They make an after market product to solve the problem. You can buy a frame the will house the camera and Microphone adapter and it has the mount on the top for the microphone. Bought mine from amazon for about $15 usd

I've never understood why some other parts of the world an an extra syllable to the word "aluminum". They say "a-looh-mini-um". How can you get that from aluminum?

Because in other countries it's spelled with an extra "i" for minium. "Sir Humphry Davy, a British chemist, discovered this metal in 1808. He also discovered and named sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, barium, and boron; lots of “ium” usage in those names, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Davy originally gave this element the name aluminum after the mineral alumina, whose name derive from the base alum which means “bitter salt” in Latin. Completely unusable! Around 90% of the recordings do not have audio recorded. I guess the reason is the weak usb connection with the short cable and the weight of this device. @Gopro - you should take this part out of sortiment if you want to be selling only high quality products. 65€ are laying in my garage for month and I don't have the courage to sell to someone else.

Late to the party but I remember reading about another user having the same issue on the forums. I don't remember the exact fix but basically there is a certain "way" you need to use the GoPro so that it records the audio from the USB C box. MIGHT have been so that you have to turn on the camera and then hit record. Only hitting the record button would make the audio not saved.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the audio from my hero7 black for what it is. In a perfect environment it's very passable. It's the bad audio situations that have convinced me to buy an external microphone. I do agree this audio adapter is completely overpriced and ridiculous but otherwise for its form factor I am pretty blown away at the quality of my hero 7. I own multiple full frame DSLR set ups but I always hate dragging them out to do Vlog type stuff. This was the main purpose of buying my hero 7 and at the end of the day the best camera is the one you are willing to take with you

It depends on how your using it. It's prone to pick up a lot of handling noise, even more so if it's in a case. For an action camera it's ok, but it still feel they can improve audio.

My adapter does not work with any mic, just hissing sound all the time. But if you plug your mic full in then remove it half out, you can feel it. All the mics work just fine, powered & non-powered

Apology for falling in the typical fast stupid comment, after making some research it look like that Gopro 5 and 6 need the audio to be pre digitalized due to the recording format and the box do that so it need the box to work . I was thinking about canceling my today order, but is a though choice as it is still an awesome camera, I decided to keep it, but is soon to know if is a smart choice :) ..side note: seems that the usb c extra port is total useless, it cannot charge while recording audio (but I didn't test myself)

Yeah it's a pity they set it up this way. Up until the gopro 4 you could use any mic easily, but you need to use the adapter for the 5 or 6. Perhaps there is a cheap 3rd party alternative now that is designed specifically for the gopro, but there certainly wasn't any available when I bought it.

Given Apples lightening to 3.5mm adapter has a DAC built into it and it’s tiny, I’m not sure why they couldn’t make something a similar size...apart from phantom power and the usb C input. P.s. having those box lights behind you was very annoying to watch

This uses TRS, which is standard for mics. If you're using a mic designed for smartphones, it will be TRRS, so you would have to convert it.

In Brazil, this accessory is costing today R$ 500, plus the case with the socket to put this .. weird and badly designed thing, costs more R$ 200. So, for you that is not a Brazilian understand the problem, our base salary (minimum salary) is R$ 954/month. I bought a GoPro yesterday, already used by someone else, for R$ 1100, with accessories, two batteries, and a memory card. As a way to capture audio with better quality, I will need to spend almost the equivalent of another GoPro. I want to use my gopro to record POV gameplay on the computer. If I plug the audio cable from the pc into the mic adaptor it should record the audio from the PC, can you confirm this will work ? It works perfectly with my Sony AS20 useing the mic input. Thanks

It's difficult to know exactly as I'm not sure fo your setup. Which audio cable is coming from your PC? If it's an outgoing cable from an audio interface that can be recognised as a direct line in, that may work (though I haven't tested it). You will need a video capture card to record POV computer directly into your computer. The capture card can also capture audio from your GoPro.

I am having issues when plugging external mics into the GoPro, once I get it uploaded on to pc there is no sound. Doesn’t happen all the right but happens on both GoPro’s I have Any ideas?

Any time that has happened to me it's been a connection issue with the cable. Make sure it's a TRS cable going into the camera.

