I'm swedish and since Baton Rouge is German and both countries are in the EU I checked Thomann... A few minutes later and now I have a Baton Rouge coming my way! I bought the concert version with cherry back and sides. No import beacuse EU and no shipping since I added a shaker and a rythm frog-thing to reach free shipping. Can't wait! Thanks for another great review Barry.

Baton Rouge - a more than decent, reliable German 🇩🇪 brand since 1999! gOOd job here! Like the rECOtimber concept, could do w/o the half moon in 3 and the gold tuners, but hey ☺️ And the price … ridiculous, really.

My cherry tenor model just came today and I love it! My in laws bought it for my birthday, with the help of my husband. Apparently I talked about it so much after this video that my non musician husband knew exactly what to recommend when asked for guidance by his parents. I replaced the stock strings with worth browns and it is absolutely singing.

Very much enjoying this review, especially since we only wrote about this series a few days ago! I bought a concert size with the wild service tree back/sides, which apparently is a little like rosewood. It raises the price a little, but it'd still be well under 200 GBP. It definitely sounds a bit rounder, and I do feel it's already changed a little since I first got it. Playability is impeccable, although I did get rid of the Aquila Nylguts asap... I'll probably change the tuners and strap button for something a little less blingy at some point. The only downside I think is that while the woods are local and sustainable, it's still put together in the Far East...
@GotAUkulele Жыл бұрын
Thanks - yep the far eastern angle change the sustainability - but then the vast majority of ukes are made over there regardless, so every little helps!

Amazing value. I could see no compromises in the build and appearance, except for matters of preference. And then you played it; Wow! A tone I didn't expect. Bright yes, not surprising given the woods, but so articulate and crisp. Are other scale lengths available? I'd love to see this in a concert. Excellent review. This one's a keeper.

Are you able to explain the differences in tones between this one (UTM-T) and the sister model, which is the UTC-T which i believe is the cherry option. Im currently undecided between this Baton Rouge & the Uma Moon ? Thoughts please 🙏
@GotAUkulele Жыл бұрын
I'm afraid not - not played the cherry concert. I'd 'expect' the cherry to add a touch more warmth, but then it's a smaller body so that will come into play too.

I don't quite see the "locally sourced" woods and using the term ECO if you have to send the wood half way round the world to get it made. A locally sourced sustainable Chinese wood would be far more "ECO". It has to be local to the production facility rather the the company HQ.
@GotAUkulele Жыл бұрын
They are grown in Germany. Vast majority of ukes made in China are using wood imported from elsewhere. Make it in Germany and it's immediately no longer £140. The Eco is about using sustainable wood rather than something like mahogany
@GotAUkulele Жыл бұрын
But also - bear in mind that anyone in Europe who buys a Hawaiian ukulele made from local koa wood is, by necessity sending it 'half way around the world' to purchase it. Nice idea that everyone should buy from their home country, but there would be no ukulele market left. Oh, and there are no mahogany, ebony, rosewood etc trees in the UK...
@MrGrahawk Жыл бұрын
@@GotAUkulele Although the Hawaiian uke only has one big journey rather than there and back again. I'm not complaining that it's made in China or the sustainability, which is a very good thing, but the use of the word local in the marketing which seems to be stretching the claim.
@PTRarch Жыл бұрын
@@GotAUkulelewhat's sustainable at using a wood that does a round-the-globe trip from harvest over factory to user? Koa is sustainable as well: all Koa harvested must be regrown. And there is a quota to that too. Islander (by Kanile'a) even have a "plant a tree"-series, with guaranteed replanting. What's sustainable at german spruce or maple, any proof of that? It's still a tree that gets cut at a plantation...
@GotAUkulele Жыл бұрын
@@PTRarch I didn't mention Koa - it's more sustainable than using mahogany, rosewood and ebony which are dwindling. The round the world trip would happen anyway (and some) with any Chinese made instrument (as the vast majority are)

Well, it's hard to say local or eco-friendly when that European wood has to go to China to make the ukulele where labor costs nothing and then come back here traveling half globe... The uke is nice but I don't like these selling methods. Great review 👍
@GotAUkulele9 ай бұрын
Agree to a point. Though lots more is going to China anyway. And it would cost many times the price if built in Germany - not an eco point - granted. The eco element is about harvesting sustainable timber not tropical stuff leading to deforestation.
