Gosforth Handyman you put of set of gu10 lights up, then you changed them and said you would explain why in another video.

Ah, well spotted - I'll pin this comment! Forgot all about that 😂. I used some IP44 lights that I had in stock (designed for bathrooms) but the bulbs were recessed so far back (up in to the mounting) that you only got a really narrow beam of light out of them, so they were hopeless for anything other than a 1ft area directly underneath the spot. The normal (non-IP-rated) ones give a much wider beam angle. 👍

Enjoyed the video. I’m not going to attempt anything like that anytime soon, and certainly can’t comment on the ‘regs’ or the legality, just really impressed by your attention to detail, the tidy way in which you work and your overall professionalism. Thanks for sharing that work with us 😀😀

I noticed when you where changing a standard socket for one with USB charging outlets you had what looked like a red cable tucked unthe conduit and socket base . what was that for I'm intrigued. (Not broadband enabled or a long RJ 45 cable ?

I did my garage with the same metal back boxes, but used steel conduit. Bought a 2nd-hand clamp off Ebay to hold the tube while cutting the threads. For some reason the clamps were really pricey new, but not the taps. Also, I'd recommend getting LED bulkhead fittings over the spots (e.g. Polo range from TLC direct). They chuck out insane amounts of light which is great for a workshop, and they are cheap as chips. Also, you can fix them if they go wrong by replacing components on the controller board, which is impossible with the GU10s.

Ah! Did a later vid on the LED lighting. 👍👊

Good job mate. I think you give yourself more work with the junction boxes, I would have used a ceiling rose up above and made my connections at that and just took a switch wire and neutral and earth from the rose and looped the lights in and out and made the connections in a chalk box at each light for the gu10 lampholder. Would be interested to see what you done it that way. I am not critising you in anyway there is more than one way to skin a cat. Keep up the good work

Cheers bud - I honestly can't remember why I did it that way. There was a lot of existing wiring already up there though... but I do have a habit of over-complicating things! 🛠👍

I installed my RDA junction box with 2 circuits for lighting and power and it was the best thing I ever did. Before I had a lightbulb and a extension roll that used to get in the way all the time. Now I have 6 lights ,each with a pull switch and 4 double sockets in the proper places. It transformed my workshop.

Is that a ring main or a spur you're installing?
@GosforthHandyman6 жыл бұрын
It's just a radial circuit.

It is very interesting to see how stuff is done elsewhere. Here in the Chicago area all wiring must be in metallic conduit (thin wall) and metal boxes for all junctions and fixtures exposed or not, even in single family homes. I think that the screw terminals would better than wire nuts. Is the blue wire the neutral?
@GosforthHandyman6 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Yeah, Blue = Neutral, Brown = Live, Yellow & Green = Earth in the UK. Don't quote me on the regs but we have 'safe zones' in the UK (see this vid kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKS1pZ-Dbbupgrc) - if you're outside the safe zones you'd need to mechanically protect the cables (e.g. metal conduit) but inside the safe zones you can just run normal PVC cable. It's common to have plastic backboxes and junction boxes though (I'm assuming it's a fire/heat-proof plastic). A sparky will give a more accurate version of this. 😀👍
@monteglover41336 жыл бұрын
Gosforth Handyman Here the neutrals are generally white or gray ( usually for 277/480 used in commercial lighting ), general practice black, red, & blue for the hots on 120/240. All tho any colour can be used except green. There is a lot of accepted practices and codes.

is legal to install new electrical circuits in a house without reporting it to building control
@GosforthHandyman6 жыл бұрын
It's not a new circuit - extension of an existing circuit. 👍

Have you used Wagoboxes before mate? Brilliant in my opinion 👍🏻 strip all the insulation exactly the same length at the same time, so all cpc shrouds all the same length too. Speeds things up muchly 😃 nice work 👍🏻

The new Quickwire junction boxes look awesome for lighting projects! Have a look at www.quickwire.co.uk . They've got a sale on their starter kits that includes a great cable stripper for T&E cable. They would have saved Andy loads of time.

I have to admit I’m a little confused why you wired those sockets up on a radial circuit rather than a ring. All it needed was another 2.5mm twin and earth to the socket at the far end of the run? Seems like you’re limiting your load capacity by not doing it that way. Nice work though. All the best. 👍
@GosforthHandyman7 жыл бұрын
I only have a 16A main feed at the mo. so it's pointless. If I ever upgrade the incommer I'll extend the ring 'round at the same time but the cable route is a pain in the a$$. 👍😀
