This video is the best for explaining Google Drive. Even though it is very outdated, it helps to clarify that instead of attaching a doc to an e-mail, you can attach an e-mail to a doc. I use this in all of my Google Drive training. It would be nice to have an updated version.

Hey Lee, I'm a teacher here in Palo Alto and on behalf of the 9th grade students at Castilleja School, we want to say, "Google Docs Rocks!" We just showed the video to our 9th graders in our introduction to our school's google apps for education network. These particular students are using google docs to collaborate on a history presentation. Cheers! Matt Montagne Palo Alto, CA

This thing's a lifesaver. I usually work in groups of 4 students, and we have tight-knit deadlines for our papers. Usually the same day. Within 1 minute we can all be in the same document, and help each other on the fly with stuff we don't understand. Fun thing, we usually beat the deadline by one and a half hour because of the collaboration. That's 1.5 hours of sending each other documents and moving over to help each others down the drain!

I wrote the paper on Google Docs, forget to submit it to the required plagiarism check website, was reminded at 8:23 am. During class I opened Google Docs right on my phone and submitted it by 8:28 am straight from class. AWESOME, LOVE IT.

Google Docs has many uses not only sharing with users, but it also has a built in spell checker with grammar support, autosave and revision of every editing that we do. Google Docs is a great tool for helping bloggers thoughfully, it can also connect the gap between the writer and the editor, no need to exchange emails and lose track of necessary changes. This video is very helpful.

drive is the cloud storage service by google. It is like your pendrive or external HDD, to store all random stuff. Docs refers to the 3 apps that help you work, which is saved in DRIVE. it would be complex if you had to access files in two different locations. So google has simplified it by integrating Docs in Drive.

The support of .xlsx is also important because it is one of the extension which is open to use worldwide. You are right that there are less users of xlsx but if Google wants to give thing in easier way then it is necessary to give give support to all extensions like xlsx, docx, pptx etc.

Compared with email attachments, which are sent by nearly everyone as plain text which is stored in several places and is very visible in transit, the google approach is much more secure. So if you're sharing documents, the cloud is much better than email-based collaboration.

A lot of people, I think were shocked that Google would do it for free, perhaps being a lower quality in comparisons to the high priced Microsoft. Google should continue these education up beat- trainng sessions- possibly even do a little series of best in practice uses of the technology. THE NEXT thing I would like the Googolers in Googland is to put out a mind mapping system- that could be also a part of the documents package. Oh, and hey, thank you for all that you are doing for us -

I don't think so. On Dropbox (if it's still like it was when I remember it) you technically download the file, edit it, and save (technically, reupload). On GDocs, you are all on the file literally at the same time, online; I can type this and you can delete it simultaneously, and I will see your deleting, in real time. You can also chat alongside the document, or even integrate with Hangouts. It really is revolutionary.

@ajselectronichelprs say 4 people are working on a document, each with a different task. 4 copies of the same document are then made, person A joins them together and email back to person B, person C then adds another paragraph and sends to person B who makes their changes and then person D emails person A his new changes. No two people have the same document anymore, there heaps of versions floating around. With Google docs all 4 people edit and read the same one.

The *.xlsx format is relatively new. I'm sure it'll be supported in the near future. Lot's of the world hasn't migrated to *.xlsx yet, though, so it was more important to support *.xls. For now, you can save your *.xlsx as *.xls and then upload it.

It may not be ideal for top-secret files, but it sure is handy for basic stuff (notes to self, to-do lists, working on papers both at home and at school without having to deal with keeping track of CDs or memory sticks). You can access your stuff from anywhere, which makes it really convenient. Don't knock it till you've tried it! ;)

(I do not use this software or feature so this is just my general knowledge.) Usually there will be a button to save directly to a machines hardrive, the save button. If there isn't on there may be the print button, if not you're going to have to copy and paste your created document onto your computer. This may be messy and require some editing but once you're done, you're done.
