Great direct comparison. If I end up vlogging I might pick up that ETM001. I just ordered the media mod 3 days ago because I had massive wind noise on my first ride with the 9. However yesterday i did a test ride with all 3 mics covered with bits of fur (previously, i only had the top and bottom covered) and the wind noise is gone. For my rinky dink videos the sound is good enough.

Definitely etm-001 is my favorite based on your footage audio. I like the clarity and crispness. I know, you mentioned it's omnidirectional and depending on the application may not be the best choice but it would be my go-to mic for majority of scenarios. Others sounded muffled too much. Thanks for doing this test. I recently got the Hero10 and used the media mod mic a few times. I don't like it. It sounds tinny, and this is exemplified in your testing as well. I like the lab mic best, but it's not as convenient. I got a windslayer foam type thing I'll be trying out to help the onboard mics perform better in the wind.

I also own the Edutige ETM-001 and like it very much. But one of the most underrated mics out there is the Sony ECM-CS3. It's basically the Edutige, but in stereo when you need it. Disneyland or any theme park is a situation where you want to capture all the ambient sounds around you in a more immersive discrete 2-channel setup. It sounds great on a home theater. The only knock on the Sony is that it has a long 3 ft cord, which can get in the way at times.

Hey buddy, great vid. So all our vids here are using the 9, but with full foam cover, which can be a pain. It can come loose and get in way of screen or soak up water and become muffled. I tried two of the stick on wind mufflers over both mics, but wind noise was terrible! Some subscribers said if using the fury things, there's also a third drain hole to cover up, but I don't know where! Our problem in the UK is lots of rain!! Any advice very appreciated! Cheers, Jim
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 3 жыл бұрын
The drain mic is on the opposite side of the camera as the power button (I don't have the camera with me so I can't tell you which side that is). I have not tried to cover it yet but will soon. I've noticed with the camera on my chest and the stick on windscreen on the front microphone only, I get good audio. but I think if you just have the camera out and about you're going to need to cover all three to get the best sound.

Mount GoPro Hero 7 Black to motorcycle handlebars with a sound sponge, no helmet, while riding lean forward and shout at the GoPro when commenting. I get an echo in my recordings which can be heard at the very beginning of my recent Part 2 video if you want to see what I mean to comment, only going about 40mph there. Someone suggested it's the 3 mics on the GoPro causing it??? From this review, I am thinking of using my GoPro mic adapter with the ETM-003 shotgun mic you mention and the 90-degree adapter. (actually just saw they don't have that so maybe the ETM-008) Your thoughts and any links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for doing this video.

@ClintGibbs

The Hero 9 is still a good camera. But the hero 10 has GoPros own processor so I found it to be much more stable in terms of not crashing. For night riding the GoPro can suffer a bit so you need a really bright light. GoPros are just not that great in low light.

Excellent video. I have a question: I fly an open cockpit powered parachute aircraft. Sometimes I use a Gopro 7 black on a head strap. I fly at a BLAZING 30 mph. Looking for a suitable external mic to plug into the Gopro. I want to narrate the flight while minimizing the engine noise (engine sits behind the pilot and passenger). Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 2 ай бұрын
Honestly, the first thing I would try is to use the foam windscreen that goes over the GoPro. That’s what I do for narrating my mountain bike videos. It’s good enough that I can usually keep reduction to off since that is pretty bad audio. Without off, the internal mic on the newer GoPro is really good. However, if I recall correctly it was around the hero nine or 10 where the internal Mik got much better. The 7 was OK but not great. If that doesn’t work I would try the Rode SmartLav plus with a TRS adapter. Of course you have to have the mic adapter for the GoPro

I have the hero 5 black and I need an external mic like the Lav style that I can place in a separate location from the gopro so it does not pick up the same vibrations from the road. It seems the hero 5 black utilizes a clunky box adapter in order to use an external mic. Do you know a better way or do I have to upgrade?

Unfortunately, no, that adapter is necessary and it’s definitely clunky. Not saying there’s not anything else out there, but I have not found anything that can substitute for that GoPro adapter. If you want to get really far away from the GoPro, you could invest in a Rode wireless go system. A bit pricey, but it’s phenomenal.

@@ClintGibbs …. I need that RODE mic to work with my hero blk 5! Will it work with the klunky adapter? And will that RODE mic work with a GoPro that does NOT need that klunky adapter?🙏 this channel needs support, thank you!

The internal mic with auto wind reduction was pretty good. How does the rode video mic go sound by itself on the bike?

I haven’t tried it since it’s too big for me to carry out on a ride. But the windscreen is very good so I’m sure it would sound about the same as it did when I was standing still.

Thank you for your video. May I ask where is the built-in microphone on the Gopro hero 9 black and where the speaker is please? I see under the device something like one of those and in front also, but I am a little bit confused, maybe someone can help me find the right answers. Also IF the microphone is in front, the little windscreen put in the video in front of the camera, I would think it lowers the volume of your voice, but I am sure there is an explanation for that. Sorry my mother tongue is not English so I might have missed some point made there.

There is a microphone on the front under the lens, one on the top, and one under the power button on the side.

@@ClintGibbs Thank you, finally I am finding them all. I broke by mistake the door to the microphone under the power button: What would you do to protect it if protection necessary with rain or snow for instance or dirt? (I think it is lost somewhere on a prairie o: as I can not find it).
