The Reformation provoked a strong defensive response from the Catholic Church, usually referred to as the Counter-Reformation, comprising the Council of Trent, the establishment of the Society of Jesus, and expansion of the Inquisition. Together these were highly effective in meeting the challenge of the posed by the Reformation, which nevertheless had a profound impact on European culture, reshaping a vision of European society in ways that continue to be important to the present day. Absolutely. I don't see anyone who can teach church history the way Bruce Gore does. 35K views is a shame. It should have 35 million.

Prof. Gore is right, Reformation had a great impact on Europe from many point of views. As Prof. Gore listed the positive aspects I think it is as well important to mention the less positive aspects. One such aspect was the fact that Reformation was a top-down approach so much different from the early Christianity. The German princes or monarchs decided to convert to Lutheranism or Calvinism and imposed their will on population. Main reason for this was related to the wealth of the Catolic Church (land, buildings, money, other assets). All protestant kings confiscated the wealth of the Catolic Church. Gustavus I of Sweden had no religious convictions but a great need of funds. In 1527 he uses Lutheran arguments (plus a threat of abdication) to persuade a diet at Västerås to authorize his appropriation of church property - amounting perhaps to a quarter of all the land in the kingdom Sweden+Finland). No religious conviction is involved in the early years of the English Reformation, which is a purely political strategy by Henry VIII in order to get his divorce. Among others, he managed to redirect taxes paid by population for the Catolic Church to royal treasury. By contrast another northern king benefitting from monastic wealth in the same year, 1536, is a committed Lutheran. He is Christian III of Denmark. Christian III becomes king of Denmark (and with it Norway and Iceland) in July 1536 after capturing Copenhagen. He immediately arrested the Catholic bishops, confiscated their property and dissolved the monasteries. Vast funds flown into the royal exchequer. And so on. It was a huge economic incentive for a king and a prince to shift to protestantism. The concept of cuius regio, eius religio is followed wherever a kingdom or principality becomes Protestant during the Reformation (with one exception, that of Scotland in 1560). German princes of a Lutheran persuasion have the authority, after the Peace of Augsburg, to force this faith on their people. The kings of Denmark and Sweden have the power to do the same, as does Henry VIII with his own special religion for England - Anglicanism. A second negative aspect was that of religious-civil wars that erupted in Europe between supporters of Catholicism and Protestantism. In many countries (Germany, France, England, Sweden, Swiss etc.) the war was very bloody. In total there are more than 100 years of religious war in Europe. This was the last religious war in Europe. People understood that it is very hard to impose the religious belief to others by force.

Oh I've done a lot of homework on the Jesuits recently. I would LOVE to hear your "true thoughts" on them... oh they still are in full effect today. I had no idea...I almost wish more people knew. Lincoln knew, Jefferson knew, Adams knew, Hitler knew, Napoleon knew etc..and they all wrote about it. But they sure won't teach about it today.

Once government got out of the religion business, people of different Christian traditions could live together as neighbors without savaging each other.

As a Catholic….. this lecture was fairly non-biased and balanced as given by a Protestant. Appreciate the mostly historical perspective. Of course, a little biased perspective would come out every once in a while, but overall is was very level handed. I appreciate he didn’t go on a Catholic Bash; so commonly seen in other Protestant lecturers on this subject. The Catholic Church admits there was corruption and inappropriate actions of some in The Church at the time of the Protestant Reformation. The Council of Trent seriously addressed many of those abuses by some in the Catholic Church and the Counter Reformation corrected many of those abuses.

At 4 minutes - In what concerns the authority of the Pope and the Church, you can't know what the Church teaches unless you first know what the Church is. The determinants of what the Church is are first, the truth about the relation of the body and blood of Christ to the Eucharistc species. You have four positions to choose from. And if the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox are right on this one, the question moves on to the nature of the Roman primacy. Is is a primacy of jurisdiction or not? At 9 minutes - It seems that Calvin's Eucharistic theology would never have been unless Luther and Zwingli had first proposed their positions, fallen out at the Marburg Colloquy and left Calvin to split the difference. At 12 minutes - Examination of what the Jews have historically believed about the afterlife discloses that the word "gehinnom" and "she'ol" are broad enough to encompass both a place of purification after death and the place of the punishment of the damned.

Bruce, I enjoy the teaching vids.....but I am not sure where you stand on issues. Does what a person belive matter ? As long as you go to some church or temple you are godly ? Does the influence of the Spirit on the person give sight to the soul and testify to the truth ? I was raised tn the Roman Catholic Church and it is darkness not light. Thanks for the history
@GoreBruce

+rich lawrence My purpose in this series is less about emphasizing 'where I stand' than trying to give an even-handed report of certain historical periods and people. I think my own perspective nevertheless comes through pretty consistently. I am firmly planted in the Reformed Tradition, and will have a strong tendency to see things from that viewpoint. Thanks for the feedback!

What if? What if I could clone Bruce Gore? Well, for starters I would have B.G. 1 help me through Gibbons' The Decline and Fall Of the Roman Empire. Next, B.G. 2 would guide me through the causes of the Russian Revolution. Then B.G. 3 would take on World Wars 1 and 2 and on and on. Rose Lynn Mangan

Why did the Protestants didn't agree with the penance of satisfaction?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 6 жыл бұрын
The Reformers affirmed the value of contrition, confession, and absolution. They objected to 'satisfaction' because it involved the notion of 'congruous merit,' i.e., a supplement to the merit of Christ alone. This was viewed by them as an insult to the sufficiency of the work of Christ in the atonement. They did not object to restitution if necessary, or to acts of religious discipline in the pursuit of sanctification. They only objected to any idea of 'merit' in those acts.
