Jesus first and foremost calls us into a relationship with Him. Many people are easygoing and lukewarm about Jesus's message but the reality is that He was an explicit figure who demanded immediate obedience and made it clear that you can't take Him with a lukewarm heart. You must either accept or reject Him; and being undecided or moderate is rejecting Him. Accepting Jesus and beginning in Him again fundamemtally overturns our entire lives. If we have fully accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we are His children whether we feel it or not and it's a relationship beyond feelings.

"To paraphrase Yoda" Tim said. It wasn't a direct quote. Now, tell me (without looking it up) what did Vader say to Luke in Empire Strikes Back (when he revealed he's Luke's father). Most get that one wrong. ;)

It was Job who came away from his encounter with God saying I not only heard you but now I have seen you. May that be our encounter with the living God in Christ

Tim says, around 4:50, Christianity is a standing, a legal position and compares it to adoption. I get all that. My question is in regards to the definition of “Christian” as I’ve heard it means, Christ follower. I know I’m an adopted child of God through my belief and faith in Jesus, but I “try” to follow His example through sanctification. So is being a Christian a position as God’s child, or as a follower of His Son’s ways?

+James Sharp I believe it's both. When judged by our works, we will never be enough and always fall short to the glory of God. However, following Jesus' example and doing good works is an important part of our faith, because we want to please our Father who has adopted us as His children, and bring glory to Him. It's a relationship in which we are trying to live according to our Father's will, through His Spirit that dwells in us and gives us the ability to desire and do good. That being said, I would like to emphasize that we are never saved by our works. Our works are a way to thank God for His mercy and salvation, carry out His plan on the Earth and glorify Him. Therefore, being a Christian is a position in a relationship. If you've been "adopted" into God's family, you are indeed His child and you do not lose this position when you do something wrong. That doesn't mean that Christians can go around sinning and no judgement will fall upon them. The Bible says that a good tree can not bear bad fruit. If a person claims to be a follower of Christ, but does not obey His commands, it could be said that this person is actually not a follower of Christ. A christian does not remain in constant sin and isn't indifferent to his or her sin. If we are God's family, He will not leave us when we sin, but we must repent and not stay in our sin. Therefore, I believe that being a Christian is both - a position in God's family, characterized by good works that He's set us to do for His glory.
