Yay! Looking good! Just ordered walnut for a case-lid, combining it with some strips of the bog-oak I have lying around... :)

I just stumbled upon this looking for an aftermarket solution for this case. I love the case have used it for years, mostly with just the filter, as the thermals are garbage. It never occurred to me to make a wooded faceplate. This is genius. Great work!

Looks amazing! What colour is this case - the Anthracite Grey or Galaxy Silver? I can never tell! How similar does it look to the MacBook Air colour (if you have one to compare). Looking to try and colour match it :)
@snrd
@snrd 7 жыл бұрын
This is clearly the silver version since I have the anthracite one I can tell how it looks from the side. The anthracite version is a bit darker overall but has the typical silver-ish look when looking in front of it or with a light source shining at it.

That's looks good. I would coat it with epoxy or coat it with lots of urathane so it looked it looks like glass wood

I find the wood or wood & metal cases trend that was shown at Computex quite interesting. It is a more living room friendly option for people that seek aesthetic coherence between their machines and furniture, but I think that choosing the right case is very importantn. In this case I think it doesn´t match at all with the phanteks case. I have the ATX version myself and I love the thing, but I just think that, even though the woodwork looks quite nice, congrats to the maker, it doesn´t work out with the overall look of the case. Maybe if the shape of the wood piece cut outs matched the tempered glass corners in height and if it had two levels, the surface curves I mean, to match the glass in depth as well, it would look better. It seems like it doesn´t belong with the case, you loose the beautiful volume cohesion that the original panel gives you with its shape.

i must agree with you ivan,although a great mod idea i do not think that it suits this case at all,you are correct there seems to be something missing that makes it not look right,it could be the plainess of the panel itself...or as you mentioned it could be the height or leves...am not sure...also as i look at my evolve and see the front panel sits back inside the case frame this actually suits the style better...yes there is better airflow with this style so that's a great con...but aesthetically it just does not suit for me i would maybe have added some cutouts into that front panel to add to the airflow and also to allow LED or RGB light to filter out adding a little more to the panel and making it less boring to look at....but still an awesome mod idea none the less

I am a woodworker and was very intrigued by this video, and I must say that I also truly appreciate the concept of adding wood to pc cases. In this situation, they chose a beautiful piece of walnut with exceptional grain quality and coloration. The finish choice was spot on as well (though spraying over oil can be tricky for adhesion...see 9:50...), as it was not too glossy to clash with the glass, and not too flat to look underthought...Kudos Fellas!! However.... I still agree that there is something off about the overall look of this particular design, and I think I know what may make the difference: 1) I feel the wood coloration does not match well with the silver color of the case and clashes with it for attention. If the case was an all over black, the wood would be highlighted beautifully, and the overall feel would be more subdued and classy and fit for elegant display. 2) I feel they could have taken the time to shape the wood more appropriately. When I first saw it, I thought they went the cheap route and used laminated plywood for it was so flat. If the piece was milled out of a larger piece to begin with, they should have been able to somewhat copy/represent the bent elements of the original case design, for as a woodworker and fabricator myself, I can already think of a few different and relatively simple ways to achieve it in an afternoon in my garage with a few precision cuts and a couple of different sanders...in fact, I love the idea so much that if I had an appropriate case, I would actually take time tomorrow to give it a shot:-) They could have shaped it and ended up with a thinner but shaped panel...the one they made just seems a little heavy compared to its surroundings due to its thickness. Again, they did some things really well with a really nice concept that could actually fit this case impeccably!! But just picture in your mind an all black case with the same shaping in the walnut as the original front panel...mmmmmm niiiiiice......

I'm considering doing this myself with maple and have some woodworking tools, but not a planer. Were you able to achieve this without a planer? Or were there any problems you ran into with this?
@DuanDao
@DuanDao 6 жыл бұрын
Albie Clementi although it would have been nice to match the contours of the original front panel, this particular design chokes of front intake air, so with them making this front panel flat actually helped with air flow

The wood panel is gorgeous. Great vid. Maybe reduce the amount of camera movement. I was getting a bit nauseous. The evolve front also has a great form for a Punisher mod idea. . . I need more tools and monies.

Have you ever modded a solid, plastic front cover, making a screen/mesh section before? I have a Phanteks p400s and I wish the front was vented/meshed for better airflow. My old Antec 300 had a front cover like that, had way better airflow.

I've done similar mods. I'm able to do it, just not sure how well it would work with that case because of the weird angles. Are you noticing unusually high temps?
@chadjohnson3958
@chadjohnson3958 7 жыл бұрын
Vir1lity PC Customs the temps are higher than my old case, but not by a whole lot. My evga gtx1060 ftw+ fans run at a higher speed, which it gets loud at ~1900rpms. My core i5 4670k is running at 4.4ghz, 2.235 vcore, which it gets into the mid 70's when I am gaming. Was just wishing that the front had better air flow and I would be able to see my rgb goodness:p. The Haswell chips run hot, especially with just a hyper 212 evo cooler.

Too bad Phantek doesn't see the light like In Win seems to have done (806). Wood is going to be very popular and profitable. It really brings this case out. Good job!
