It may be the best splitter for your application, but not sure it would work so well for a lot of folks. You are shelling out $2900 minimum configured as you tested it. The cycle times with anything under a 4 series JD tractor would be abyssmal. Also, most smaller tractors don't come standard with rear hydraulic couplers. Another thing to consider is tractor wear over time with a 3-point splitter- you have to leave your tractor running the entire time you are using the splitter, possibly at high rpm to keep your hydraulic flow rate up. I''d much rather run a small motor to run just the pump rather than run my tractor. After doing research earlier this year I ended up buying a USA made splitter with a Honda motor. I can tow it behind my tractor, but I shut the tractor off while splitting, or just drop the splitter off at the splitting location and store my tractor. Works better for me. Thanks for the video, appreciate your content.

Hey John, this is one model out of many. Not sure if you realized that. They've got a full lineup big to small. Had a guy reach out to me recently that only used his Kubota to run a generator in the field. 25,000+ hours on it. You're paying for power whether it's on the tractor or separately. Easy time on the tractor's engine too. I can make a case either way.
@tlackov
@tlackov 2 жыл бұрын
All great points - and to add one more, most smaller tractors do not have the continuous flow valve as this bigger machine - this will increase the temp of the flow valve and lead to further tractor wear. This may be a good option with the right tractor but it will not be for most of us. Love the idea of maintaining one less engine but practically maintaining a Honda sounds like a better options. What brand splitter did you end up getting?

I got a Split-Fire stand-alone two years ago and it has been a great machine. The company is great to deal with, even sent me a can of paint to touch up shipping scratches. On the log lift I zip-tied the lines together and out of the way in case large chunks fell off the table. Nice to deal with a Canadian company here in Canada.

I have this exact same splitter with the folding stand legs. Have been using it for 3 years and it has worked great. Was on a JD 4720 and now on a JD 4066M HD and both tractors handled it well. Cycle time on that is slightly slower but even on my smaller tractor this will keep 2 people as busy as they can handle. Glad to see someone review this a bit more, would have given me more confidence when I bought it but very solid product.

Other than that I really like it that’s a minor fix. I'm confused about the hydraulic valve you used on your M4. M4's come standard with one SCD (Self Canceling Detent) rear remote valve. You can add a second rear remote valve with your choice of either a SCD valve or FD (Float Detent) valve. I assumed the FD style valve worked like a FEL boom circuit valve with a float position. However, it appears that the FD valve works like a power beyond circuit (always on) when you pushed its lever all the way forward. Or, does your M4 have the "Flow Control Valve" option, which I thought was equivalent to a "power beyond" option on other tractors?
@randalls5210
@randalls5210 2 жыл бұрын
As long as the splitter has an open center valve on it The SCD valve works just fine because your not dead heading the cylinder to pop it out of the self cancelling mode. The FD valve , Float position won't work on the M4 to run the splitter because there is no hydraulic pressure flow in the float position

I had considered a hydraulic 3 point splitter. My New Holland Workmaster 35 has 8.something GPM out the back. I read up on it and realized it would just be too slow (at least for me). With wood splitting season approaching here in OH, I'm really curious to see how the Splitfire works on your machine. Also, I did research later and saw that they have a pump that goes on the PTO that ups the flow to over 20 GPM. It would be cool to see that in action if you had access to that.

Split Fire (great name) can be bought in Australia. However they are very expensive, close to $5k. I’m sure they are excellent machines but I think I’ll buy a Chinese splitter for $1000 and have a log lifter fabricated for it. It’s winter in Australia and it’s been cold too, for Australian standards. So it’s the season to be splitting wood. We have plenty of split timber to keep going till it gets warmer. So I might leave it till summer. Maybe log splitters will be cheaper in summer.

You know this is a good lookin wood splitter but… The problem is you have to use your diesel tractor. Anything over 40 horse will go through a regin while you’re splitting wood unless you rev the engine up to 2600 rpm while you’re splitting wood which burns a lot of fuel. Can’t idle these new tractors so to unload hay using PTO escalator or split wood with tractor it’s seems you either run hi rpms or go through a regin cycle while splitting.
