I love this recipe. I have made it several times for family and co workers. It’s absolutely fantastic. I use 240ml light corn syrup and 120ml of real maple syrup and add 1/2tsp of cinnamon to the nuts.

Love the way u explain a lot of stuff - made your pumpkin muffins last week , OMG they were incredible and the best cream cheese icing ever ! I will be making this very soon , who doesn’t love pecan pie ❤️

I found the little trick with the paper liner very clever but make sure the paper is all the way up the sides of the pan and a little over. Otherwise the pecan filling may leak over it and seep into your crust and make it soggy. Also when shaping your shortbread dough into the pan make a lip up the sides of the pan enough to contain the wet ingredients and again protect the filling from leaking into the crust below it. The flavour and texture is spot on. I used maple syrup but chopped my pecans too fine. One chop across and back would have been perfect. These will be a go to recipe for me. I wonder how many calories are in these? Yikes. lol

My guess is that that’s why you bake the shortbread crust first - so that the filling doesn’t seep through it and make it soggy.

I usually usually bake the pies for our family Thanksgiving dinners but it was canceled this year due to two from our group having made travel plans. The baking urge was too strong, though, so I made these pecan pie bars to share instead of pies. (Pecan pie is one of my brother's favorites.) What a wonderful treat, they turned out great! John, you are now on my very short list of favorite KZbin cooking channels. Love your recipes and your videos.

These are so delicious! I made them for my husband's office party and they were gone in no time! If you love pecan pie like I do, make them! They are a perfect item to bring to holiday gatherings, too. No need to worry about cutting and serving a pie. These will be ready to go, cut into the perfect serving sizes!

I just made these bars following the recipe, except as soon as I took the shortbread out of the oven after the initial bake, I put dark chocolate chips (about 1/2 cup or so) and melted and spread them around the shortbread-then added the filling… it’s in the oven now! Can’t wait to eat them 😋

I have made this recipe twice and they turned out amazing.The hardest part for me was cutting the parchment🤣. The shortbread base is much easier than pie crust and you can make 15 to 20 servings depending how you cut the slab. It is a great party/ gift dessert . Excellent recipe

I just made these today....and OMG they r so goooood. I did change some ingredients. First I substituted dark maple bourbon barrel syrup for the dark corn syrup. And second I make my own brown sugar. So I can make it as dark or light as I want. Never the less this is an easy recipe to follow and it is even better than the brookie recipe that I love so much. Thank you so much for great recipes

John, these look so delicious that I'm going to bake a batch for Thanksgiving instead of baking my usual pecan pie. I really appreciate all the tips you include in your presntation like snipping the corners of the parchment paper to make it fit perfectly in the backing pan and using a fork to smooth out the shortbread dough before baking. You're a great teacher and a pleasure to watch. Thank you!

I was curious if you had any troubleshooting tips for preventing the filling from getting underneath the crust? I followed the video and blog to the letter though did feel that the shortbread dough made a slightly thinner layer than I was expecting but I was careful to spread the layer to the edges of the pan. Not sure if that was the culprit? Definitely want to perfect these as they were delicious and a huge hit with my family. :)

The first time I made this, I put the filling on the shortbread right out of the oven and it did seep down the sides and underneath a little. The second time, I let the shortbread cool for about 10 minutes before I topped with filling and baked. Filling did seep down the sides a bit but not underneath so I was able to trim the edges after chilling.

@@neiljesus7131Ahh got it, glad I'm not alone haha. I chilled mine in the fridge for a bit after it came out of the oven and while I was making the filling. I'm wondering if my pan was maybe slightly too large for the quantity of dough (even though it was a 9x13 pan) and I didn't push up the edges enough or something. I'll have to keep experimenting. :)

Being a Canadian, I love butter tarts. Unfortunately I can no longer make pastry so I make butter tart bars. There's one ingredient that we put in to cut the sweetness that rarely anyone else does - vinegar. The rest of the ingredients are the same as your recipe here. My daughter doesn't like the raisins that go into traditional butter tarts, so I make a batch of pecan for her. Other than the vinegar, our recipes are the same.

They came out SOOOOOO GOOOOOD. Cut the recipe to half, used a 8X8 dish. I usually make pumpkin pie for thanksgiving. So it was a very nice change, the sweetness is well balanced (I did use Maple syrup). Perfect Pecan bars for the Holidays. Happy Thanksgiving all.

I've been known as the pie maker in the family for many years and my pecan pie especially is known as heart attack in a pan. This looks like a fun alternative, easier for grand kids to grab and go with. Almost identical to my regular recipe, always made a shortbread crust and used dark Karo syrup. Love this recipe howeverrrrr as a Scottish mama I have to say traditional shortbread doesn’t have powdered sugar in it. If anyone would like to try my recipe you’ll find it below! 225g unsalted butter 125g caster sugar 1tsp salt 340g plain flour 170c for 25 minutes or 15-18 minutes when cut into biscuits (cookies) you should always bake shortbread COLD when you’ve made the dough add it to the fridge for 30 minutes to prevent butter melting/caramelising xxx

If my man John, or any viewers, can answer this question, I would be most appreciative... I'd like to make these bars with the addition of bourbon. If I add, let's say, a quarter cup of reduced bourbon, I would assume I need to add a bit more flour to help it set, but how much? Or if there are other suggestions so my filling isn't too runny... TIA

Disappointed in the crust. Low in flavor. Pecan filling was nice & gooey but also not flavorful enough. Low in sweetness. I’m going to have to save them by drizzling melted chocolate over top of the bars. Expensive mistake. If you like bland pecan pies…very low sweetness…this is for you.

used honey for filling tasted great, but some filling oozed under the bottom of crust during baking. Maybe haden't packed the crust well enough or could have rolled it out. Just a bit messy but licking fingers was great taste. Will try it again!

Just wanted to say two things, I ran across a bad egg. Might be a good idea to crack your eggs into a separate bowl and then add them in, less waste that way. 2nd, what if you tossed in some raisins? Sultana work great but you should blanch them first. Jacky from Montreal.

If you toast your pecans, don’t wander off. When you first smell the scent of the toasting pecans, jerk them out of the oven immediately others they’ll burn for spite.

also :( is it okay if i toast the pecans after chopping? wouldn't more surface area increase the toasty awesome nutty flavor of the nuts? it seems like if we're going through the effort of toasting them (lol ;)) it would make sense to maximize the effect of those actions. please keep in mind i am wrong in this suggestion.

I made a batch of these yesterday. So good. However, when I sliced them today, on one end, the filling leaked out under the shortbread. Any idea why this happened?

What did I do wrong!?!? My pecan batter ran through the short bread and made it soggy 🙁

Did you bake the shortbread before adding the filling? Other than that it would be ingredients used. Did you sub the flour or butter for an alternative? I'm making this right now... so far so good!

I had the same experience. I followed his video/instructions and the bars baked around the edge, but the middle was soupy. I did bake the shortbread ahead as instructed. I did use 1/2 Karo dark corn syrup and 1/2 real maple syrup. Any ideas of what else could have happened?

What would the cook time be if you didnt have any pecans in the pan? One thing is i love pecan pie with no pecans 😂. So making this would be perfect for me.

John, I tried making this today and for some reason I can't figure why it isn't setting up.. I double checked the recipe and watched your video again.I let it cool on the counter for an hour and even put in freezer 3 hours. Everything looked the same as in your video but when I go to cut it liquid juices are still flowing out of the middle. Any ideas? ---Stalled in Thanksgiving Preparation.

I could use some help. I tried making these but it stuck to the parchment paper and I had to end up throwing most of it away. Any ideas would be helpful.
