Anirudh Viswanathan Champs are only a stopgap measure against late-game Goths, and while Goths are definitely on the back foot in Feudal Age against Britons, they do have some ways of defending like Skirmishers. Britons vs. Goths is just a tough matchup for Britons, like how Huns vs. Goths is usually tough for Goths (unless the Huns allow the Goths to get to the Imperial Age intact. Then the Huns are totally screwed.).

1Korlash Actually Huns are screwed the minute Goths get a Castle up. Check out Res22's break the meta video with the Huskarl rush. Huskarls are just bonkers in the Castle Age. They can cost effectively beat everything that is a viable unit choice in the Castle Age. 10 atk in the Castle age for a non-knight is no joke. And its not like Goths can't rush. They have a solid m@a rush being dirt cheap. If Goths can beat EVERY civ just by sheer numbers from Castle Age onwards, is it mandatory to ALWAYS rush the Goths in Feudal or hell, even dark age, even if it isnt a great strat for your civ?

Apparently the word "perfusion" is a medical term related to flowing blood, which takes its name from a french word meaning "to pour over or through," as in your blood flowing as hordes of huskarls pour over your defenses and into your base. The developers of Age of Empires definitely knew what they were doing when they picked the name for this technology.

Something should have been done about that +10 pop on FE. That bonus was probably meant for games with 75 pop, so the bonus should be changed to a percent increase, not adding a constant. Something like a 15% increase would have done the job, as it would increase 10 pop to a 75 pop game, and scales as the pop cap increases.

The designers for the Goths has sense of humour. They give us the last upgrade for the stone but we can't make walls. Although, they know we will be spamming Huskarl but we won't get the last upgrade for the gold.

The Stone is used for the Castles, every brick of stone wasted on a wall or gate is stone not spent on building castles. They want you to push with Castles and use Huskarls to take out archers and siege. So rather than an F, i will give them a D on the virtue that the stone invested is getting their money's worth in the only thing that matters: Several Castles up and running to pump out Huskarls to deal with the Siege as usual counters to Infantry like Scorpion and Hand Cannoneers are hard countered by them

As a dedicated mayan player, goths make me so sad. I've adapted by getting lightning fast at converting. Target, ctrl+click to deselect one monk from group, target next huskarl/champ, deselect another, etc. The deselected one stays on target, its the fastest way to convert hordes. Literally the *only way* to deal with a goth late game as mayan.

Your grades seems to be configured for equilibrate civilisations like the teutons or the spanish. Hey spirit! just to let you know, i'm really loving the high quality content of your videos aswell the personal touch you add to each one, making these statistical/matematical for super tryhard strats ,commonly boring videos extremely hilarious and fun to watch, i never caught myself managing to watch more than 5 minutes of a game video without getting bored unless it was a stream, much less if its a statistical/review video, but here im watching all those 10-25 min video without even realising the time flew, and besides that, i would like to thank the work you're doing for the comunity of aoe since until the releases of hd and forgotten empires we were really abandoned despite our high numbers and we didn't have a big space on youtube (as you might have realized because of the extremely large subscriber influx making your channel grow) which leads me to ask, are you feeling overwhelmed or somewhat nervous due to your ever increasing large audience, considering just a few months ago you were doing videos for a crowd of just about 100 people? Every time any raids enter my base after passing my meatstreams i just relocate my spam marker into my eco for 5 seconds. That usually takes care of things. I find that working fine as defense. Only works very well in imp, but better than F indeed.

It's strange I have been playing AoE 2 for so long but always casually. I never thought of the things that save me 1 or 2 seconds. It's strange to me to see it all so mathematically laid out, very interesting. The best thing I find with Goths is that Huskarls are a bit more expensive than champions they have that sweet range defense and a great building/archer damage.

Sorry if I'm resurrecting an old video but I used to play this game all the time on PC in college and just downloaded the console version for nostalgia and I was kinda surprised to find so much content. Goth used to be my go to back in the day and my roommates would usually play Briton or French. We had some epic battles against one another. The goth ran so the zerg could swarm.

If goths could boom massive Economies in the castle age, and we're stuck there, they would still be good. The main difference between imperial and castle age is either military or economy. Ever see a 120 villager castle age? Me neither, at that point getting to imp is chump change.

This brings back good memories. One thing you missed is that Huskarls are quite fast. I believe they are still among the fastest sword infantry in the game. That's one of the keys to a Goth offense. It's not just that you can dump masses of infantry onto the field cheaply, it's that they get into action very quickly.

what do u think about the idea of a kinda feudal rush with men at arms with goths? usually a feudal rush is made by archers or scout cavallery but the infantry is so cheap that in my opinion this should work aswell

+lennartgro i sometimes use man at arms, although like jerry its with the japanese but it would probably work better with goths. ill usually build one barracks and one archery range. man at arms and skirms is a deadly combo since they cover each others weaknesses. unfortunately, it costs a lot of food and once u go to castle they be come virtually useless since they upgrade to long swordsmen and we all know how good they are in castle, and skirms only counter archers and they are countered by every single other unit, esp knights and mangonels. still a solid strategy, just don't over-invest in those units.

lol Gothic architecture was never built by the goths. It was several centuries later. The term was an insult to the first architect to use the style but it stick. Like the term desert rats: a german insult of the Australians in WW2 that stuck and is now on banners at parade. Tory, wig in british politics were both once insults as was the term cockney in London.

