On this day, Shabani's children (Kiyomasa and Annie) were quiet unusually.
Shabani, a silverback gorilla, and Ai, a female, spent a little time together.
They are a very close gorilla couple.
Now we just hope the female Ai comes into heat.

Shabani was born in the Appenheul Primate Park, Netherlands.
Nene was born wild in Cameroon.
The other three were born in the Higashiyama Zoo in Japan.

I feel like Ai loves Shabani but not with much "passion" He gets along with her too. Ai is calm and pleasant She is still young. Sometimes I feel like she sees him more as a dad. I hope one day she mates with him again. He doesn't even force her I hope the zoo brings a new female to Shabani. At least that's what he deserves. The female will coexist very well with them.

shabani doing his occasional gardening "give..me..that..PLANT!!" lol nice to see a change in pace for once, i think annie/kiyo have gotten accustomed to their hormones and the behavior it can cause. and i do agree i would like to see shabani and ai get together for another baby, you can tell when one is in the mood the other usually isnt 🤷‍♂

I love Shabani and his troop. I know these beings are super smart. I hope we can find better ways of communicating with them again like sign language as KoKo was able to learn and her best friend Michael and making them feel comfortable enough to play games with us such as tic tac toe through the glass also connect the dots ❤️💯‼️

This is all very romantic, however she's apparently on birth control. The zoo doesn't want to risk a Kiyomasa and Ai baby.

shabani is very interesting, i've never seen him throw tantrums over not mating. maybe he was different when he was younger, but it's not like he's an old man now. haoko on the other hand is an absolute menace!! shabani, maybe you need to be a bit more proactive like your older brother, give us a cute little baby to enjoy! this troop would have the time of their lives with a baby.

He used to try to mate with ai over and over. I guess he just gave up after a while.

Shabani is a gentleman, Haoko is not. Haoko takes what he wants. Haoko just went berserk on Riki!

I doubt Ai will ever be a successful mother, her first one died and she was only 9.. that's to young in my eyes, following year she had Annie and she wasn't maternal. If it did happen Kiyomasa would be a nightmare and probably needs to be moved.

I don't know how much of the dynamics would change once Nene passed...I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Ai had to have a c section with annie. Unfortunately a lot of gorillas that have babies that way end up abandoning them. The problem is that they put them under, so they don't have any memory of giving birth, so when they give the baby back a couple days later, the mother has no idea that it is hers. Ai could do the right thing next time, but unfortunately I think that chance has passed for her and shabani. I don't think they will be intimate again.

Does anyone know if they have taken Ai off birth control? From my understanding she has been on birth control it would be nice to know there is a chance that she could have a chance to become a mother again and show she can successfully raise another baby this time by herself with no human intervention.

I can't say for sure, but others have commented on her saying that she has been off of birth control for a while. But I don't know if you will ever see her get pregnant again. Shabani is more like a father to her than a mate. I don't know if their relationship will ever be the same.

Let's pray not. As long as her brother is still there and in full blown puberty that is to risky. Besides if the zoo doesnt have a plan in place for the children no sense in creating more. Although I'm like anyone else and love to see babies.

How can you be an active mating type when the one you love is not interested. It is a crying shame what Sabani goes through. He deserves a normal troop with love from the one he wants. Maybe ai is waiting for her Mother to pass on. The old lady is very jealous.

It's sad. All of the silverbacks in Japan are stuck with very old females. While all the silverbacks are in the prime of their lives. Ai is the only young female, and she has no interest in mating. If they don't get new bloodline in Japan, these gorillas don't stand a chance.

Even after Nene passes away, Ai will never be intimate with Shabani. Clearly, Ai sees Shabani as a platomic friend. Kiyomasa gets plenty of love from the troop while Shabani receives none. Shabani deserves a loving wife!

Shabani doesn't have many choices. I've seen him try mating with Ai but she's not interested.
