I'm 45 and my first car was '71 Malibu. Swapped out the tired 307 for a lightly warmed over 350 backed with a TH350. Bench seat, 4 wheel drum, power steering and A/C. Ripped the dead air con out when I swapped the engine to save weight. I later planned to Vintage Air it before she decided she wanted to be a BBQ more than she wanted to continue to be my daily driver. Miss it to this day, but they're so out of range monetarily, I doubt I'll ever be able to own one again.

My first car, I was forced to buy, at exactly 16 years old, by my 28 year career Army Dad, was a $900, purple with black stripe 1973 Gremlin 232 6 cylijder auto. I told my Dad after almost daily getting into fights at school, that I was going to wrap it around a telephone pole if he didn't let me sell it. I used the $1000 I got for the Gremlin with a new $39.95 Earl Sheibs special paint job, and I than bought a $1000, black on black 1966 Chevelle Malibu, 327/375hp auto and went from being called not so nice names, to car wise, one of the coolest kids in high school. My cousin had a 70 Chevelle with the 454. Black on Black but no stripes. He later had thin pinstripes added to the fender and body lines front to back with little flourishes at the tips. For the 1st two years he had it he drove it a few times a week but then someone tried to steal it out of his driveway and he cleared out his garage and the car lived there for the next 45 or so years. The only time it came out was for maintenance or the 4th of July. He fired it up. Came down the driveway and as soon as the front tires hit the pavement he let it rip. Always 10 minutes later he would be back and put the car away in the garage for another year. When he passed away his new wife sold the car before any of the family could even ask about it. She HATED the Chevelle but loved the fact that it was worth a boatload of cash which she got when it sold.

The only cool thing about not having this car anymore, I sold it, after 3 months, for a little over 3 times what I bought it for. In the mid 80's This thing was THE CAR. Everywhere I went, EVERYWHERE, people wanted to buy it. If I parked it anywhere, it was always within my sight. Red with White Ralley stripes, Black interior and Cowl Induction. I put 2 sets of rear tires on it, in 3 months! LOL. Loved that thing but, could not justify the insurance as a High Schooler. The “rock crusher” was the Muncie M22 close ratio. It had the same close ratio as the M21 but the 22 had a different degree of gear teeth for 1st through 3rd gear. And 4th was the normal. Anyway the teeth change allowed it to handle much more torque but it did make the transmission have a distinct grinding or winding sound. Hence the name Rock Crusher. So if you notice the sound from the trans distinctly change from the first 3 girls than 4th then it’s a rock crusher. If it doesn’t then it’s an M21. But no one makes aftermarket 4 speeds with the close ratio gears of the M21 M22 muncie. 2:20, 1:64, 1:28, 1:00 are the gear ratios. It’s the closest ratio trans ever made by a manufacturer.

The cowl flap should stay closed when the engine is off. There was a solenoid to lock it when you turned the key off. With the key on, the solenoid unlocked the cowl function. Then, when the vacuum drops, the flap opens. How do I know? I was there back in the day. I worked at Chevy. I still have the parts books from the parts department I worked in (in storage 3 states away). I bought a new one on my birthday spring of '71. The solenoid broke in mere months because it was energized at all times when the key was on. They all broke and were removed and forgotten early on because it looks better with the flap open. Also, big block SS with air was a thing, but it had to be a Turbo 400, not available with manual. Same for the manual z28, no air. I had one of those, too.

The guy in the Chevelle said he wouldn't leave till the Camaro hit 2nd gear. When he left, you could tell the Chevelle was going to catch him, and beat him in the 1/4 mile. Which he did. That was one of the fastest cars I ever saw.

In 1970, my uncle came by my parents home with a 454 Chevelle in a metallic blue-grey colour. I was six at time, but I remember it as "the car where the back end kept wanting to pass the front end." I know it was a 454 because there was a raised metal 454 logo on the dash in front of the passenger seat that I ran my finger along repeatedly, In my memory, it was a notch-back, but since they didn't make notch-nack Chevelles in 1970 or put 454s into the earlier cars, I'll put that down to the Mandella Effect. He stayed with us for a bit over a week, just long enough for me to fall in love with that car. Today I have a 1:18 scale die-cast model of a 1970 LS6 in approximately the same colour which my wife bought me as a pre-emptive measure, and I have promised never to have more 1:1 scale cars than I can drive in a week.

A lot of the time when you meet a woman and they’re trying to get close to you they pretend to be more like you than they really are a lot of this is just window dressing and acting trust me it’ll all come out once I’ve been in a relationship for five years.

The 1970 SS LS5 (360 hp) with ZL2 option package (hood pins, cowl induction, racing stripes). The LS6 shares the same block as the LS5, being 427 c.i. stroked to 454 c.i. with a compression ratio of 11:25:1. A total of 4298 LS5 equipped Chevelles were produced in '70; 91 of them being convertible. The 454 LS6 also had the upgraded 800 Holley carb as opposed to the LS5's Rochester Quadrajet from factory.

Hello Tyler! Can you please bring back the Hoovies Garage diamond logo t-shirts, I've wanted to buy one for a long time now but they are sold out. I've been enjoying your content almost since the start and i found you thru my interest in old Merc's. Keep on posting great content, I'll stay here for as long as you post videos.

I took my driving test at the age of 16 in my mother’s 1969 Chevelle Malibu. It had the basic 350 engine, but the carburetor was badly in need of a rebuild. The car almost stalled while I was making a left turn, but I kept it going by keeping my left foot on the brake and hitting the gas with my right. When I let off the brake the car lurched forward, and I made the turn without stalling. But I got marked off for ‘lack of smoothness’ or some such thing. But there was a happy ending. The minimum passing score for the driving test was 70 and my score was a 71. I got my license, and I’ve kept it for the last 51 years.

Oh man, back in highschool a friends dad owned this in yellow and black stripes. He gave it to my friend and let us take it out, we had taken it to the city one night and it was just a day... Even pulled over and the cop let us go. Something about that experience , always makes me appreciate muscle cars from that era.

My fist car was a 70 chevelle. Red buckets. Pulled the 300 hp put in a built 396. 2 months later totaled it out while still in my teens. Sad day.

I owned a 1970 GM A-body for 31 years. They are simply right, in a whole lot of ways. Easy to drive, easy to fix, easy to modify, and uncomplicated. Solid engineering as well, and durable. At least mine had very high build quality from Flint. A 68 to 72 GM A-body is extremely popular for a reason. Not to mention GM Design was hitting it out of the ballpark with physical appeal.
