Your stuff about the Easter eggs was spot-on, but I think this show is still very compelling, beautifully shot, excels in tone, and has an impeccable cast. It does have its flaws but come on, we're still in the pilot stage here. I hate it when people judge an entire show by the few 2 or 3 episodes. It needs to grow and reach a specific point at which it has gained enough confidence to go bold and go unique. So far, I'm still loving it.

I'm hoping it gets better. However, in my personal opinion, the comic book elements being tossed in here, alongside the darkly realistic tones... don't seem to mesh well at certain points. I mean, part of what makes a lot of these crazy characters interesting, IS how subtle they are: the Joker and the Riddler can go either way (at this point, so could Cobblepot). Getting to the point of the characters, should be a lengthy road (somewhere in the middle in terms of pacing), and a carefully handled one at that. Particularly with Edward Nigma, Pamela Isley and the Joker (seeing as Bruce is still a kid and all). But, it's all subjective, of course. It's only been two episodes.
@dignerds10 жыл бұрын
Cole Samoth I don't think the way this show has portrayed these characters is that far at all away from being subtle ....in fact they are still a far cry from who they will be.... their unique personality quirks are strongly depicted ..that's it. Personally I'm tired of "muted" characters in comic book live action...this show is BOLD and has a lot to say....this lore is rich with opportunity ,so they can afford to get to the point..anyway that's the way I see it....

The thing that bothers me is how old the villains are. They're gonna be old as hell by the time Bruce becomes Batman.
@darrellglover49310 жыл бұрын
Penguin ALWAYS been older than Batman. Riddler's age vary depending on the comic book era, and even with that he's only like 10-12 years older which makes little difference if Batman emerges in his mid-20's and Riddler is like in his 30's. Catwoman on the show is 13 which is virtually the same age as Bruce on the show.
@dcskaeur9 жыл бұрын
I don't think they're supposed to be easter eggs. Gotham is basically one huge origin story of Gordon, Batman, and all the villains, so it makes sense that they tell you "Here's Batman, here's Catwoman, here's the Riddler, here's Poison Ivy, and here are their origin stories" instead of being like "this might be the Riddler, so we'll see what happens to him for a while and if he isn't then we have wasted your time and screw you lol yolo"

