Actually, the normal neutral NPCs dont kill you in the beginning, they just beat you to pulp and steal all your money(ore) and the weapon you had been carrying. The Only NPcs who will kill you in the beginning are in the castle like Gomez and his men. And yeah the bandits kill you. But if you want to kill an NPC in the first game you alsways have to finish them off when you have beaten them in the fight.

Gothic is one of my fav games, combat aged so badly you can't share it with everyone unless they're old, hardcore, sweaty cave nerds that played things like Crussaders of Might and Magic on PC/PSX It's like Johnny Walker's Blue Label, an elixir, un elissir. Episode 1 is the most fun where you can finish quests in anyway you perceive you want them done. You can maximize your XP gain, ore gain whichever side you want or take from the NPCs everything they have. Including their lives. I remember wiping out the entire Old Camp before proceeding to do the same with New Camp. Episode 2 and 3 kind of leaves the place almost the same except for new spawns and storyline but then it gets kind of linear RPGing.

Never have I watched better content on a channel with so few subscribers, my guess before looking at sub count was 200k, you should have seen my reaction when I saw only 2k XD You MUST keep making these videos! You have some great talent man! I laughed so much while watching :P

It was a time where game devs didn´t cared about the community too much, they just loved making games and created awesome stuff. I count Morrowind also to that time. It was hard to get into the games, but thats one aspect why I love them so much.

Wow, that was an amazing review! Really enjoyed it. One thing tho; if you played Gothic 1 back in the days once and gave up, why did you pick up the second game? ;-)

Durmin Paradox I'm actually in the middle of a Gothic 1-3 play through(there is no Gothic 4). So I'm definitely looking forward to those videos.

donpaulwalnuts Glad you like them, i'm playing G2 with NOTR plugged in right now and it's easily the hardest thing i've ever played in my entire life.. i wanted to create this retrospective because i found the whole trilogy extremely underrated.

Gothic 2 with NOTR is incredibly difficult in the early stages. I found it helpful to start the expansion quest line/area as early as possible. I think I did that part before chapter 2 if I remember correctly. The extra experience helped to ramp up my character for the rest of the game. That and you get a sword at the end of it that can take you through the rest of the game. Gothic 2 is easily one of my favorite open world RPG's. Enjoy it.

donpaulwalnuts Claw of Beliar OP! i was convinced not to use guides but the history trivia got me, i had to peak on a solution, still good DLC and i gladly sacrificed 40 hitpoint :D

*spoiler-ish* I forgot they changed the ending... in the original ending the temple of the sleeper collapses on you. Thanks to the newer ending, the beginning of Gothic 2 makes no sense.

Nice and fair review. I think it's really hard to get someone who doesn't know the Gothic games from when they were new to play them nowadays due to the somewhat outdated graphics and the 'unique' controls. However, once you get used to them, the controls in these games are actually really awesome. It's all about timing and reaction while in modern games like Skyrim you just spam the attack button 'til your enemy hits the ground. I'd really love to see a proper Gothic-II review ;D

nice review. this is my favourite game series of all time. Well gothic 1 was also like the first pc game i ever played back in 2001. Gothic 3 was my most anticipated game of all time i guess. I remember getting it day one in a store (steam and co wasnt popular that time) to play it onto my just a few weeks before custom build high end gaming pc...and it works haha :D Many people dont like gothic 3 that much but for me it was just what i expectet after playing 1 and 2. You finally got to myrtana and get to all the places you read and heard about in gothic 1 and 2 and you could explore it toally on your own. BTW: You could have also show in extremo in gothic 1. That was so awesome haha :D btw: the upcoming game "witcher 3:wild hunt" is highly influenced by the gothic series, thats what the developer themself said ;)

NICE vid, man! I always feel kinda sorry for _Pirhana Bytes_ & _Egosoft_ - they both seemed to lose their way a little, over the years which is a real shame, because you can just SEE the potential for greatness in their early products (Gothic 2 / X-3) :/
