Could not agree more. One of the things that killed Glass was the "fear of being filmed" - which nowadays seems somewhat quaint... I've got a Quest 3 and XReal Air, and they are for totally different purposes, Immersive VR or a monitor in front of your eyes. When that monitor becomes as useful as your phone in and of itself, woohoo!

Totally agree with you. I feel like this is an area where Microsoft quit too early as well with Windows Mixed Reality.

Hi Shane. I bought Google Glass about 11 years ago and used them for several years. The best use was by Virgin Atlantic Flight attendants so that when we boarded the plane they knew who we were instantly . Very cool. Understood the privacy angle but they could have been productivity tools. Still got a pair but they do not do anything other than showing me the camera view into my eyes I now have Rayban Metas and Xreal but none can give me Google Maps and the navigation glass did

The original Google Glasses were great. Vision Pro is not something I would buy/use. Glasses yes. Goggles no.

As you know, Shane, I’ve been saying this for years. Completely agree. Bring the concept back!

I was very involved back then, and this is what we were all saying. It's way too early for something like G glass. We were just excited that XR as a whole was happening. We were all there and ecstatic about it.

Good take. Bigger issue will be whether it is a good thing for us to have another (technological and proprietary) layer between ourselves and the world (and people) around us. Obviously it will be optional, but perhaps eventually only in the same way that having a smart phone is optional.

I came to the same conclusion as you: a replacement for a watch, but with ar. And also the processing is done on the phone to save glasses battery life.

The timing was so unfortunate. I remember being really hyped about Google Glass at the time, but of course, being a student then, I couldn't even dream of buying a $1500 piece of tech. In the years since then, we have not only received more efficient SoCs and batteries but also the introduction of 5G, eSIM and ALLMs. A 2024/5 version would be amazing both as an accessory to the phone and even standalone for basic tasks. Given the tech demos we saw, I'm glad they are still working on something, and I really hope the recent announcements will lead to an actual product release next year.

I think Apple vision pro was a compromise. They wanted to make glasses, but their technology wasn't there yet. I think the reason the apple watch got a tapping gesture was to control their future glasses. I think the reason vision pro has a cable is because eventually the glasses will plug into the iPhone. Makes too much sense.

I remember when this was announced and it's a good idea to look back at this. I wonder if Google might take another crack at this?

"Tip of the iceberg" is the point, but not just for Tech Heads. Think what this will mean for vision and hearing impaired folks. Imagine being hearing impaired and seeing captions/transcriptions of a conversation right in front of your eyes. Or being vision impaired and heading about the environment around you -- "You are two feet from a curb", etc. That is what is exciting to me about AR and what Google will come up with! Thanks as always for your posts.

Im a fan of both VR and XR headsets. I use my AVP as an "episodic use" device, and with the ultra-wide display, I have used it to work by connecting it to my Mac. I have worn it for as long as four hours w/ an added head strap w/ no issues. I also have an "all day" device: Rokid Smart glasses that I could use for longer commutes and walking around w/ a line of sight around me that I can control through the settings. Both devices have a purpose, but they are different. It's similar to having both a PC and a tablet /laptop or a tablet and a folding phone: These devices don't have to replace each other. They can coexist.

Good feedback and I agree on the coexisting part. I guess what I'm saying is that I think there's a bigger market for a pair of glasses that augment your phone through a hybridization of the smart watch and phone vs something like the Quest or AVP. They are doing fundamentally different things and aren't directly competing to me.

Agree 💯 Shane. The glasses should be the focus in my humble opinion vs VR headset in terms of everyday usefulness. I can also see the other side using VR first and then trying to shrink it down. However, we all know that will take years upon years. I was stoked when they came out with the original Google Glass but I agree like you that it was ahead of its time. I anticipate AI, specifically Gemini, will be utilized to usher in this new technology in a fraction of that time. I guess we'll just have to wait and see... I would definitely be an early adopter of Gemini AR Glasses.

VR will only takeoff if by some miracle it's as thin as a normal glasses and has the same functionality and UI as apple vision and ads work like in blade runner and minority report but that probably won't happen for the next 50 years
@kylehughes161913 күн бұрын
Yeah dude absolutely. Or put another way VR is not going to take off until it makes more sense for the average consumer. Even if it was equally priced right now it doesn't make more sense. Price is going to have to come way down and functionality is going to have to go way up

But Vision Pro was never meant to sell "particularly well" compared to other devices. Sources like Daring Fireball indicate that Apple sold pretty much exactly as many units as they ever meant to, and will continue to do so, just like all their other products. All that said, you're right about the less cumbersome, less expensive device (Glass) being more accessible and attractive to more users.
@shanecraigtech24 күн бұрын
I think it's safe to assume they expected a fairly low volume. The biggest thing I'd point out to in terms of the thing being disappointing isn't necessarily numbers, but perception. It felt like there was a good amount of hype, but it became clear that it was pretty much all being generated by content creators who thought it would be a big deal and a good way to cash in and it just wasn't. The views fell off *fast* and people broadly just didn't care. It's possible that at a much reduced price that could change. Time will tell. I still think it's the wrong format for mass use, regardless of price.

@@shanecraigtech I think you might not be seeing the bigger picture. As an individual device to do work, watch movies and social media it is unbelievable. If you need to be sociable while using the device, not so good. To watch KZbin, TikTok etc by yourself, wonderful. To do work using Apple Mac’s fabulous. Just my opinion. Darrell .

Sorry to be rude, but I'm not interested by all these things. I wear glasses since my 12 years old. I'm short-sighted as a mole so I need my glasses everytime. But as I'm aging, I tend to remove it to see close, for reading for example. Why the hell companies are working on connected glasses and still not on autofocusing glasses? I just want dynamic glasses which focus and adjust on what I'm looking at.