The can't have the Waynes parents being alive in the show because it defeats the purpose of what the show is about. Gotham is a Jim Gordon centric show. Not Waynes centric, if the Bruce wanes parents are alive then they can't introduce Jim Gordon because he's first day at work in GPD is when they got murdered. Also i disagree on the Bruce Wayne training himself/burning his hand part. I don't see him trainings himself to be batman..i see a 11 year old boy with huge expectation on his shoulders because his parents are one of the most powerful people in Gotham trying to deal with the traumatic experience of see his parents getting shot right in front of him. he was listening to rock music and drawing some disturbing shit on the note book trying to deal with whats happening. Even Even Alfred said he has nightmare, cutting himself. I think people are jumping to the conclusion when he says "I'am testing myself" people immediately think "Oh he's testing himself to be batman" just because they already know he going to be batman in the futures Instead of thinking "oh he's testing himself so he can deal with the horrific and traumatic experience he's has experienced" Also i disagree with the character aren't being flushed out...it really hard to flushing out multiple character in the span of only two episodes." I agree with the tone though. i feel like the trying to find what tone there trying to go for. First episode was meh. But i liked the second episode. I gave this show 8 more episode before i say i like it or not.
@TheKnight21210 жыл бұрын
In regards to the Waynes stuff, the people behind the show have already admitted there will be changes to the lore and it's going to have its on spin on things. So they very easily could have had Jim Gordon being a cop while the Waynes are alive, they could even have had the Waynes interact with Gordon and let Gordon see not everyone in Gotham is corrupt. That way when they are killed it could have had a more deeper impact for Gordon and just give a bit more of an emotional feel to the show. There was potential there to do something with the Waynes and it was wasted.
@Eastboy12210 жыл бұрын
Good point but people can also make the argument of that it could complicate the story even more rather then improve it. On paper is sounds awesome but executing it is different story. if Jim Gordon a cop trying to fix Gotham and the police system while Selina kyle story going on and the penguins storyline is playing about. And now add the wayne family and falcone storyline will complicate thing in show in my opinion. Hell people are already unhappy with too many storyline and character being put in the show even though it the second episode, imagine what happens if they add the Wayne family aspect to it. But that's just my opinion . Some people may find that Wayne family aspect cool and now a wasted opportunity but for me i rather see how greatly the Waynes death have a negative impact on the city and, causes the rise of the villains we see today and see how Bruce and Jim Gordon deals with it.
@TheKnight21210 жыл бұрын
Eastboy122 I'm not saying the Waynes needed to play a big part, and they could tie in with all of those storylines. Selina Kyle tries to pickpocket Thomas Wayne, but she is still leaning the ropes and Wayne catches her, instead of turning her in he hears her story, and gives her some money then gives her some advice. Cobblepot, in some versions of The Penguin his family has a history with the Waynes and Cobblepot hates them, that could easily be fitted in as well with just a few off hand comments or a confrontation with them, just something minor that would show the history, make a connection but wouldn't require much more storyline. The Falcone story would be a bit bigger but still wouldn't require much, maybe the mob is angry at the Waynes because they are the shining light of Gotham and can't be bribed and have caused the mob some problems, not a big issue but enough to warrant some remarks from Falcone and other mobsters about it. Then you have Jim Gordon, a new cop in Gotham, who has hope to make it a better place, but after a couple months he starts seeing all the corruption and starts losing faith, feeling everyone in Gotham is corrupt, one day though he sees Selina Kyle a young girl pickpocket a very obviously rich looking man, but she gets caught, Jim starts walking over ready to do his job, as he gets closer he hears Selina telling Thomas Wayne her story and why she is pickpocketing, Jim feels sorry for her but knows that the rich people of Gotham don't care, but then Thomas Wayne takes all the money out of his wallet and gives it to Selina, then gives her some advice on finding a better life and such. Jim watches her leave and then goes up to Wayne, shows him his badge and asks why he helped that girl even though she just tried to rob him, Wayne then says something along the lines of "I have plenty of money while that girl doesn't, the job of the rich isn't to look down upon people with less, but to strive to help them, to help give them hope that things will get better". This renews Jims faith that what he is doing is the right thing to do and that he can't give up, and that not everyone in Gotham is corrupt. Then a few months later the Waynes are killed and Jim, Selina, The Falcones everyone has a reaction to it and it actually has an impact on the show. The audience feels more emotion and it adds another layer of depth to the show. Sorry to ramble on so much but I got caught up in writing that lol. But it just shows there was a potential there to give the Waynes death more meaning and also have them as just minor characters that don't overfill the already full storylines going on, they just add a little extra to those storylines.

I do not see why not. Bruce died the same night his parents had, so everything from that POINT on is him evolving into TDK. Having him sitting back and grieving will defeat the COMPLETE reason he becomes Batman. Bruce is a tortured soul that never truly grieved and let go. It MAKES PERFECT sense for him to immediately starting that transition.

That makes sense, but because of how some parts of the show are put together (the cartoony callouts for all the villains) i guess i saw it more as the show not giving the character time to grow and rushing it. After watching this review, I all of sudden feel like this show isn't worth my time. They already missed out on the potential. What turns me off the most is how they are already calling each character by their hero/villain name before they even transform into that hero/villain. It's like they think the audience is stupid or something and leave them no opportunity to ponder who could be who....if that makes any sense. So ya...Thank you Jeremy for this review. I will not be wasting my time with this show.
@ItsYaGameBoi_JR10 жыл бұрын
who are they calling by their names? penguin is obviously the most outstanding but that's accurate since he was always made fun of when he was younger for it. the ivy thing is a little dumb but it's claimed to be a nickname from the producers so eh. same with Selina but again that's an Easter Egg because they used to call Catwoman The Cat back in the day. They're trying to get the world building out of the way now so it doesn't sit there and equally piss off people for not mentioning the obvious. I don't think they plan on having a lot of seasons, maybe 4 or 5 max, so they're trying to make you understand that Gotham is cesspool of villainy and the birthplace of some of the worst of them. I have a feeling this will lead to a Batman year one show that will build off of this. we will have to see how it unfolds cause a lot of the time the first few episodes of a show suck ass