+PrimordialNightmare I think so. Anyway, the important thing is that Gothic architecture was a derogatory term used by established Catholic peoples several centuries after we really saw anything of the Goths in Europe save for some small localized tribes.

Yes its was developed in France and the closest Goth region was in spain. Generally the Goths adopted the Gnostic heresy and were thus quickly overrun by islam so the jibe had very complex religious contexts.

The main thing I learned from this video is to never play the Goths at soccer. I used to never play as infantry civs and I hated the Goths because they couldn't wall up but playing with them when you get going is so much fun. Excellent vid. I also got the Goths doing your quiz which was unexpected

back when I played AOE2 I remember that population was capped at 200, when did it change?

in HD and voobly pop limit was increased, can now go up to 500 on steam HD and 1000 on voobly. But no one plays with those except in specific cases. It would lag like hell in the late game

Franks seem to be one of the few cavalry based civs that don't instantly panic when they see Goths. Pallies+TAs is a great combo. You immediately shut down halbs as an answer to the Franks.

Anirudh Viswanathan The hardest part for the Goths is taking out the Throwing Axemen cost-effectively, but if you can do that, you're golden.

I should also add that their infantry is so well coverage with huskar to counter archer/pierce, halberdiers counter calvaries and champion to balance out

Except neither of their infantry can beat Japanese champions, Aztec Jaguar Warrior etc., you need the numbers and abuse the cheaper price to spam the units, that doesn't say much about the quality of Goth infantry. I love huskarls though, gotta admit that.

I dont think there is any upgrade that can provide 100% of anything, except that which provide 100% infantry build speed of goth. No, number is not their strongest point. Their strongest point is that you can replenish your army so fast that they seems like there are no limit. You can even take your villager to set up a hidden base behind them and spam huskarl into their base

Huy Duong Percentage doesn't mean much on it's own, even though I agree it makes itself seem siginificant on first sight. I love the civ very much, so don't take it as too harsh of a criticism. Basically, my point is that their infantry still can't contest the strongest infantry civs in the game. Sure, if your economy is big enough to wear the opponent down, it's super strong. But still, if Japanese get up enough barracks, they can still replenish their army very quickly and since they get a decent trade using their champions, Goths get on a clock. I played Aztecs and Japanese against Goths and these matchups were very good, but honestly, even as Britons I tore their ass apart. Just because I went champions right away with backup of longbowmen and there was no way Goths coulda fought that. Huskarls aren't efficient enough against Champions and Goth Champions get shrekked by arrows like any other infantry, so in the end, the "biggest strenght" of Goths became their biggest weakness, as the player was too invested into infantry spam. Not saying I'd pick Britons as a counter, but I feel like goth infantry is mediocre once the spam is countered in some way. Now if you excuse me, I will go and spam a few Goth games, because despite anything I'm saying I love playing the Huskarl spam.

Huy Duong Perfusion just makes you require fewer Barracks. You can still technically match the Goth production speed, but you'll run out of resources first.

Historically, it makes a lot of sense that Gothic cavalry in this game has both the Heavy Cavalry Archer AND the Hussar as opposed to the Paladin. Gothic cavalry were historically nomadic by nature, so they were like the Huns in that they tended to prefer mobility to heavy armor and weapons on horseback.

For all of those who suffer and can't beat the Goths and their infinite Army on Imperial Age. Here's how to beat them: Kill them in Feudal and Castle Age :) Goth is extremely weak on feudal and early castle, until the get a Castle up and can field the Huskarl.

A. Anderson Goths do have a huge powerspike in Castle Age the minute they lay down that castle. Huskarl is quite a beastly castle age unit, with 10 atk and 6 PA(can be cost effectively beat knights AND trash), I 'd dare say a Huskarl rush is possible.

The gothic architecture was invented in France, so by the Franks (whose wonder is indeed a "gothic" cathedral). The first place to have a gothic cathedral was in Saint Denis, not far from Paris, a place that had been conquered by the Franks (and ruled ever since), not the Goths (who were mostly in Italy, southern France and Spain). It was named "gothic" during the 19th century, period that was quite a bit the "historical inaccuracy festival"). Surely to give it a barbarian name since it broke with the roman architecture, but yeah the term "gothic" was meant to be insulting at the beginning.
