I ordered a kit and the 8mm bit and the mortising blades while the video was playing. Made a nice unit in walnut. The only thing I found was the shaft measured 5/16”. When I tested the 5/16 vs. the 8 mm, the 5/16 gave a slightly better fit. I’m a happy camper. Will be ordering a few more kits. Thanks JK-M.

Just what i absolutely love, easy and cheap tools i can make myself. I have literally started an entire shop by building my own tools. So far, mostly my hammers: brass, wood, and a few smaller ones like a chasing or a finishing hammer. Chisels? Sure, i have a few. I love building my own tools, i have 2 compasses in the works, and a metric ton of other tools. Its waay too much fun, and when i grab one of my own tools, it feels so good to use them.

Just finished making my marking gauge. Love the fun of making my own tools. Made one mistake that I’m glad I made. Countersunk the wrong side but it kind of keeps that side from chipping if I remove the rod and reinstall it. Plane on making another head just to change it up once in a while.

I just finished making one. Did not turn out as well as I'd have liked. Everything was perfect until I went to insert the threaded brass sleeve. My first mistake was that I used a short bolt which did not extend down into the 1/4" hole which means the bolt did not provide any alignment and it went in a little crooked. Then it started to crack the wood (walnut) as I screwed it down tight and a small chunk actually came off the top. There was an internal split in the wood that I did not see and it cracked there. In the end I was able to sand the top but the mar is still visible around the sleeve and the brass knob is at a slight rearward angle. It is still 100% functional. The walnut and white oak laminate looks great. But, it is not at gift level for sure. I will do two things to make sure this does not happen again. 1. I'll use a long 1/4" bolt so that it aligns the sleeve properly. 2. I have a cheap Harbor Freight tap and die set with the right sized tap for these sleeves. I experimented with some scrap wood. Threading the hole with the tap makes the sleeve go in much more smoothly and will probably decrease the risk of splitting the wood. A little epoxy should keep it in place.

If you cut the head off a bolt, you can put a couple of jamb nuts on it and lock it in the chuck of a drill press. Turn the chuck by hand (don't turn the drill on) to install threaded inserts while keeping them square to the surface.

These are great, I'm in. The only somewhat obvious issue I saw with the single rod for mortises is trying to secure the second cutter blade. It looks like it's difficult to tighten the second blade without it moving. Jonathan was fumbling with it. Sliding a rod in and out seems much easier than trying to hold that tiny blade and tighten it without it moving. With that said, I'll just do two separate rods in mine.

I've never had much luck with stock threaded inserts going in without splitting something or go in straight. I have typically got in the habit of using a dremel or hacksaw to cut two or three grooves across the threads, perpendicular to the body of the insert, as deep as the thread is high. I find they "cut" threads into the wood rather than force their way by trying to displace the wood.