@PauLtus_B10 жыл бұрын
It really can't be that hard to come up with a decent tv show that's basically about a good cop in a city that's just a giant corruption hole. And with some subtle references, there are mob families in Batman, have those in there. But indeed, it's "LOOK BATMAN STUFF" and then the Batman stuff just becomes stuff. I like the Hobbit movies somewhat, but still it feels like a very expensive mini series, and it basically could've been one movie, and one that's not 3 hours long. It seems like it's more of a LotR fan fiction movie than an actual movie version of the book, with again, just a lot of stuff. There's so much you could cut out of these movies without changing the bigger story. Also I really don't know how they're planning to fill up a movie with what's left of the story now. Also when I the first trailer came out, I just thought: "They can't use that music!" although of course they can, it's the same people who made it, but it just isn't really worthy...

I thought Ben McKenzie did a terrific job embodying young Jim Gordon, I also like the way you get see the beginning of Gordon's idealistic nature getting chipped at. Frostbite Gaming I totally agree. (SPOILER) Especially now that she's doing all that Ras al Gul stuff where's she's apparently the demons head. It feels weird. I think the show will follow Jim Gordon for four or five seasons (if it gets that far), and then in season five or so it will jump 15 or 20 years and be more focused on Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. Jim will still be a main part of the show maybe a Lt. in the GCPD on his way up to Commissioner and maybe he'll dislike Batman at first and there will be this whole rivalry between the two, or maybe it will be Jim working with Batman behind Harvey's back like he's doing with Cobblepot now. The thing about Batman is that the lore is so deep and has had so many retellings and refinements that there is no limit to what they can do with the show.

Here's the thing about Easter Eggs: The entire reason they're called Easter Eggs is because _they're supposed to be hidden._ The fun of Easter is in the egg hunt. And it's DEFINITELY not fun when there's just some dude throwing the eggs at your face screaming "HEY, LOOK AT THESE COOL EGGS I PAINTED. DON'T YOU WANT SOME?" That's what this show is doing. I agree that the easter eggs could be more subtle, but I really didn't mind how they showed them. I actually really enjoy the series. I love the chemistry between Harvey and Jim. Great cop duo. I'll admit that when I first hear of Gotham being produced, I was unsure about it. I mean a Batman show without Batman? Come on. And while it would be cool to save the Wayne's death for like the season finale, I didn't mind that it happened in the first episode. Honestly, I loved the first episode and I like the series. I feel like this show, along with really any show can't be judged too heavily based on only two episodes. Most shows don't have that perfect start. It actually takes a few episodes to really get going and find their footing. Look at Agents of Shield. The first few episodes were OK. But eventually the episodes started getting better and the show went up for me. I have a feeling Gotham will be the same way. Let a few more episodes air and see what they do with these characters. Who knows, they might just surprise you. :)

I remember laughing my ass off after seeing/hearing so many people get pissed at the fact Batman wasn't going to be in it. Seriously, wow. The show-runners have said it several times: "this is not a Batman show". I mean, the whole concept revolves around the characters and how they strive in a hellish city like Gotham. Really, did this HAVE to be a Batman show? Was that the justification for why some people were so upset? Damn.
@masterDarts418810 жыл бұрын
Zorro3k6 He makes a good point about he Wayne's. But the show didn't just ignore them. In fact a good portion of the first two episodes involves the death of the Wayne's and why it happened. The next episode will also be dedicated to finding out who murdered them. The show seems to be layered, and it unveiling it one episode at a time. So it isn't like John won't get what he wanted, most likely a majority of this season will be showing the impact the Wayne's and Falcones had on Gotham but just in a different way then most people expected. Which i'm honestly okay with, because when you know what's going to happen you can't really be that invested in it.
@Zorro3k610 жыл бұрын
Hannibal Rasberry I completely agree with you. I like how it was handled. And who knows, perhaps we'll get flash backs with the Waynes. It would be cool to see them being one of the pillars. I was just surprised it happened in the first episode. As such we really didn't get to know them as characters. Which I'm fine with seeing as how Jim is the main character. So yeah, I can't wait to see what they do next. I've been a fan of the show since the first episode.

