This beautiful painting, makes me feel hope, because I'm new in gouche, and I'm practicing on black paper, OMG, its crazy! But when I see this beautiful piece of yours, I thought, I'm not doing bad, because I start with the correct technique...and thank you for sharing this❤❤❤

Thank you very much, Jen. I have a hard time using hot press paper with watercolor. But I love it with other mediums.

I'd really love to get some of that black watercolor paper. I received a few sheets in an art subscription box and I think it'd be fun to work on some more. I love how your mushroom scene really popped on the black paper.

You just reminded me I actually got a couple of sample sheets of this paper and put it in a drawer and completely forgot about them. I really like the painting, the colors look great on this paper and it didn't seem to buckle much.

If you get the chance to try it, it's a good paper. I think it's great with gouache or acrylic. I'm not sure about watercolor, though, unless you use metallic ones. That could be something interesting to try. The hot press should work very well with colored pencils and mineral spirit.

This turned out fantastic! I've used gouache on this exact paper maaaaany times and your paint seemed to behave differently than mine does. There's a way bigger drying shift and I have to layer A LOT to get such vibrant colors. Obviously less water=more opacity, but you're probably aware how that goes with gouache. :) I use Winsor and Newton designers gouache, so quality shouldn't be the issue here. You must be doing something differently than me. Guess I'll have to rewatch the video until I figure it out..

Thank you very much. I also used (mostly) Winsor & Newton gouache for this painting so I'm not sure what the difference was. I must say that the sped up video can be deceiving as it took me a long time to paint this mushroom with the opacity that I wanted. I made sure to, like you said, add less water. It was mostly a learning experience as it was my first time using this paper.
