I watched Gintama as my 15th or 20th Anime and i still enjoyed it. When i watched it, i had not watched Jojo, which had references i understood due to memes. There definitely were some references of Animes i didn't get, but it's still my favorite comedy show ever and the funniest thing i've ever seen in my life.

What make Gintama's fillers so good is the fact that they use those episodes to develop and let us get to know more about its characters. Instead of doing nothing but wasting viewer's time just to wait for source material to catch up.

People saying the references are that shallow just outed themselves for missing all the other references. For example this clip already had an Evangelion reference that you missed. They go pretty crazy, not just anime but deepcut Japanese popculture in general. That said, I don't think it's necessary or even possible to know everything Gintama references before watching it, it's still an incredible show on its own

Katsura is a Gintama meme. Gintoki, the protagonist, always shortens his friend's name Katsura (ka-zu-ra) to Zura (zu-ra) for simplicity's sake. Or just to poke fun at him. It has been going on for so long that any nicknames he hears for himself, he would immediately do a rebuttal: "It's not x name, it's Katsura." Now this is a gag from Japan, katsura and zura both means wig in Japanese so he's technically saying it's not just a wig, it's THE wig. Then you'd ask, what's the difference?!

Half of the references are just visual and other stuff you'd probably understand by now; but the other half are either obscure references to a popular anime, a references to obscure anime, references to japanese folklore, or just japanese wordplay, most of which most of the audience wouldn't understand either. You might not get some of the older references, like Lupin III and Doraemon, or the more niche Japanese cultural references, but it shouldn't detract too much from the experience. If you don't get something you can always look it up, but depending on the source, the subs tend to have explanations added for viewer clarity. So just watch it and enjoy, I guarantee you that there are well over a dozen characters that you will love upon watching their shenanigans and the story is all over the place but surprisingly well put together.

Gintama has some serious arcs in the middle of their regular crazy humor, 1 second isn't enough to show that. I'm sure you would get a lot of the references and for the ones you don't someone will explain in the comments. "Stand up, Joe" is one of them, it is from Ashita no Joe, a boxing coach (bald with an eyepatch, Toradora also referenced him) telling the main character to keep fighting.

I think once you get the in-jokes of anime, like once you’ve seen enough tropes and references to understand when one is being called out, you’re good to go. You don’t really need to have watched every referenced anime, just enough to know when a joke is happening that’s really it. Plus, if you watch fansubs especially, translators notes keep you in the loop when it’s relevant

Gintama is a Shounen Jump series, so a majority of the anime references it makes are other Shounen Jump series. I think the only kind of out of the way anime to at least be familiar with is Neon Genesis Evangelion because the parody episode on that is pretty funny and one of the characters is a walking parody of Gendou Ikari (and shares the same voice actor). The other one that only plays into one episode is Sengoku Basara because one of the characters shares a voice actor with Date Masamune. There's a lot of Japanese pop culture references, but I would say you don't really need to understand them except for one episode where I do recommend watching the meme it's based off of because it's pretty funny. If you see an episode about a crying politician, it's worth checking out what the reference to that is since it makes the episode funnier and you'll understand better why Gintama got in trouble for it.

There are EASY references but very very hard references you would have to be basically raised in japan and over the age of like 60 to get... I mean like a TON of those. So its not JUST reference / paraody of anime but history and pop culture and old culture and music etc. It also does play on their language and puns including written. Most US commenters have NO idea they are even references.

Gintama will make you laugh and cry either way. It is a comedy in general but there are dark and serious arcs in it as well which will possibly make you cry your eyes out. There are quite a lot obscure parodies in Gintama, about the anime plot or character's lines/characteristics. They also refer to political figures, movies, and folklores a lot, both Asian and Western ones. But it's totally fine to watch it without getting all of them. In fact I think only very few people can get all the parodies in Gintama because there are just so many. And fun fact, Akira Toriyama (the author of Dragon Ball)'s daughter is a superfan of Gintama and started to watch Dragon Ball because of all the DB references made in Gintama, and Toriyama sensei wrote a thank you note to Sorachi (author of Gintama) for this lol.