Zorro3k6 Honestly I hope it does work out. There isn't a lot of good TV anymore. And I wouldn't mind this working out. When I first heard about it, I thought ti would be stupid, but i've been surprised so far. I'd like to keep being surprised.

Hannibal Rasberry I hope so too. Fox needs another good show. Except that's the problem I saw. As I said earlier, I was on the fence about this show given the time period. But after a while I got over it and decided I will check out the pilot episode when it airs. Then another thought crossed my mind. It's airing on Fox. That means if it's any good, Fox will most likely cancel it after like 5 episodes, haha. I really hope not, but it seems like every good show they have, they cancel. Until Gotham aired, I hadn't watched anything on Fox in years.

Johnny Boy yeah I supposed so. I guess I got overly subjective haha. They Harvey - Gordon dynamic was well done, and Cobblepot is the diamond in the rough. Hopefully, they'd clean up the rest of the season, though I still maintain that so far it's been underwhelming.

I agree that they shouldn't have been so quick to kill off the Waynes. Could have made the show much more interesting, cuz I think a show based solely on Jim Gordon's origin is gonna run outta steam pretty quick. I will say this, Arrow did not have such a great start either but it got much better so just keep watching.

the problem is the tie ins, for example it being a cop show, most of the crimes will be somehow investigated by them so you will probably see zazz(oh however you write his name) and black mask, but the problem is, if the police can arrest them, why would they need batman?

TheHammerGamerG that works on theory... but on a movie or series, not so much,.. understand im not bashing the series or saying its impossible to make or anything... just that im really skeptical on how it will be... its the first episode and bruce wayne is already training to became batman, Nigma is already half psycho(he seems to lose it when Gordon answer a riddle thats old and dumb) so all im saying is, they got this whole universe can they pace themselves?
@masterDarts418810 жыл бұрын
Matthew Skinner Keep in mind a good part of the past two episodes have been investigating the Wayne's death. So it's not like the show is just going to ignore them. It seems like season one will be the fall of Gotham because of the Wayne's murder. And it's not like the CW they don't get 24 episodes. So they have to pace the story telling a lot differently. When Jim Gordom came into Gotham in the comics the city had already gone to shit. So it's possible they want to show us that with him trying to fight it as best he can this time.
@masterDarts418810 жыл бұрын
Marcos Danilo Because they break out. That's the whole flaw of the system. The bad guys learn how to work it. And they are able to get away with a lot of things. And guys like Zazz go to arkham where they always escape. People like Black Mask are never really caught, because they're too high up in the ladder. Just like Falcone, they have cops working for them as well.
@Matt789510 жыл бұрын
The pilot was ok but I have no interest in watching the rest. As you said, they just have too many big Batman villains running around, putting their faces in shot just cuz. I would have been ok with Cobblepot, because by the time Bruce Wayne becomes Batman, Cobblepot is supposed to be an middle-to-old aged man. But I'm not ok with Catwoman, Riddler, Joker etc. This could have been a great series showing how Gotham City went to shit. It should have had the Waynes for at least the first season, maybe second and third. It should have shown them built up their fortune, try to make the city better, but then have the Depression hit and a complex series of events which eventually leads to their deaths. Amongst this you can have growing corruption in the police force, and perhaps a struggle between the good elements of the city vs the Mafia, and the Mafia eventually win out. It would have been the ultimate tragedy. The Waynes die at the end of season 3, season 4 picks up 8 years later with Wayne leaving Gotham to train with the League of Shadows. Season 4 shows Wayne off training in Tibet while the real supervillains take over Gotham and the Mafia start to lose power. Seasons 5-8 are Batman. That would have made a great TV series, instead we get this with DC characters gurning into every other frame.

