I switched from Windows Live Mail and I'm not going back. Gmail is not only easier to use, but safer when it comes to interacting with mail and spam (btw, no spam in gmail). Also, gmail is more useful features than Live. I love it

One of the basic concepts you learn about in marketing is "clutter", which is everything that gets in the way of your message. This is a good video because it cuts through the clutter. Also, if you're concerned about gmail (or anyone else) scanning your e-mail remember: it's done by a machine that doesn't care about your viagra scrip. I'm sure if it were a matter national security you'd have the good sense not to have it sent to your gmail account. So there.

DiegoHCantor, if you've attached a file, wait a little bit (may take up to 120 seconds or so, depending on the file size) and see if a little check mark appears next to the file name. Try unchecking it.

contacts -> Show in Quick Contacts? Always?... Archives -> All mail? (the address book saves every mail address you send at least one mail. so, you have to press all contacts to see them all. gmail automagically manages a frequently mailed list, but both of this list can be altered by editing the Show in Quick Contacts? button...

It was 12:40PM and my class was about to start at 1:00, as my project was saved in my gmail account, I quickly tried to access my account. However, it didnt show anything but a blank page, I had tried atleast 20 times - but still nothing. Professor wouldn't accept any late papers, so I failed the project. Thanks GMAIL, You're the best!

What they mean is that it's automatically sorted into a 'spam' folder and not in your inbox, where it could easily be mistaken as a regular email.

The problem is they use masking. Gmail seems to use address recognition, headers analysis and most of all - message analysis. Elaborate spammers use all kinds of confusion in each of these three areas.

been using Gmail since it came out. Works great and love all the new features that come with it. Its really convenient and love the free POP access if you need it. Searching through old email is really simple. I hardly delete any email. I have 2355 read emails in my inbox and 806 in spam. I only use Gchat to chat with friends now. However there are not many people who chat through email that I know of.

I was thrilled to hear the actress in "reason 2" correctly pronounce "Phew!" (not really a word - it's a sound). On so many famous American sitcoms the actors mispronounce the word by speaking it literally. Sorry to hear the "engineer" mispronounce it. Wondering why the scriptwriter would use it twice in the one presentation.

Use a second browser like Firefox and IE. You can also get a Firefox extension that checks multiple Gmail accounts.

There aren't folders. There are, however, Labels. Where you used to have a folder called, say, "Family," now you create a Label called "Family" and just apply that label to any relevant e-mail as they come in (or you can have a filter apply it automatically), just like you would have used to use folders. If you want to just see "Family" e-mails, just click the "Family" label on the left. Works the same as Folders.

To sign up for Gmail by yourself, you need to tell Google your cell phone number and be able to send and receive text messages. It's a safety measure to prevent spam bots from joining. But, it's easier to just invite somebody. That's why the invite counter is still there.

Try to join Google Labs in your GMail settings. there are colored labels nows... but they're still testing them, so you would have to use Google Labs - features that are not totally ready yet... Give them a second chance!! They're getting better and better and they've showed that they respect their users...

it blocks NON spam too!! It blocks emails from my friends that come from UNIVERSITY addresses. Another friend of mine also has had this happen to her with a different University. Not only does it block it, it doesn't even show up in the SPAM folder. I will sit side by side with my friend of said University while she sends me an e-mail, and it never shows up in GMail, but it will show up in Hotmail and Yahoo and and and..

Agreed, it's good. However, I did receive I bleive 3 or 4 total spam mails since the incarnation of gmail. The conversation grouping is great but confusing if you're used to using other email accounts or MS Outlook. It's still easy to get used to it. I've abandoned hotmail about 3 lifetimes ago.

Gmail IS wonderful. i've converted one of the places i work to using it. My friends use Google Calendar, now, too. i do NOT get spam in my inbox. Ever! The grouping feature is particularly nice because I deal with livejournal and youtube comments a lot and they don't junk up the place by being scattered into different emails.

Also consider that spammers frequently try to guess which accounts are active by mass-mailing all common words and phrases on a popular mail service. Gmail is no exception.

For me, the conversations are my favorite part of Gmail. I don't really use the chat because I prefer Safari over the more-able Firefox, and Safari doesn't support it. i don't think they actually "read" your gmail; i'm pretty sure spam detection is done relatively easily by filtering emails that have those random and obscure domain names, which are typical of spam.

I wish there was some way of turning off the spam filter. It quite often catches mails that aren't spam at all, and even though I tell it "not spam", it will still mark the next almost identical message as spam, next time it arrives. Grrr. And the customer support is non-existant. Still the best free service out there though, so can't really complain.

I'm currently maintaining 1 Yahoo Mail account + 2 Gmail accounts. And I love my Gmail IMAP set-up into my Mac's Apple Mail application. =) And its good for the iPhone and iPod Touch! =) Tried it myself!

The spam filter CAN be better. I get like 5 spam emails every day and there is no way to get rid of them. They clog up my trash. There should be an option to make them disappear completely, as well as an option that enables me to filter messages so that they arrive in the inbox (that accidentally end up in the trash), just different filters for getting rid of spam.

As andniciu has said, Gmail has folders... they just call them labels. Which is Google's knock-off way of referring to a tag. Regardless, functionally it's exactly the same as a folder. As for filters, RukiaRod is right and there are filters in Gmail.

It's encrypted by default... go figure, set up a email client (such as Thunderbird or Outlook), Gmail requires the client to have TLS support (a type of encryption)

Well... first of all, read the small text on the right hand side under the Gmail logo. Second - use backups for important projects. I always put projects online or in a mailbox AND on USB flash disk too. It's plain safety.

i was forced to use gmail when my msn was temporarily closed due to spam, now i think is thebest thing that could ever happened to me, i make free calls, send sms, vinculate my acconts on facebook, gmail and others and the system learns what is important for me. i just wish this would have happened loong ago.

This is not a big deal if you access gmail from any POP-based client. Your client will show you the size of the emails and you can sort them by size if you like.. You don't have to access gmail from the web nor suffer from any web-based UI flaws.

For any spam that does get through, make sure you mark it as spam. Otherwise how will gmail learn? There's a "report spam" button at the top and bottom of every message.

Actually, I think that decision was a wise one, considering all the gormless folks out there who will execute any attachment that happens to land in their inbox. For the clueful, it isn't all that difficult to package an executable in an archive format like RAR, 7-zip, etc. in order to bypass the restriction mechanism. OTOH, it would be nice if they had an automated online virus scanning engine like Yahoo has to provide some base level of protection (i.e. ClamAV).
