For me the DJI user interface is much better than GoPro, especially the front facing touch display. Especially if you are alone and doing videos where for some reason you are positioned in front of the camera. Also screw threads on the lens is nice unless of course you cross thread a filter or something like that. It seems to me that GoPro always leaves something obvious out or some important feature doesn’t work the way it should. By now these cameras should be very close to perfect in their application niche and GP just isn’t. We are lucky that there is still competition out there in the camera space. The Action3 does offer 360 horizon balance in 2.7K 16:9 and below. “Horizon Steady” it’s called. I got mine for the colors and WB… and the price, I’m cheap.

An interesting comparison, can the GoPro's WB error be corrected manually? Insta360 One RS with 4K Boost would be an alternative, at least in terms of price, but with lower frame rates. An advantage of DJI for me would be the two-year warranty, in contrast to GoPro and Insta360 with only one year.

@@tr3bOr22 i take the Hero 10 and Hero 11 in the ocean without case. I go 8 - 10meters deep. today I got hot by 4 really big waves when I was getting out. No leaks. I have the GoPro subscription that replaces the camera. But I think from the Hero 9 on GoPro improved the battery latch/ door. I always rinse with fresh water. I used to use dive cases, but they make often the image softer and I would get droplets on the front element. Of course, if you take a camera in salt water there is always a chance of losing it to a leak. I prefer the single door of the GoPro to the 2 doors of the DJI.

From what i'w seen looks like DOA3 should be set at -0.3 (or -0.7)EV and later on bump up the shadows a little bit and it would look better, right now it is little bit contrasty.

I’ve had the GoPro 11 now for about three weeks. I’ve had no problems with it but the app constantly disconnecting just like all the other GoPro’s. Certainly much better but several times this week on my boat and on the top of my car disconnect stopping me in my tracks. They still have not mastered the connection of the app. I think I’m going to keep it but I’m going to check out that one RS that you mentioned. I think when I looked into it before you need to use their software before you can put it in Premiere. That’s a dealbreaker for me. Thank you for your reviews I always count on them.

Do you have iOS or Android smartphone? I have never had any connection issues with any GoPro since I have switched to iPhone. RS can shoot normal footage out of the camera, you don't have to use Insta360 app anymore, but you will loose some options. My pleasure!

Another thing… I had always thought that you needed to use their software before you put it in Adobe Premier. Is that true? I have talked about 10-bit, all GoPro samples are 10-bit except that one that demonstrates that it doesn't matter.. No, you don't need to use any specific software.

I think you may be thinking of Insta360's 360 degree cameras which do need to be processed before editing - though there's a plugin for Premiere for that.

I am happy with the quality, considering the type of the optics that are being used. It is still two levels above the One X3. 360 cameras are far from achieving this kind of IQ in 2D.

Is it possible that the problem of lack of sharpness for OA3 is attributable to the protective front lens in gorilla glass? It would be useful to do a test by removing the protective lens to understand if the image would acquire sharpness.

No. There isn’t really any lack of sharpness as you can see by the stills sample.

The image just looks so much better on the GoPro with its DR... Many other things speak for DJI but if the most important thing isnt great, its really hard to be convinced to buy it. Like at 8:24 with the car shots, its just night and day difference. Maybe DJI can improve that once they release 10bit and more updates

I overall agree with you, but there are some issues, like the part you mentioned, the GoPro is on a sunny stretch of the road and the DJI is on a road that is shaded by trees, then gets in full sun. In some other part of the video, the DJI is in linear mode, and the GoPro is in wide / fisheye mode. I bought the Hero 11. But the DJI battery life, interface, water resistance are tempting.

@Stefano Giovannini Trees in that scene don't matter, the point is that you will get white sky as soon you point the DJI into the sun. That won't happen with GoPro, as you can see at 0:24. Standard mode on DJI and Wide on GoPro have basically the same FoV, which is why I was using those tow for this comparison.

@Stefano Giovannini A much more significant issue is that it changes the exposure to pure white. I don't use linear on GoPro at all, due to the crop, sorry about that. Wide and standard is a better match IMO, since it provides default GoPro FoV on DJI.

@@TheHybridShooter be is referring to a miscalibrated lens on the dji. a lot of dji users have found the image is VERY soft. there is not a lot of info on how many units were effected, but you can find a lot of evidence of this in the dji forum and KZbin. it is very bad for near focus. and many units have soft image even past 1 meter.

