"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" (English: God Save Emperor Francis) is an anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of Austria. The lyrics were by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749-1827), and the melody by Joseph Haydn. It is sometimes called the "Kaiserhymne" (Emperor's Hymn). Haydn's tune has since been widely employed in other contexts: in works of classical music, in Christian hymns, in alma maters, and as the tune of the "Deutschlandlied", the national anthem of Germany.

Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Lange lebe Franz, der Kaiser,
In des Glückes hellstem Glanz!
Ihm erblühen Lorbeerreiser,
Wo er geht, zum Ehrenkranz!
|: Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz! :|
Laß von seiner Fahne Spitzen
Strahlen Sieg und Fruchtbarkeit!
Laß in seinem Rate Sitzen
Weisheit, Klugheit, Redlichkeit;
Und mit Seiner Hoheit Blitzen
Schalten nur Gerechtigkeit!
|: Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz! :|
Ströme deiner Gaben Fülle
Über ihn, sein Haus und Reich!
Brich der Bosheit Macht, enthülle
Jeden Schelm- und Bubenstreich!
Dein Gesetz sei stets sein Wille,
Dieser uns Gesetzen gleich.
|: Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz! :|
Froh erleb' er seiner Lande,
Seiner Völker höchsten Flor!
Seh' sie, Eins durch Bruderbande,
Ragen allen andern vor!
Und vernehm' noch an dem Rande
Später Gruft der Enkel Chor.
|: Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!

The original version of God Save the King was written for Louis XIV in 1686. So no, the peasants of France did not say: "Don't try to ask God to save you, Louis." In fact, it was quite the opposite. God Save the King came from France, NOT Britain.

Furthermore, the original French Revolution was not even against Louis XVI. Early on, when Louis became a Constitutional Monarch, the people of France were more concerned with removing the privileges of the nobility. During such sessions, which Louis actually held after the Women's March on Versailles, the representatives of the Third Estate (which included the peasants) often cried out: "Vive Louis! Vive le Roi!" It was only after the Flight to Varennes that the people turned against the monarchy.

Mein Kaiser, I just want to say that it is absolutely hilarious that your grandson chose to style himself Franz Joseph instead of Franz II. It seems that Austria doesn't want to see itself as a continuation of the Holy Roman Empire. Still, you appear to be the better Emperor, and those who lost the majority of the Napoleonic Wars to the French deserve nothing but respect and pity. While I love Napoleon for what he did, he didn't have to destroy the HRE. He did it only because it was inevitable. Had it not been for Napoleon, the Holy Roman Empire would still have fallen, as by 1848, it was a whole new Europe.

This anthem was written for Francis II, the last Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the first Emperor of Austria. Originally composed in 1797 by Franz Joseph Haydn and Lorenz Leopold Haschka, it was written as a counter to Revolutionary France during the War of the Second Coalition. After the fall of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Francis became Emperor of Austria as Francis I. In 1826, Lorenz Leopold Haschka wrote new lyrics to fit with Francis' position as Emperor of Austria, and the 1826 lyrics, which are in this video were used until the death of the Emperor in 1835. New lyrics were composed for his son, Ferdinand, Segen Hohen Sohne Osterreichs, Unsern Kaiser Ferdinand. This was used until Ferdinand abdicated in 1848. The 1826 lyrics of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was used for Francis' grandson, Franz Joseph, from 1848 until 1854, and again from 1855 until 1867. When the Austrian Empire became Austria-Hungary in 1867, the anthem was changed to Gott erhalte, gott beschutze, and this was used as the Imperial anthem until the fall of the Empire in the aftermath of World War I. Today, this music is still used as Germany's national anthem, Das Lied der Deutschen.

I have a social networking girlfriend in St Petersburg, who is a monarchist (as am I, though). She's a lovely girl, enthusiastically in love with Russian and European history! She's crazy about the symbol of Austria, Empress Sissi, wife of Franz Joseph, so she often posts about her on social media, adopts her habits, etc. She has such beautiful hair like Sissi's, grows it below the waist and takes care of it just like the Empress did. I think this lovely anthem would be a delightful gift for her. Admittedly, it was written for another Franz.))

