Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of a dragon, breaker of spiders and roaster of children. You know this is another chance to give Tolkien // LOTR some extra credit for being the greatest fantasy story. He understood what D&D don't even know the existence of. The Journey > The Destination. So many plotlines and characters end up in these places in S8 with the flick of a switch. Without showing it. Most of the endings to these characters are fine but the way they get to them ruins the moment. Varys getting killed by Dany is fine. But not like this. Dany going insane is fine. But not like this. Arya being a part of the Night King's death is fine. But not like this. Jaime dying with Cersei is fine. But not like this. Jorah dying defending Dany is fine. But not like this. The Night King dying is fine but not like this and not in Winterfell. Jon riding Rhaegal (for the first time) is fine. BUT. NOT. LIKE. THIS The journey the characters take, the changes to their character, their feelings, their self betterment. All these things were built up so well (for the most part) in S1-S7 but now they don't get payed off. They take a complete 180 and go BOOM didn't expect that did you?! There are so many needed scenes that are just not there. And sadly with all the normies on social media that defend this shit (Yes still!) this is going to happen to more beloved well written stories that rise in popularity and get corrupted over time. I miss the days when good stories weren't influenced by the incendiary twitter mob that spew out in the moment reactions based off a limited view on how stories are constructed and payed off. It's all about the moments for them rather than the momentum as a whole.

As a non-GOT fan I think what is more shocking than anything is that D&D took TWO years to plan the final season and yet it is ending up being worse than there prior stuff to plenty of fans. I'm lost for words how anyone can do that. Rian Johnson, bad as he was, had a first draft and that should have technically been worse. But even compared to TLJ, GOT is getting dogged on a lot more. @chaoszieg look, I'm not a fan of game of thrones, but from what I could gather about the story I got the impression that this jaimie guy was distancing himself from his sister, because she tried to kill him or wathever. It turns out eventually that he ended up fucking the blonde lady that played captain phasma in the sequel trilogy, so if all of this had a bit of logic I'd say that this jaimie doesn't care that much about his sister anymore, because now he's fucking someone else. And yet, apparently, he doesn't and he still wants to fuck his sister, so he betrayseveryone to go back with her😓. It's like he took a highway to go somewhere and then at the last second before reaching his destination he literally teleported back to where he started, ruining all the long journey he made until then. Now, I may be super wrong because I only watch funny summaries of game of thrones, but if this is what actually happened I'd be decently pissed. Abother example is the crazy dragon lady: from what I could gather she basically went from someone who punishes her enemies but still tries to help innocents to crazy psychotic genocider in 5 minutes, with her constantly whining before her switch because she was upset that not everyone was instantly bowing to her and accepting to basically be conquered. Also, her switch wasn't apparently caused by the death of the friend she kept on the hook for 8 seasons, or the death of her second precious dragon boy, but by the death of her servant, which I don't actually know if it is earned or not. Or mister "you know nothing guy that resurrected"; the way people described him to me was that he was a guy that didn't care about the constant backstabbing that was happening to get the throne, and instead was only focused on doing the right thing to dave humanity from the ice zombies, but then that threat was defeated without his help and now he basically wanders around like a lost puppy that doesn't know what he's doing and why. Or maybe I know nothing, and the show is still legendary and awesome, and everyone is overeacting😶. I'll still appreciate the beautiful dragon slauthering tens of thousands of innocent civilians though, because humanity is overrated. Dragon boys master race

Just being magical is a cheap shortcut to this that GRRM should avoid as per his assertions done until now about what his books stand for. Aragorn is more suitable being king than Bran is in the show and the books. Let's say that GRRM is setting Bran as king in the last 2books but what about the other 5books? Wouldn't be the same thing what the show is doing? Ignoring previous forshadows and hints?

I recommend you guys go watch Dragon Demands channel. His videos are long sure but he has been studying D&D for years. He's an admin on the wiki so he has to watch the interviews. He's discovered that D&D themselves aren't writers at all. In fact around season 5 (it was present before but got worse over time) D&D have this bizarre fascination about actors and emoting. Like it shocks them that actors can emote. And so they keep writing scenes focus purely on the actors talents. People think the spectacle is driving the plot, no it's the actors. And it's not the actors fault. There have been multiple interviews where actors have blatantly said how lost they were and given zero direction on why their character does things. Stannis, Sansa, Barriston, Catelyn, Arya, Danny, Jon, and other actors have said how lost they were on set. I know this sounds crazy but just rewatch this episode, or episode 3, or the next one and keep track of how long there are scenes with zero dialogue and just the actors emoting for long periods of time. This has been what's driving the plot in the last 4 seasons, not spectacle.

I believe there was some tension between D&D and GRRM mid way through the run. So, I doubt there was a deal between them, but I can believe that GRRM told them he was going to hold back the sixth book until they had finished the show, not to support them but to expose them and their dependence on his work. GRRM has hardly talked about the show directly for years, whilst conspicuously praising other TV shows. It may not be passive aggressive behaviour, but it's what it would look like.

