Ironic, if anyone did leave, they missed one of the most entertaining games I've ever witnessed----that D5 move was absolutely insane----and white got a winning position with the London relatively quickly... IF anything 2023 is the year the London's potential was actually underrated and this game, no a work of art, shows why.

For those who didn't watch the broadcast. When that d5 move was played Anish could not understand the move. Even after looking at the engine which showed how winning it was, he couldn't see how d5 made Ding's position so much better. Only realising many moves later that it set up a mating net. That's how crazy d5 was when another super GM with an engine sitting at home with no pressure could not see the move.

d5 is objectively a worse move then Rb7. Rb7 wins much faster. d5 - with perfect defence from black (After Qb2 instead of a2) leads to an up-a-pawn endgame where, in some lines, white will need to sac a knight for 2 pawns playing Rook + 3 vs Rook + Bishop.

Magnus couldn't even beat Karjakin or Caruana in the actual WCC, and it's not because his opponents feared him and played for draws. It's because Carlsen is a zero-risk grinder and Caruana is an engine memorization type. I would say that no one takes fewer risks in classical chess than Magnus, and I would only be wrong because a few people like Fabi exist.

@@roberthansen5727 Carlsen is just ruthlessly efficient. Why take risks going for a win when tiebreaks come down to faster time controls where he absolutely kills both Caruana and Karjakin? Either of them winning the tiebreaks would've been an absolutely shocking turn of events. When he faced off against Anand, the tiebreakers favored Anand. There Magnus took risks and had decisive games. It probably says more about the format than anything else. Ian is also just a higher variance player than Magnus. He's more up and down and that's always going to lead to more decisive games.

Yes, and Magnus' playing style is based on playing very solid and waiting for the opponent to mess up, which in turn makes his opponents play very solid as well, ending up in rather "boring" or defensive chess. Most of the matches in the last WC were very solid theoretical matches that ended in draws, except for those where Nepo messed up while trying to attack Magnus and Magnus just punished him and won. Here you can tell that both players are taking a lot more risk and going for sharper lines.

One of the best games I've ever seen with Levy's reactions and Anish's live reactions.Recalling game 9 between Magnus and Vishy in 2013, that time Vishy lost but here Ding finds the checkmating net with d5!! brilliancy.

Glad to have caught the tailend of this game, when Ding made that d5 brilliancy, and Anish was struggling with the final blow and David finally figured it out. What a match! Great recap, Levy. You made it as exciting as the game itself! :)

Ian is relying on his prep and when on song, playing like an artist. Ding is playing on instincts, and providing one brilliancy after another. This match is chess equivalent of Federer vs Nadal. May the best player win. But hell, What match we having.

d5 was beautiful, but Anish explaining which GMs would - due to their search algorithms - be able to find the Computer Move Rb7 was also great. Would've liked to see a short analysis by Gotham of why Rb7 is so strong.

it's funny how Magnus' gripes w the WCC format is that it leads to drawish indecisive games, and in this WCC it's becoming more and more clear that that had less to do w the format and way more to do w the fact that Magnus is just the juggernaut of chess right now. Magnus decides he's not gonna play in this WCC and ALL OF A SUDDEN the majority of the games are decisive and entertaining for the first time in a decade

Watched it live with my own analysis board up. Was a lot of fun to what shortcomings the variations I came up with had. but I never played a classical game myself. The bodily reaction when Ding found Mate in 19 was exceptional. You could see them run away from their rest room to the board and visibly shake.
