@@Ficon looked not like a lack of speed but more like a want not to crash. He had to back down multiple times as the guy in the lime green car moved to block (a tactic that works until the other driver doesn't back off, kind of douchy for an exhibition race with these classics)

@@perkristoffersson4153 Pretty evenly matched on the straights but yeah, I agree, he was being pretty ginger under braking, as one should be considering what a GTO costs. I'm surprised the racing is as close and aggressive as it is anyway.

The most impressive aspect of this for me is Damon's speed while treating the car and engine quite gently. He gave other cars room, used remarkably smooth brake and steering inputs, changed gear slowly (not banging them in) and stayed well below the rev limit. He also used higher gears than he might have otherwise done, all giving the car a bit of sympathy. Going that fast while caring for the car like that shows skill, experience and a well-controlled ego.

@@jcgabriel1569 yes indeed ! But it shouldn't be a goodwood bashing because it is the same story everywhere. Le Mans classic was very disappointing this year, the mille miglia as well. It seems you only get to see the nice cars on private trackdays or hill climbs these days.

It didn't seem that fast in a straight line (that Cobra blew past him with ease ) but it was quick through the corners , and just sounded fantastic .

3 litre engine vs a 4.7 litre. Not much can stay with the Cobras in a straight line.

@@Thou1 True very true . There's a little TVR and some of the e-types can hold them . but that's about it

The Cobra is the same one to the ft of the GTO on the grid, which stalled at the start. It is an ex-Roy Salvadori Cobra, driven by its owner Grahame Bryant, who would later hand it over to Sir Jack Brabham. Sadly, Brabham won't have a go at it, really. A rear wheel came off as he left the pits after their driver change... Damon Hill shared the GTO with Nick Mason, the owner of the car. Damon would end up at the gravel trap at Lavant corner after he downshifted from 4th to 1st by accident. I think, the pale green GTO did finish, that was driven first by Stirling Moss, and he later handed it over to Tony Dron.

@@Thou1 the lead of the race is contested between a lightweight E Type, a Shelby Cobra Daytona (driven by Phil Hill and his son Derek) a Ferrari 330 LMB (driven by Derek Bell and Peter Hardman), and there's Jochen Mass who is absolutely flying in a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray!

@@jcgabriel1569 Mostly big capacity stuff then :) Aside from the E-type, but we all know how well the XK engine can be tuned ;) Ferrari 330 of similar capacity but making up for it by virtue of a shorter stroke and more revs.

Excellent! the need to be cautious around #7 let the pack ahead get away a bit. Quite savvy to take advantage of the Cobra coming through to finally get by.

Really happy for Damon. You can’t go back in time, so getting the opportunity to flog a priceless race car later in life probably means more per-minute than anything driven prior. Maybe.
