the street is that it was going to go into the ram 1500 ecodiesel but did not get good enough fuel ratings. This engine would have been produced with or without a Ram/Nissan deal. The Cummins ISV 5.0L V8 is also used in some BlueBird busses and Tiffin Allegro Motorhomes. The busses and motor homes both ran a different turbo setup than the Nissans got but basically the same motor otherwise. My best guess is they did not sell like anyone had hoped for. At the time this engine was being developed the US was also stricting emissions standards on all diesel engines. I am more than happy with my stock 2016 XD diesel 150k miles.

I'd have to agree. I picked up my 18th Toyota with a 2017 Trd pro tundra. Before that I test drove a new Titan sv. It is a fantastic truck for the money and has the best warranty for a truck on the market. With a bumper to bumper 100k warranty that makes them hard to beat. Still staying away from the new tundra. You can scream how they have tested them for years however at the end of the day. All turbos eventually fail and when they do. It's costly

@@robbalinski1606 The old turbos were also designed better and dissipated heat quicker. The quality of the bearings are nowhere near what they use to be. I'm not saying one couldn't theoretically last the life of the truck. I'm saying the quality has diminished and there will be issues out of the gate... Speaking of Gates by the way. The wastegate in the first release of the truck was addressed however like anything else. You're dealing with supply and demand shortages causing excessive lead times. I'll stick with my 5.7.

My 2016 white/silver Pro4x Cummins diesel just blew up completely. $16,550 to replace complete engine. Less than 140k miles. Looks just like that. I loved it till that happened. Other than the thousands I spent on DEF repairs constantly. I dont know what happened but its trashed now. I owe 30k on it still and now I'm out 17k. So I'm letting it go back. Could have been an amazing truck and it absolutely had lots of power and everything I ever wanted. But never again. Especially when they gave up on them after just a couple years.

In my opinion, the reason they did not sell many of these is simply the price. These were priced for nearly as much as a Ford F350 diesel at the time. So who is going to choose the Nissan over the Ford at a similar price point??? Also, they didn't get they expected fuel mileage. They were supposed to get 25 mpg. Apparently they only get 19 to 20 mph.
@jjc4577

spot on..I remember seeing these in the platinum XD trim when they came out and they had a Monroney at 65K and an ADM at 72K..8 of them were delivered and 7 were still on the lot after two weeks. The salesman I talked to said the same thing would happen, people would come look, see the sticker and go buy a Ford. There was supposedly a diesel Titan Work truck that would have a 40k price point, but that dealer couldn't get an allocation that included the work truck, it had to be ordered. The Ford dealer down the road had about 30 F250s in a work truck config that were in the 40-50k range.

They had overheating issues the first year which was fixed in 2021. I believe they are solid truck and I would put it first on my list. Just have to wait out the Ford gm 10 speed transmission. Maybe they will put an Allison in it for the new 3.0 diesel model.

There is one other truck with a Cummins Diesel engine and a Toyota transmission: the Dodge Ram 3500. The high-output engine that is exclusive to the 3500 is too powerful for the 68RFE, so it is paired with an Aisin 6-speed. It’s a much nicer truck with a lot more power and torque, and it is a hell of a lot more reliable than a Titan XD.