1797 lyrics: God save Emperor Francis, Our good Emperor Francis! Long live Francis, the Emperor, In the brightest splendor of happiness! May laurel sprigs bloom for him, As a garland of honor, wherever he goes! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! From the tips of his standards, May victory and fruitfulness shine! May upon his prudent counsel, Knowledge, wisdom, and honesty sit! And with His Majesty's lightning, May fair justice always prevail! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! May the abundance of thy gifts, Pour over him, his house, his Empire! Break the power of the wicked, Reveal every trick of rogues and knaves! May thy law always be his will, And make this like laws to us! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! May he experience the highest bloom, Of his lands and of his people! May he see them, united as brothers, Loom above all others! And may he still hear, at the very edge, Of a late tomb, his grandchildren's chorus: God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis! God save Francis, the Emperor! Our good Emperor Francis!

This song was used by not only Francis I of Austria, but also for his grandson, Franz Joseph I, until Austria became the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867. After that, a new anthem was written upon this melody: "Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze." After the Empire fell in 1918, a new verse was written for the son of the last Austrian Emperor, Otto von Habsburg (1922-2011), who returned to Austria in 1948, though not to become Emperor. Instead, Otto von Habsburg was the Representative of Austria in the EU and head of the House of Habsburg until he retired in 2007, but remained the head of the house until his death in 2011. His son, Karl von Habsburg, is the current head of the House of Habsburg and unofficial claimant to the defunct Austrian throne. In 1924, the Austrian Federal State took this anthem with the new lyrics: "Sei gesegnet ohne Ende," which was used as the anthem there until 1938, when the Anschluss occurred. In 1946, Austria took its current anthem, which had the melody written by Mozart instead of Haydn, but this melody is still used in Germany's anthem: "Das Deutschlandlied."

In your description, you have the lyrics of the 1797 version, which was the Anthem of the Holy Roman Empire. But in the video, the lyrics are of the 1826 version, which was the anthem of the Austrian Empire, not the HRE. People often confuse the two versions, but I genuinely prefer this one to the 1797 version, which I struggle to play. I used to play the piano, and I want to learn how to play this song. If there is any website that has the piano I hear in the background of this song, Dr. Ludwig, please send me the notes so that I can play this. Haydn is one of my favorite Classical Era Composers, and I wish I could play his music again.

In 1826, Lorenz Leopold Haschka wrote the lyrics in this video for Francis II that reflected his status as Emperor of Austria rather than the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Imperial lyrics are difficult to find, which is why the Austrian lyrics are more famous.

This is one of my favorite anthems, but the one thing I really hate is that everyone says this is the anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is NOT, nor has it ever been, the anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was used for both Francis II and Franz Joseph, only because the latter was the grandson of Francis II and was also named Franz. What people forget is that this anthem was used for Franz Joseph from 1848 until 1854. In 1854, new lyrics were written upon this melody, with two revisions made in 1856, and a final one in 1867. That was when, following the creation of Austria-Hungary, the anthem became Gott erhalte, gott beschutze/Unsern Kaiser, unsern Land! Gott erhalte, gott beschutze is an entirely different anthem from Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, mainly because it speaks of the land itself, and my favorite lines are; Heil Franz Josef! Heil Elisen! Segen ganzen Habsburgs Haus! These lines, which translate to; Hail Franz Joseph! Hail Elise! Bless the entire House of Habsburg! reflect the Habsburgs' tolerance of others, as Gott erhalte, gott beschutze allowed other languages to sing it. However, the fact that it does not seem to reflect Franz Joseph, which, as my favorite lines point out, is not true, people use this song as the anthem of Austria-Hungary. This song is NOT the anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it is also NOT the anthem of the Holy Roman Empire! It is the anthem of the Austrian Empire, and the Austrian Empire alone!

@@dr.ludwig One of the most hilarious things I find about this anthem, Doctor, is that some people call the Holy Roman Empire's version the anthem of the Austrian Empire, and that they call this the Holy Roman Empire's anthem. Perhaps the fact that the words ''Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, unsern guten Kaiser Franz,'' is used in both versions. However, my third-favorite version of this tune, after Gott erhalte, gott beschutze and this version is when it is used in the anthem Das Lied der Deutschen or Das Deutschlandlied.