I think the references are more like fun sprinkles or easter eggs (except for the occasional whole arc or two that are literally parodies lol). Idk, after you watch Gintama, there’s still nothing like it for me. For best enjoyment tho, expect layers upon layers of character and world building -just like with AOT, a lot of stuff are masterfully planted at the very start, and slowly over time, so best to catch on details as much as you can and recall them later for that oh so good payoff. But if you don’t remember (since IT’s A LOT) we’ll be here to help and remind ❤ looking forward to this ride!

12:00 Well, you are right and wrong here. For the most part Gintama is very character focused without a cohesive overarching plot to follow. Episodes contain all kinds of craziness that can't be summarized with just a few sentences. Some of it is hit and miss, I certainly didn't like every single gag within it. But when Gintama gets serious, it just hits different. It is just pure hype whenever the going gets more serious during certain arcs / episodes. There's a particular epilogue to a certain arc that genuinely brings me to tears every single time. It isn't a scene that would be on most peoples' immediate highlight list for that arc but for me it is a very powerful moment. There is such sheer variety in this anime that I believe each individual will find their own special moments that will feel impactful to them as they watch Gintama.

Gintama also has some serious arcs. Not many, but if you watch them they hit different and the studio always put extra effort in the choreo and animation.

Gintama was a pretty early watch for me in my anime journey and it's still one of my all time favorites. You don't actually have to get every single reference to have a good time. This anime is truly a rollercoaster of emotions in the best way possible. I can't recommend it enough and we shall celebrate the day you start watching it😂❤

there's a lot you wouldn't get, like for example "Stand up joe" is from a legendary anime called Tomorrow's joe and it's from 1971, it's just very popular in japan. I'd say just watch it and once you reach a point where you watched almost everything (including joe because it is a masterpiece) then just rewatch it again.

I think you should just watch Gintama, it’s the kind of show you will enjoy even if you don’t get the references sometimes, cuz the jokes are most of the time used in such a way, where you’re gonna still be able to understand and find it funny even if you don’t quite get the reference. I think it’s all part of the experience, when you go back to rewatch and THEN get some of the references, it’s more fun and you just get amazed at how good this show is and makes you fall in love all over again 😊 P.S. And if you really want to understand a reference you didn’t get, you can just ask the Gintama subreddit, someone’s surely gonna have an answer for you 😆

references are not just dress ups. also it references so many japanese reality tv shows and famous peoples like entertainers, talk show hosts, historical indicents etc. i watched gintama 9 times and i'm 38 and very versed in anime, japanese history (i also can understand a little bit of japanese) but i still find things i missed sometimes. also katsura always corrects his name because he hates the nickname zura, which means wig and he has silky long hair that he is proud of. (he has also nobility background, not so much of a high born but he is from a proper respected samurai family so he is big on manners and generally uses the proper name of others) most characters and their names are parodies of real key people from the era which leads meiji restoration. (expect for gintoki himself, the character is inspired from much earlier period) oh i almost forgot there are also a lot of references to 8bit and 16bit era console games and cartridges. even in this video i am pretty sure you missed at least 80% of references as far as i can tell from your reaction. like doraemon, evangelion, cowbot bebop, dragon quest etc.. there a lot word plays which require at least a little bit of knowledge in japanese, too.

I've rewatch the whole Gintama series 3 times already but I still find new references that I didn't get before like puns or culture related jokes that I found while watching other animes. I still find it funny and some episodes funnier than before. That's why I think it's ok to watch it even if you don't get all of the references. Also, Gintama is more of an "acquired taste" anime. If you like it, it will be one of your highly rated animes. If not, you won't like it no matter what. I hope that you will give it a chance and love it genuinely too. Lastly, watch at your own pace and without expectations. Don't get influenced by anyone when they say this is the best ep, arc etc. it really just depends on preferences. I myself prefer the slice of life standalone eps than arcs. Watch it head empty and get surprised with the crazy things they'll do. ENJOY!

