This was a huge help for me, I'm brand new to GoPro having just purchased my Hero 9 Black this morning at the airport on the way to Cairns. I'm also new to diving and have just completed my Adv Open Water, so I'm excited to get started with underwater photography. Lots to learn, so keep the info coming. Thanks again.

You might need a housing for surfing even if its on the surface. Sometimes hard hits against the water can replicate high water pressures from being deeper than 33 feet.

Top Tip: be careful when climbing into the boat with your GoPro. I had a lanyard around my wrist, which caught on the ladder and snapped as I heaved myself up onto the dive boat, sending my new GoPro straight to the bottom. Luckily for me there were some very experienced divers with us (Jimmy who has about 15000 dives and has spent over a year of his life under water) and he was able to dive down with low air and find it in about 20m of water. Phew! (and before anyone says I should use a floating selfie stick the one that came with the GoPro is telescoping so I can stick my camera right into a shark or morays face without getting my arm bitten off and it doesn't float. Hence the lanyard) The best practice here is to tuck your GoPro into your dive suit against your chest BEFORE you climb out the water. Live and learn.

Chris - could you please advise about camera settings for night dive, deep dive and cage diving? And best accessories for these too.
@StokedForTravel3 жыл бұрын
For night dive the best advice I can give is get a good set of lights to go with it and bump the max ISO up a bit. Deep dive again lightning is key so a slightly increased ISO will help, but make sure it’s max 40m due to the housing restrictions. Cage diving - I’d still go with the extendable pole but keep it shorter, if you’re less than 7m deep you also won’t need the red filter 🤙

Hi great video very informative. I'm headed over the next year to do some bucket list diving, Dominica, red sea liveaboard wreck diving, then Cuba Liveaboard. Compared to the lower end PaS underwater cameras and video eq. from 15 years ago when I started diving this is incredible performance for the price and compact. What eq. , lighting and mounting do you recommend for night or low vis overcast days. Looking to stay compact and I realize that the light could cost more than the goPor
@StokedForTravel2 жыл бұрын
Hey Charlie - glad the video helped you out! Lighting wise the skies the limit,, but there are some pretty good value strobed and arms out there you can add on. You're right though, they can quickly become more pricey than the camera itself! I've also used a more budget setup using dive torch mounts, which might be worth looking into as well. Let me know what you end up going with!

Thank you for your video setting tips! I just don't catch (my fault! English isn't my mother tongue) the reason why you recommend MAX 400 ISO....
@StokedForTravel3 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped Antonio! Basically I cap it at 400 as if you push ISO too much the footage can become grainy. If you're diving in less clear conditions though you can up that to 600 or 800, or even leave on auto if you're unsure
@jean75892 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, thanks for the very instructive video. Could you give me some ISO video setting tips for the gopro 11? that would be for dephts of around 5 to 12 metres in the Keppel Islands in Queensland (where the water can be a bit murky compared to the outer reefs obviously lol) Also, filter or no filter since the gopro 11 have this automatic white balance settings that allows to crank up the reds anyway?
@StokedForTravel2 жыл бұрын
Stoked you like the video and it’s helped you out! For murkier water I would still keep the ISO auto, but push the max a bit higher for the extra light. I’d still go with the filter too as the white balance still won’t replace the reds and having it will make editing heaps easier 🤙

Great video, the video settings helped a lot. Would you say the red filter is enough for 10-20m dives. Or is it useful to combine the handle with a flash light? Is a flashlight and red filter useful together or not ?
@StokedForTravel2 жыл бұрын
Stoked it helped you out Thomas! Light wise it really depends on where you’re diving and how dark it is. Generally speaking though if you’re using a light with your setup, you won’t need the filter, as if reintroduces the full light spectrum to your shots again.

Can you still add a red filter in post-production? At the moment, GoPro is selling the Hero 9 and 10 for the same price. Would you say it's worth the upgrade? I heard about freezing for ages, taking a long time to process photos and draining the battery (for both models) and for that pricetag, it would be quite annoying. Cheers
@StokedForTravel2 жыл бұрын
Hey Lu, so you can add back in some red with colour grading - however the red filter is a much easier option and creates a better base for editing, so I would use it where you can. In terms of 9 v 10 if they’re the same price I’d go 10 for the extra resolutions and frame rates. Can’t say I’ve experienced any major issues with mine