To be honest when I saw the comedian the first thing I thought of was that guy looked like the guy who plays Flash in the other series lol!! Hope it isn't the Joker though. The one thing that made Joker great is they always used a "Less is More" approach to the character by not directly addressing his origin story in the latter versions.
@CouncilofGeeks10 жыл бұрын
Damn. It hadn't even occurred to me that they could have kept the Waynes around, because he's right that would have made for some awesome world building that's never really been done with a Batman property. I thought the second episode was an improvement because it slowed down a bit, it was more measured and it felt like it actually had a story: there was a case and the case was basically solved. Yes the people behind the crime weren't caught but the immediate issue found a conclusion. That's way more than the all set up no pay off thing we got in the pilot.

I like this show, this is the best portrayal of Gotham, I love Bullock yet I wished he had his New York accent, I like the actress who plays Selena Kyle, and the cinematography is great. 1980Triumph No, he doesn't. If you implement characters into a series it should be gradual or quick depending if they are the main characters. "Hey guys, remember these characters.... yeah, we all have them in our series, so don't stop watching!" The pilot should set the tone for the series, not a place were you show of all your comming lore.

I doubt it. Smallville was boring to watch because it was nothing but BS teen drama for the first 7 seasons, with a little bit of superhero action sprinkled in, and then the three remaining seasons were cartoonishly written and had little substance. With this, at least you get some cop drama action instead of the cheap stuff. I do hope that this show doesn't go on for ten years and the last shot is CGI Batman whose face is only seen in green-screen closeups.

I feel like the show has potential to be great if they work out their tonal issues and utilize the Bat-universe in interesting ways and tell creative stories with it. We already lost the opportunity to prominently feature the Waynes, but there's still other places they can go in this timeframe. Why not have Tommy Elliot (Hush) show up as Bruce's childhood friend like in the comics, or introduce this period's Red Hood since the mantle has been passed down for decades. There's also a storyline from Long Halloween that has Thomas Wayne operating on Carmine Falcone to save his life and Carmine promising young Bruce he'll repay the debt by giving him anything he should ask for. Since Falcone and Bruce are such big roles in the show this dynamic would be great to play out between them. Also the show's called GOTHAM not Gordon, so what I think they should do (and it seems like they already are) is having a bunch of different story lines unfold at once from many different perspectives. They could balance out story of the police with the story of the Mob and the corrupt cops in between, if done right it could be like The Wire set in Gotham City, and that idea sounds awesome to me
@blackoutkiller5 жыл бұрын
Just coming out from watching Joker and your take on the movie, I really hope you go back and do a full season review for Gotham. I totally agree with the season finale should be about (or include) the murder of the Waynes. When I first heard about the Gotham TV show and thinking about it could work, i always thought that each season finale should have a pivotal moment in Bruce's life ie season 1 his parents' death, season 2 some childhood moment, season 3 (skipping years just to make an example) his disappearance, season 4 his training, etc. etc. I really hope Gotham goes well and get better as time goes on. There IS another easter egg. At one point on the second episode, there's a panning scene over the city and you can see a green big "Q" logo on a building. "Queen Consolidated" perhaps?

I had the same thought during the premiere episode. I quit counting after I spotted four villains in the first half hour. Fairly major villains, at that. It left me wondering what they plan on doing for the SECOND episode. I had the sense that someone's career placed a LOT of chips on this production, and they wanted to make sure that the premiere COULD NOT FAIL. That being said, I think overall the show has had more ups than downs so far. Jim Gordon completely rocks, and just about saves the show from its weaknesses. I like how they're setting Penguin up to make his move to become a major player in the Gotham underworld. I do fear though that we're going to be clubbed over the head with Selina/Cat for the entire first season. That's going to become really annoying really quick. I also feel that the pace of the show overall feels too rushed. Like they're afraid of being cancelled before they get to show you all of the COOL STUFF they have waiting in the wings. But then again, this is the same network that cancelled Firefly, so that might be a legit fear. I'm waiting to see how the next few weeks pan out. Either they find their voice by Christmas, or it'll just fizzle out slowly after that. Time will tell.
