• Google Nest WiFi Route...
In this video we setup the Google Nest WiFi router, plus I add a second "router" as a mesh point and attempt to use a wired backhaul rather than the standard wireless point system. This can only be done using multiple "Nest Routers" and cannot be done using the "Nest Points" that are secondary to routers and do not have wired capabilities.
Also, for the best results, follow the filling instructions for Wired Backhaul.
1. Setup initial primary router
2. Start setup of second router next to primary router wirelessly first.
3. Once setup is complete, take the second router to your desired location and plug in LAN connection and power up.
4. Once on, go into Home app and run a connection test.
5. Enjoy awesome WiFi!
Enjoy the video, and stay tuned for the full review.

If the google Home app says your connection is "good" then it's NOT using the wired backhaul. I have a 5-node mesh in our home, all with wired backhaul, and the Google Home app reports the connections as "great". I'd really check this on your end. With what's shown in the video, the wired backhaul doesn't appear to be operational.

Did you put a switch between your Nest Pro Router and your second Nest Pro Router? I need a total of four Nest Pro's in my home to have adequate coverage, the first one will sit next to my T-Mobile Gateway and from there I have home runs of cat6E to three locations spread out in my home. The Nest Pro only has one port - thus, can I utilize a switch?

I sure as the hell would not consider Nest Wi-Fi as ethernet backhaul .. especially since the only way to Jerry-rig it together is to use two or more full routers, and not as they are packaged to be sold. Instead the way they're sold "Nest Wifi router and 1 or 2 points" which absolutely does not support ethernet backhaul .. only Wi-Fi backhaul is supported. Also some companies only allow one AP to be used as ethernet backhaul AP mesh. So you've got to read the fine print. Instead I would recommend something like Linksys Velop, others or more to my liking products from UniFi.

I got an Ethernet cable to connect my mesh points up. I have 2 eero Pro 6 units but have been having issues with them. Anyway I tested them with Ethernet backhaul and they run very good, so I plugged in my old original Google WiFi pucks using Ethernet backhaul and got consistently better pings then in the Eero's! I am seriously thinking of going back to Google WiFi permanently now. They perform brilliantly for me.

Backhaul doesnt seem to work, and worse, wired traffic on same switch will go over the wifi mesh, not wired. I have my nest router with a switch downstream, i have multiple computers off that switch, and another nest router in mesh mode. When pinging the gateway IP, i get fluctating ping times usually like 5ms to 30ms, once i disconnect the mesh router acting as a point, my pings drop for a few seconds, then come back at 1ms or less. Even though the wired computers have a physical link to the main nest router, it is actually having all traffic go over the wifi mesh instead.
@christopherweeks842

so... got it to work, i had a netgear routers just bridge with wifi shut off as the first switch, then a second switch off that for my wired office devices and the Mesh router setup as a point. Was googling more and saw someone mention Spanning Tree, didnt find any option in the netgear about it, normally something more on managed and enterprise switches, but i decided to just use a 3rd switch i had in its place, and it worked. Pings off the my wired computer are now 1ms or less, if i disconnected the link to the main switch, my ping times do jump up to 5 to 30ms again, then when i plug the link back in, it takes that route and goes back to 1ms. So, looks like it does work now, and was just that netgear doing some loop blocking most likely.

Dumb question: How is it possible to know that a Mesh network was created between those 2 bases and not 2 ordinary Wi-Fi networks.
@TrexKN
@TrexKN 3 жыл бұрын
Basically, if it were two networks, your devices would see them as two networks, even if they had the same name. So your device would remain connected to the weaker signal, unless it completely disconnected. This means your signal would either be poor or have to be manually switched. This would also mean moments without connection, when it switched. A mesh network should be seamless in comparison.

I have three with wired backhaul. Modem -> Primary Router -> switch -> then to each secondary router from the switch. You need to set it up wirelessly first with secondaries in close proximity to primary. Then relocate secondaries to perm location with wired (Ethernet) connection and then restart everything. I found it will not recognize the wire connection to the secondary routers until you must run a mesh test again.

Thanks for the video, I confirmed this setup still works last night. A few additions that might help others: - I set up the second nest wifi router completely wirelessly (without wired ethernet back haul) to start - Confirmed a few devices were properly connecting to the new router when it was very close by, ran some speed tests, etc (toggling wifi on the devices helps it find the new router) - Then I unplugged the new router, attached the ethernet cable to the WAN (globe logo), plugged back in power) - Confirmed things again, ran more speed tests, ping decreased by about 5ms for me (debatable whether or not it's worth the trouble to wire in my case lol) - You can confirm your new router is properly configured as wired by opening Google Home app -> wifi -> wifi devices -> tap the new one you just installed -> tap wheel icon top right -> mid way down under wi-fi information it should show "Connection type: Wired" if all is setup properly (otherwise it will show "Connection type: Mesh") Good luck

I am trying to understand backhaul. Does this mean when you move it across the house you're just connecting to Ethernet from the wall? Or do you have to have a very extended cord running through the house? Sorry if this is super basic
@GeekSmart
@GeekSmart 4 жыл бұрын
Backhaul is the connection between 2 mesh points. This can be wireless (most people use this as it is easier) or wired. Wired can be exposed or in wall wiring. If your home was wired with ethernet, you can just plug one end of the cable into each mesh point to wire them together.

@cap706
@cap706 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shadarif1901 basically, he is saying that any home wired with ethernet will have a switch that those ethernet cables terminate to. You plug your modem directly into 1st nest router's internet WAN port (has a world symbol), then run a 2nd ethernet cable from the other port into the port on the switch that leads to the room where you would like to place the 2nd router. Take the 2nd router to that room and plug into the ethernet port on the wall. Run your setup thru the app & you're all set

@@cap706 I'm assuming small homes have just one switch that all the ethernet ports lead back to. Im assuming it's not just good enough for them all to lead to the same switch? The way it's explained makes it sound as if being hooked up to the same switch isn't what it means.
@cap706
@cap706 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowFyre6 Yes, in a home environment, all you should ever need is one switch. But, if your switch doesn't have enough ports for all your ethernet cables, you can get one that does or you can add an additional switch. for example, I have a Google nest wifi system with one port that runs to a 24 port switch. My home has ethernet ports running to each of 5 bedrooms, 4 to the office, 2 to gym, 2 to the bar, & 4 in the theater, a camera system & 5 nest wifi devices to cover whole home all on 1 switch. I have a friend who has an 8 port switch near his modem running to 4 port switches in multiple rooms in his home and has only 1 wireless router. So there are many possibilities.

The points can’t connect over Ethernet, so when you put a second router far away from the original Ethernet will handle the distance better than WiFi.
