Elo is basically chess power level
@pocarski3 жыл бұрын
Basically all you need to know about Elo: - For every 400 points of difference, the odds of winning become 10 times better in favor of the higher rated player (i. e. 800 vs 400 have odds 10:1, 1700 vs 900 have odds 100:1 and so on) - After every game you gain or lose points based on the outcome and the difference in strength, aka losing to a weaker opponent punishes you harder than losing against a stronger one (similar with winning). Your opponent also loses (or gains) the exact same amount as you, so the winner effectively takes some points from the loser.

Levy having an absolute meltdown about people not knowing how to play against the King's Indian Defence main line was A+. Can't remember the last time he was so worked up about something haha. I also agree with you about not playing main lines and the most commonly used openings. Like people play against the common stuff all the time, they're gonna be more used to it as a general rule. Better to play something a bit offbeat and unless your opponent is packed to the gils with theory they'll probably be on their own in the game very quickly.

There are three approaches to learning openings while you're trying to improve at chess. The first is to learn the main lines right from the start to whatever extent you can manage for your current playing strength. You will get good playable positions out of the opening in most games, but you will find yourself outplayed frequently in the middle and endgames by stronger players. The second is to learn a few less common but solid, safe, and easy to remember lines that give you equality with middlegames with easy to understand plans, and focus the majority of your time improving your middlegame strategy and tactics and endgame understanding. This improves your overall skill at chess the fastest but your competitive results may lag at first. You may find yourself unable to beat weaker players who just turtle up and play extra cautious as frequently as you'd like, and most of the time the strong players will still outplay you in the middlegames and endgames. You'll give them a tougher fight but you'll still lose. The third method is to devote most of your time learning super obscure openings full of traps. This method is likely to give you to positive competitive results the fastest and even scalp some higher rated players, but at some you'll hit a wall where your traps just don't work anymore and your middlegames and endgames are subpar, and then you have to start over with one of the other two approaches if you want to improve from there. Above a certain level you of course will need to be proficient in all three, but below that threshold its a question of which strategy to pursue first.