@@TheHybridShooter you would be one of the first people to be totally unaffected. almost every unit tested has been a victim to some degree. a lot of people thought the gopro was just creating a sharper image, then users started comparing to old iPhone, action 1, etc and were able to diagnose the issue. dji issued a beta firmware for users in the forum, but it just increased in camera sharpening.

The whole reporting of the "issue" is a mess, people are describing all kinds of different issues, expecting the Action 3 to have the same close focus capabilities as the OA1 despite that it has much larger sensor and so on... there is no reason to compare it to an old iPhone with completely different type of optics. The only issue that I have found is that the 30cm min. focus distance is a quite optimistic, but it was exactly the same with Action 2 and nobody has even mentioned it. I think that the whole "issue" is blown way out of proportion.

You did not mention a very big advantage of the Action 3: It has a universal USB-C standard. Meaning any USB-C microphone will work with it.

I have no intention of buying either, so perhaps I don't need to care, but it's the shot of your face on each camera that troubled me. I was surprised that you preferred the skin tone colour of the Action 3 - it looked too red to me, but it's your face and you should know! - but it's the "beautify" look that seems to be the big issue. Looking really carefully, like any human being your skin has subtle imperfections which the GoPro unkindly reveals, but the Action 3 seems to smooth them out in some way. In all other images, you really have to compare the side by side images carefully to detect any significant differences in resolution. And of course when you look at footage from one or other camera in real life, you won't have that side-by-side comparison to check, so if I owned the Action 3, I'd be happy (also at the price), except for when shooting a face close up, and then it just doesn't look right. I'm half way through this carefully made video but it's 2am here, and I shall be sensible and watch the rest tomorrow!

Oh, I prefer the DJI in that sample by a huge margin, that GoPro sample is that worst that I have ever looked :) especially that HDR sharpening is horrible, those imperfections aren't really there, that is mostly a combination of sharpening and noise with attempted shadow recovery. Fortunately, it is relatively rare, I chose specific light conditions where I new it would happen. I actually don't like side-by-side comparisons at all, it is not very useful in reality, but the viewers request it, so I include it.

@@TheHybridShooter Well, you are the one with the mirror so you should know! :) As soon as you mention sharpening, I think we are getting into the area of personal preferences - I suspect I like a little more sharpening than people with good taste... Over on the forum someone recently posted a detailed comparison of Action 2 and Action 3 and concluded that "It confirms my copy does not suffer from the focus issue" - well, this one will run and run. Come on DJI, hurry up with the Pocket 3, that's going to be my last purchase of the year. Unless you review something tempting after that!

This is a specific kind of sharpening associated with local tone mapping, where it tries to add back some detail to recovered shadows but it usually doesn't work well, it is a common issue with iPhone video. Pocket 3 would be nice, hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

Nice comparison, The best of the two cameras is the GoPro Hero 11's sensor/dynamic range in the DJI Osmo Action 3's body. But sometimes the DJI image is in linear mode, compared to the GoPro in wide/distorted mode. I use only linear, I would appreciated if both cameras were in that mode at the same time. The GoPro seems to use too much HDR tone mapping, the DJI instead washes up skin and sky. I just use flat mode anyway. I used Hero 10 and Action 2 in the past year. I find the GoPro footage much easier to grade and edit with mirrorless clips. I am really tempted by the better interface, battery life, water resistance, magnetic clip of the DJI Action 3, but in the end the image quality of the GoPro is definitely better. But the battery life is important when using it in the water, where spare batteries are useless. I will maybe get it to mount it for spearfishing. I used the Action 2, but the battery life and storage of the camera module are really limiting.

Linear on GoPro introduces to much corp and the loss of image quality is too high for me, so I don't use it at all. Standard on DJI and Wide on GoPro have roughly the same FoV, so DJI's ability to dewarp at 16mm is a big advantage.

@@TheHybridShooter well thanks for your comparison. We all have different needs. I used to have the OA1 and I miss its easy, legible interface. Also the buttons are easier to press when in the ocean with neoprene gloves, than the GoPro. It seems that GoPro is just doing incremental updates to its cameras. A bit stagnant. But the IQ looks better. DJI should allow to lower sharpening, contrast and have a couple of bitrates. In some KZbin videos of the Action 3 the distant buildings and trees appear out of focus. In the USA it is very easy to return a camera or anything if not happy with it. So I could try it myself. For my use the hero 10 and 11 have great quality, just a not very pleasant user interface.

That is because they release a new camera every year, so the stagnation can be simply solved by skipping a couple generations. Both of my OA3 units are fine, so I can't really comment about the reported issues.
