About the opera part we call the diva dance: the original vocalist who recorded for the movie told them is impossible for human voice to change pitches of that distance so fast, so she recorded parts on different takes and they combined them, but later managed over the years to do it so she performed live. And among best covers is of course Dimash. As for the wardrobe, all costumes were designed by Jean Paul Gautier

Milla actually did at least one film before. A sequel to "Island of the Blue Dolphins". But this was the first film she really cared about.

Story Time: a little over 20 years ago, I was perusing my vhs cabinet full of Disney, when I found a tape I had never seen before; it was The Fifth Element, I popped it in and watched it with my grandma and since then, it has been one of my favorite movies. Funnily enough, I have seen The Medallion, but that actor I always associate with Mouse Hunt

It's funny seeing so many reactors raging over the scene where Korben kisses the unconscious Leeloo...a huge sign of how society's position on the issue of consent has changed in the past 30 years. At the time, it was somewhat inappropriate ("You're right, I shouldn't have done that!") but not a big deal, and it was basically played for a laugh for an audience that grew up on stories of Fairy Tale Princes waking the girl with the "kiss of true love". Not saying the shift is a bad thing, just that it's interesting to see how strongly perceptions have shifted on that trope. Re: campiness. This movie knew EXACTLY what it was, which is 90% of what made it so fantastic. Glad you enjoyed that aspect of it. Re: Chris Tucker looking like Prince etc. The role of Ruby Rhod was originally written for Prince, but Tucker ended up being cast instead. (I believe Prince turned it down, but I don't recall exactly). Milla was basically unknown at the time, and she did an amazing job of carrying the movie. If you like "wise-cracking Bruce Willis", you should check out Hudson Hawk.

We liked many of the same elements of this wonderful film, “The Fifth Element” - the world building, Chris Tucker’s steal-the-movie character performance (best ever)… etc. There are two instances where I caught a difference in our reactions; maybe you’d be interested. First: The moment when Korben kisses an unconscious Leeloo, with the intent of gently waking her up. In the 25+ years since this film came out, we have become more sensitive to issues of violating bodily autonomy, and there is good to come from that. That said, I’m pretty sure that today’s audiences have not only a different reaction to Korben’s kissing her, but have been primed by other messaging to see that event a certain way, and to misread what the film creators were going for. Let’s start with what we agree on: Yes, Korben DID make a mistake in kissing Leeloo to wake her up. What I think we disagree on, is: what was Korben’s intent, and what is the right frame to view it in. Korben clearly was NOT trying to capitalize on 'a quick feel’ or a quick sexual thrill by kissing a woman he was attracted to. (His face and body language, both before and after, tell us this.) Instead, I believe Korben was thinking something like this: “I’ve been looking for many years for ‘the perfect woman.’ Then, in a billion-to-one shot, this woman smashes through the roof of MY cab, and (also unlikely) I seriously break the law to remove her from being taken into custody. Then she falls unconscious, and the Priest informs me that she IS literally perfect, and is mankind’s most precious possession. She’s unconscious, and I’ve been left alone with her, and tasked with waking her up. "All of these things are so wildly unlikely, that they couldn’t be merely a coincidence. Is it possible that G-d or Fate has arranged things to happen this way? Is it possible that a Higher Power has given me an unchosen Destiny to fulfill, and that this involves playing the role of Prince Charming, who wakes Sleeping Beauty with a magic kiss? Waking her up in other ways hasn’t worked. I don’t want to slap her to wake her up. Why not try this?” Yes, Korben came to the wrong conclusion. I think current film goers view Korben’s action more harshly than what Luc Besson intended. I also think that the “every man is a potential rapist” filter is not as effective here, than the “Could-I-have-been-tapped-by-Destiny-to-roleplay-Prince-Charming” filter. (Among other things, it establishes Korben as having a romantic side, buried deep.) In no way do I think the film intended to message its male audience members that, “kissing unconscious women whom you’ve just barely met, is sort of OK, if you really, REALLY want to.” This situation was unique. •••• Second: when Korben is talking to Leeloo in the space vehicle (before the sleep regulator is turned on), I didn’t feel at all that he was condescending to Leeloo. I’m surprised that you did. Korben knows that Leeloo is capable, intelligent, and is at the center of something Big and Important. But, Leeloo could have been ignorant of parts of the situation (including the fact that Korben is on a mission). While all characters in this film are buffoonish archetypes, one of the things that attracts us to Korben, is that he never condescends to Leeloo - not once. •••• I was ignorant of recognizing the ‘Born Sexy Yesterday’ trope, until stumbling onto the wonderful KZbin video by ‘Pop Culture Detective,’ which discusses it really well (and cites ‘The Fifth Element’ as an easy example of it). I’ve since enjoyed and appreciated many of his other insightful videos, also. Best and thanks.

Another cool person in this cast is music artist Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws from Tricky and Massive Attack. I'm a huge fan of both bands so I always thought it was so cool he is in this movie. He's the British guy working for Zorg. I can't recall his characters name but he's the one that was controlling the cockroach while spying on the president.

Love this movie glad you liked it. But does the born yesterday trope really apply if she is thousands of years old (probably more) She is more confused and doesn't speak the language. So more of a fish out of water trope? (I obviously don't know much about tropes)🐟

Regarding the opera, the story goes that the composer wrote it specifically to be impossible for a human to sing, so naturally if you search this website using obvious terms, you can find some professional vocalists taking a swing at it. A couple that I’ve found I quite like; whether they’re actually good (and if so, how good) I leave to those better qualified to have an opinion. :) Regarding Gary Oldman, have you seen Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead? If you have, you know. If it’s not, it’s worth having on your radar (although being what it is, id honestly be surprised if you’ve not seen it). It feels like a film which is falling out of the culture, so I like to think I’m doing my part of remind folks it exists.