Kevin Muldoon thanks, I am sure it’s the connection but it seems random, some times it works and others not... will have to keep making sure it’s plugged in I would have thought if it wasn’t plugged in though the normal GoPro sound would resume but inside its silent which is odd

Ideally, you want to try another microphone and make sure that works. Again, check the cables too. It's a case or trial and error.

Bro, it happens when you use one touch record. Turn on the gopro first and then start recording. Also try updating to the latest firmware if you already haven't

The issue with this microphone adapter is not even its price.. the real issue is why is it even there - not to mention the size of it. GoPro, just build that damn thing inside the next gen GoPro just like you did in old GoPros..until then I am sticking with Chinese action cameras who Allow this incredible function encapsulated in their cameras.. for the fraction of the price.

@@sjganeshkumar That's a USB microphone. It was designed specifically for computers and wasn't meant to be connected to cameras directly. You would have to record the audio separately.

I absolutely will never buy another GoPro - I am glad they are failing as a company. This is such a bullshit thing to do. They know what their customers use the cameras for. The price is already over the top and then this surprise. For a motorcycle vlogger, you have to find room to fit this dam thing. Also to use the waterproof case with a microphone you have to drill holes in it and there for it's no longer waterproof, surely given what people use these for a little bit of design thought ...... The guy that started the company was just interested in taking massive amounts of money out of the company to buy his Jet and Boat he was not in it for the long term judging by how badly the company took it's eye off the ball. They missed the drone market compleyely. Also the obvious lack of design thought in the GoPro, it's just awful - For example, My SJCam, I can take the SD Card out or charge the battery when in it's cradle (non waterproof case for mounting on a helmet) - To charge the GoPro or take the SD card out I have take it out of the very snug case everytime. As I said I'm glad they are failing, the competition are already over taking them.

I think it's a great tool, and I'm sad they are failing as it would have been nice to to see them refine it further and improve some of the weaker aspects. But for action where size is the issue, I wouldn't use anything else and I've tried a few.

For me the solution go pro offer sucks, as stated in the video, it's big, ugly and expensive and you're still tied to the camera. I opted to buy a TASCAM. DR-05 Linear PCM Stereo Recorder, uses 2 AAA batteries and costs arround £80.00 gbp so yes maybe a little more investment but that is well worth the advantage of being of camera. I still keep the GO Pro audio switched on, so I end up with two audio recordings, making it easy to sync the Tascam recording. The big advantage is, the quality and range on the Tascam is excellent and I can also situate the Tascam close to the source of the sound output. That's a definite plus using a wide angle video at any distance from the subject and can be recording the subject while in motion. The Tascam has a standard tripod screw socket so can be mounted using various attachments via this socket or it can simply be popped into the speakers top pocket. You can leave it sitting on a table in meeting type situations and it picks up everybody. Finally having two separate audio sequences can be very useful, just take the time to get a perfect sync and move between them on the time line, fade as required. There are more expensive models but I find this model entirely satisfactory for anything I'm doing.

I have a Sony audio recorder, but the benefit of using the adapter is that it lets you record everything in one. I don't mind syncing audio in one shot, but it can be a pain in certain situations.

I guess the people at GoPRO had it all figured out with this pricey piece of "no alternative for" add on external accessory eh, they're all outrageously priced compared to after market third party cheap knock offs. I was lucky to get my GoPro Hero 6 for almost a hundred dollars off months after launch, I'm actually impressed with it's performance so far. I can live with the not so perfect audio, I guess I'll pass on buying the external microphone 3.5mm adapter because the processing chip inside is only recognized by a GoPro action cameras.

Nothing wrong with GoPro action devices to make their own peripherals & accessories exclusively for their brand of products, but when they price it outrageously high then this isn't a good business strategy because aggressive pricing will turn customers away for buying externals with no alternate choices. That's the reason GoPro is in the red loosing out to their competitions who has a choice of buying cheaper third party & after market accessories, over pricing accessories is a short sighted profit decision from GoPro rather than focusing on grabbing more market shares by selling more cameras.

Excellent review. Your exactly right. Poor design and I feel like I'm taking it up the A----- when a over pay for a bulky piece almost half the size of the camera itself. This is all marketing with no interest payed to the user. Yes if you want to use audio on your over priced camera this is the only way. One bonus is you can charge your camera while in use. I didn't know that so I'll pay pay to play .Should of bought a Sony! Thanks again.