Gintama is definitely one of the best anime of all time, if You ever decide to watch it, its definitely will be a long and fun journey, its one of those anime I never thought I need until I watch it, on that regard Katekyo Hitman Reborn was also one of the title I get reminded of. Also Luke, this is a list of Hoyo things that You might not reacted to yet, its a really big weeks for Hoyo and We might get a lot of stuffs for awhile: - Miyabi animation that You missed(ZZZ) - Genshin Version 5.3 Trailer(Doesn't have EN Dub, only CN and JPN since EN VAs is on strike) - Citlali Teaser(Genshin) - Sunset Mavuika animation(Genshin) - Mavuika teaser(Genshin) - All the Fugue's stuff(HSR) Personally I think Mavuika teaser is better to watch before Her Sunset animation, as of writing this We don't know when Mavuika and Citlali chara demo will be released, so that might be next week, Star Rail version 3.0 trailer is also next week, looking forward to Your reaction!.

no matter how much you learn about Japanese culture, there will always be references you don't get. Just watch it whenever you want, there's no point in trying to understand everything. References to Japanese culture I didn't really get but subtitles provide context sometimes. Like you as well I haven't watched every anime out there so there were some anime references I did get and some I didn't get (e.g Sket Dance which I watched after I finished Gintama but on a rewatch found it much more enjoyable). I've never seen or watched DB but found the shoe enjoyable despite the numerous references, with there being a whole episode dedicated to a db parody that I understood. Overall just watch it whenever you feel ready to, you can just rewatch the show after you've seen more anime.

Those who tell you that the references are minor/visual are obviously only familiar with the big 3 anime 😅 Gintama has episodes where they have references to characters and story plot (with no visual aids) in classic animes including but not limited to Fist of the North Star, Heidi (parody that spans over 2 episodes), Ultraman, Lupin, Evangelion, Doraemon, JoJo (literally an entire short arc dedicated to it) and also series that are less well-known in the west like Sket Dance (an entire episode as a collaboration). And this is just the tip of the iceberg! Not to forget that there are tons of japanese pop culture references like singers and actors. But like what many have said, it's better to just watch Gintama whenever you want to instead of putting it off until you are more familiar with the other anime series because there's just too many references to know. Besides, there are some subs (or fansubs) that provide translation notes for the early episodes so you can just pause the video and read if you want to, or just enjoy the show as is because I'm sure many people will comment on any references you may have missed out (: You are right in pointing out that no one skips any filler episodes because they are just as hilarious, but western viewers often skip EP1 and 2 because it's heavy reference on Japanese pop culture, plus it introduces some characters that you won't see until a number of episodes down later so some people consider that as spoilers.

Who you referred to as Leorio in the video is wrong, though his VA, Fujiwara Keiji (RIP) is also in the show, but you got Zeke - Koyasu Takehito - correct. That was the OG Tachiki Fumihiko, you have heard him as Yupi in HxH, but he is most famously knowns as Zaraki Kenpachi in Bleach and Ikari Gendo from Evangelion, this latter role of his even being referenced in Gin Tama

I think you are ready-ish now! Back when you checked out one episode you hadn't started watching the big three and now with Naruto (one of the most referenced aside from dragonball) and some other shorter shows added under your completed list-belt, i think you are more aware of anime tropes and some references than before! Some references might still fly past though because some references are events in the animes or maybe more subtle than obvious. and some are about japanese celebrities/politicians even. But subtitles can help with telling what the reference is usually!

As someone who has seen hundreds of anime, i would still recommend that you wait to watch gintama until you have seen more anime and more of the japanese culture (it doesn't mean that you have to watch every anime that has been referenced). You could still watch it, but you would have a much better experience if you wait (seriously). Btw just because you may know where the reference comes from does not mean that you will understand it. Always remember, people sometimes want you to react to certain things, so they always tend to say things that make you want to watch it. For me, it's more important that you have the best experience

There are some references that are quite easy to understand (like Gintoki dressed like Ichigo, from bleach), and others in which you need more context (in other episode you'll have to understand what zampakutos and getsuga tensho are to get the joke. Both are also in bleach, but you need more than just a picture of the main character of that show)

About the references in gintama: since it is a very old anime, the references are also old. You will probably realize the reference to bleach, one piece, jojo, dragon ball, death note etc but maybe not realize references to like evangelion, Doraemon , shin chan or gundam. And a lot of Gundam because many staff working on gintama worked on Gundam probably. There are also lots of japanese pop culture references and old ones on top of that but depending on where you watch, the [translater note] will help. Maybe you should watch jojo and evangelion then you will be ready for Gintama.