Speaking of D&D, am I the only one who thinks these episodes are like a series of incredibly boched rolls in a P&P RPG campaign? Like, I can totally imagine the DM setting up this Night King NPC for several sessions over months, if not years, building him up through lore and making him the arch-rival of one of the roleplayer PCs, only for the half-drunk creepy dudebro who insisted on playing as a teen assassin girl, who have nothing to do with these characters, to come in and somehow roll three natural 20s in a row and OHK the campaign boss in one combat turn. So now all of the DMs plans and notes for the rest of the campaign are screwed and he tries to improvise by letting the PCs actions shape the next stage, but THEN another PC manages to roll two 1s in a row on a diplomacy check, resulting in them lashing out and murdering everyone in sight, at which point the DM decides that it's time for a "rocks fall, everyone dies" conclusion to the campaign.

The DM's words trail off as he smells the air and then he raises a single brow. "Have you been drinking already?" "Just a tiiiiiiny bit," Timothy says while showing his right index finger and thumb just a little apart. "So, where were we? Did you kill the Knight King guy already?" "I told you, his name is the NIGHT King, and no, he is currently in the process of towering over your characters." "Really?" Timothy flashes an impish grin. "So my Arya is there too?" "Um..." the suddenly question throws the DM for a loop for a moment, but then his eyes slowly narrow into suspicious squints as he answers with a tentative, "Maybe?" "Cool! I use Stealth and I go for a backstab!" "You can't backstab the Night King!" the DM protests, but the player only laughs. "Too late bro! The dice is already rolling! Wohoo! Natural twenty, baby!" The DM's eyes slowly open in abject horror as he stares at the D20 on the table, then he quickly says, "Wait, let me roll for a Detection check!" Saying so, he quickly hides behind the DM's screen and furiously rolls his dice and then declares, without even looking at the results, "The Night King's supernatural reflexes and supreme combat instincts allow him to detect you in the last moment and he stops your attack. Not only that, his towering figure catches Arya by the neck." "Oh come on, bro!" the player whines, but when it becomes obvious the DM wouldn't budge, he goes. "Fine, then I use Offhand Strike!" "The what now?" the DM utters in confusion. "Offhand strike. It's on my skill list. It allows the assassin to switch their weapon to the other hand and deal one additional, unblockable attack once per day." "That's bullshit!" "Nah, bro. And the dice is rolling again! Wohoo! Another 20! I'm on a roll, man!" "Oh no..." "And the damage roll is... another twenty! I can't be stopped bro!" "Oh nooooo...." "And as for the critical... drumroll please... BLAM! It was not dead at that point, hardhorne was a great episode in season 5, the wildlings white walker arcs was very interesting to watch. On the other hand it had terrible arcs like dorne, and the shitty sand snakes. The show started to become a mixed of good and bad writing at season 5, same for season 6. Then season 7 happened and the writing went down even more but it still had good scenes here and there. It was not until season 8 that the arcs went into dead ends and MANY characters were completely wasted when they were not assassinated.

In the blackwater episode Davos states that he never knew bells to mean surrender and yet in this episode bells mean surrender according to Tyrion, but Tyrion led the defence of kings landing in an episode where they ring the bells in warning not surrender

Yeah Varys says something similiar along the lines of „I hate the bells. They always ring for despair. The death of a king, a city under siege.“ The bells are also the reason Varys leaves King's Landing. He brings Tyrion onto the ship, wants to return, hears the bells (Tywin died, Chaos will happen), turns around and goes to Essos with Tyrion.

I feel they mis used the bells. Considering bells are a sign of warnings or alarms and sometimes for churches aswell to signal a time or something of prayer. If the enemy was to surrender they should just hoist a white flag or something

Special Rob to be honest? Just stop watching after season 6 episode 10. The first 4 seasons are legendary, 5 is meh, and I personally have few problems with 6. Continue onto 7 at your own risk, and head-canon your own endings.

Special Rob It’s mostly season 8. Season 7 has a nonsensical plot and absolutely destroys the flow of time, with characters seemingly teleporting to their destination in a matter of minutes, but it at least has great character moments which has always been my favorite part of the show.

The hackwriters are employing more and more the writing-school of Rian Johnson. As if that's something to aspire to. It only consists of "Hah, you expected X so I instead just did Y! Cool eh?" Subverting expectations is in many ways nothing but a premature ejaculation. The only one getting something out of it is the one having it and noone else. Pure self-satisfaction with no care about the other. All GoT does atm is merely fit all possibly cool looking scenes into an episode, regardless of whether they would, in good writing mutually exclude one another to exist would you have consistent deep characters and plot. The plot is driven by having cool looking scenes. The most vapid approach possible. I feel sorry for all the talented people working on this who's work now goes to shit because of some crappy infantile incompetent writing, when instead this could have been a series remembered throughout history.
