The show Gotham had the rights to certain characters but not others, one of which being Harley Quinn. In order to get around their lack of Harley, they got creative and created two pseudo-Harleys. Barbara Kean and Ecco . Today me and Channel Pup take a look back at the Clown Princess Of Crime prototypes.

The Barbara Kean character just annoyed me. It seemed like they didn't know what to do with her. The actress was fantastic. It just seemed like every next season, she was somebody else.

I don't really think that. I think at the end of season 1, she was a different character than the rest of the season. And in season 2 they continued also swapped her out for a different kind of character, but then put her as a middle ground between where the 2 ideas in that season. Then I think season 3 continues from where she was at the end of season 2, and follows that through for about the whole season. I think season 4 is kinda rebooting of her character though, to where she acts different. But, the little anti man rant at the end of season 4 notwithstanding, I don't think season 5's version is a huge departure from the majority of her season 4 character.

I like the idea that Barbra Keen and Ecco each represent separate sides and story’s of Harley. Just like Jerome and Jeremiah could also be seen as the different sides of the joker! I am a little bummed I’m so late to the fandom lol

Jerome wasn't the joker though. He was just a phycho who inspired his brother jerimiah to become the real joker as he would have become if the show continued . (Even if jerimiah didn't admit it) Same goes for Barbara she wasn't ever meant to be harley she even goes bad in the comics they just have their own version of her in this and the other one is harley quin

@@rblxduelist while you're right, that Jerome wasn't the joker cause y'know he died. Jeremiah far fits the tall order the joker poses. I like to imagine that because they didn't have the right to the joker name they separated the joker into two halves which is why they made the two twins. Jerome represents that more maniacal, unpredictable, psychopath side of the Joker that's the anarchist. While Jerimiah embodies the more cynical, evil, sociopath who thinks before he acts and always leaves himself an out to not get caught. Even at the end we still see that Jerimiah retains his fractured sanity that gives him that unsettling calculating persona. I also completely forgot Barbara was in the comics and went bad so that's on me LMAO.

@@rblxduelist yea I see that however I feel like it isn't till the end that Jeremiah starts to also decend into the more psychotic and unpredictable nature that the joker is known for, and that Jerome had. Jerome may not have been...the brightest, but he was fairly smart and (like James gordon said) wasn't boring. He was a showman and all the things he did, he did with a flourish and inspired and audience just as the joker would. I feel like Jerimiah was a bit to calculating and lacked that showman quality that really makes the joker the "Clown Prince".

Echo's personality changing drastically after a head injury might not be so far from the truth. Psychological studies show that people with brain injuries are more likely to have Psychological disorders due to the physical trauma cased to the brain. This can also be seen happening with some real life serial killers.

While at first I didn't really care for Barbara, she eventually became one of my absolute favorites somehow. After her brief insanity period, around the point of her resurrection, she began to really shine and become a truly fascinating character. I'm so glad they decided to drop the Harley Quinn act and make Barbara her own character, and even practically a completely original character to the show. Yes there are certainly some very high ups and some very very low downs, but I can't help but love the character.

Barbara certainly seems to have been intended at one point to be a version of Harley, but it also seems quite clear that they dropped that idea before the end, instead moving towards the second character to be, and more blatantly, Harley. I would guess they had ideas for her that would no longer work with what they were doing with Joker so they had to change her to someone else and make a new Harley.

What you said about it being unbelievable that a bullet to the head would change someone's personality completely- a severe concussion can do it so a bullet would too. A head injury can also cause someone to become a mathematical genius or speak in a foreign accent. A dramatic personality shift from a bullet to the brain is well within the realm of possibility.

I agree up to the bullet "inexplicably" changing her crazy, even though yes comic logic is weird sometimes there are countless real world events where someone has lost or injured a massive portion of the brain a result in massive personality shifts even the overnight fluency in a language they had never even heard before, there was one particular famous case where a man in the early 1900s I believe had a railway spike shot through his skull and survive, however after the incident he was much more emotionless and displayed personality shifts, I believe his name was Phineas Gage if you're interested, but long story short it is entirely plausible to suffer brain trauma like a gun shot and act entirely different mentally afterwards

While I respect the Barbara/Echo series, I do not appreciate the Margot Robbie slander. She was phenomenal and in no ways is it her fault for being overly sexualized. In the comics she is very overly sexualized and not to mention Robbie mentioned she wasn’t comfortable with all of it, however a role is a role and i’m sure she was more excited to play such a.. complex character. Margot did a fantastic job in Birds of Prey and it was really annoying to see how you guys completely disrespected her entire performance based on something she had little to no control over.

I started watching the show because of KZbin compilations. I remember the first time I saw Barbara my first thought was she was Harley Quinn. It wasn’t until I found out she was Jim’s wife that I realized it wasn’t her. Also with echo even though she was with Jeremiah I was still questioning if that is Harley Quinn.

So obviously, if the parts of your brain that control your personality are damaged, that changes who you are. It actually happens a lot, where someone suffers brain damage and comes out a totally different person.

They did Ivy’s character like a flower. She went from a seed to a bud to full bloom. That’s why they changed actresses. The writers wanted to show Ivy’s development like a plant.

She was supposed to be seductive and plot against Bruce after the age-up before they just made her Penguin's goofy sidekick for a good while. Vee i like your vids on Gotham and really dig your takes on the characters yet Barbara Kean being a precursor or cut-out of Harley is the one notion I can not agree with and such a comparison does . Barbara a great disservice from day one, Barbara Kean was out for self her alliances outside of Tabitha were always means to a end as opposed to loyalty and gotham gave depth to a known yet faceless character you can see this Barbara being the mother of Batgirl/Oracle

Honestly, Barbara Kean was one of my favorite characters on Gotham. She was badass, one of the major crime lords in the city at one point, and I was always excited to see what she was going to do next. Also, I think Margot Robbie is one of the best Harleys we’ve had. I thought the general consensus was that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the redeeming aspects of the Suicide Squad movie:)

Sam van Esch Women hate the margot harley because they aren't like other girls and it's an overused Halloween item, fair enough. But other than overhype even if she wasn't a 1-to-1 of the character, I thought she was very entertaining, probably one of my favorite versions. Maybe just not a harley fan. But they tried to make her more like the TAS version in the two sequels especially The Suicide Squad moreso. I just thing everything from design to everything about this harley was my favorite. what it really comes to is that Gotham writers didn't know what to do with Barbra so they made her close to Harley Quinn as possible then once rating started to fall then thats when they kinda dropped her and started the new Harley Quinn. As someone who's only recently started getting into DC Comics, I have to say that I absolutely hate that there's a dude called BRUCE TIM working on Batman stuff. Every time I hear "Bruce-Tim-Era", I immediately think that it's about Tim's run as Robin. But NO! It's talking about that dude....

I agree and disagree. He made some of the best batman content once. He led the art department for Mask of the Phantssm and all of the batman animated series. It's just later when he had more agency and worked on things by himself that he did fuck shit with batman. Example= the killing joke

Am I the only person to have hated Alfred in this show. He was so annoying, and wanted so bad to be Bruce’s dad. And fails as a parent completely. He also was so nosy, like sir your his butler.

this show is incredible because the characters are all so likeable except the ones you're supposed to hate like mayor aubrey and commissioner loeb. i found myself rooting for the "bad guys" like jerome and victor zsasz more than i care to admit. i can't pick a favourite character because they're all as flawed as each other
