Gouty arthritis, or gout, is an extremely painful disease that affects the joints of the elderly, the obese, and the diabetics. Crystals of uric acid are found in these damaged joints. Why do these crystals form, and how are they linked to the excruciating pain experienced by those with gout? Find out more in this episode of Medicurio.
Informative websites to check out about gout:

Something that intrigued me when I was researching about gout was why there were even proteins that reabsorb uric acid from the urine when all it does is cause hyperuricemia. Surprisingly, everybody has a low level of uric acid in the blood, indicating that uric acid may be important to life, possibly as a natural antioxidant. However, too much of it causes gout.

I used to suffer from gout but a alternate med doctor told me drink at least 7 cups water a day and reduce my salt intake. Followed his advice and have not had any attack for nearly 10 years now.

Uric acid and All types of arthritis is curable. In India Yoga guru 'Ramdev' has cured uric acid above 20mg within one week and reversed all types of arthritis. But big pharma companies doesn't want people to know. He has all the research papers and cases on record. just type 'Ramdev on arthritis'. he has amazing herbal medicines. they cure it and you dont have to take them all life just one or two months...... thats it.

I feel like I dodged many bullets with this one. I've been on a one meal a day diet, eating about 50% protein and 50% fats for the meal. This includes eating 6 eggs, 5 pieces of bacon, and over a pound of ground beef, including half an avocado and a banana. Recently, in the past week, I've felt like I needed to drink a gallon of water at least every day. I remember hearing it sometime in the past it has many benefits, but the benefit above all for me is not having gout. Thankfully, drinking that much water every day increases the amount of water in my blood, which is most likely the reason I haven't suffered from gout with all the meat and protein intake every day. Praise Jesus Christ, thank you Lord.

Giving you all a heads up to avoid *rhubarb* at all costs if you have gout. The plant is high in oxalic acid, which is reputed to inhibit the absorption of iron and calcium and can also aggravate joint problems. I found out the hard way so I can tell all of you.

Very well done, thoughtful video. I have seen many, many on gout and Uric Acid....but the scientist in me wants to learn more than the usual Doctors videos on gout....they all seem to do cookie cutter vids. Kudos for really diving deep into this subject. For the record, I'm 51 year old male now, and have had gout episodes since mid 40s. Every male in my family has had it (I'm youngest male). Drinking is a culprit, I do believe.....overweight as well...and looking back at some of my triggers, I have to say being dehydrated is one I'm sure. Whether in Summer or Winter. Some Winters, when running the dry heat, the air inside is so dry....and I KNOW for a fact, I don't drink enough water in Winter. And in Summer, some times I over exert, or sweat tremendous, and once again, being overweight, its hard to drink enough water. Deep down, I highly suspect in my case, the leading factor is indeed dehydration...but I sure have compounding factors, and one trigger to me, is sugar, or carbs in excess....also if I had to name a specific food ...Hot Dogs or Ice cream. Forget about it. I know I'll get it, if I consume those. Anyway, off to drink me a glass of H20 and try to get more into me. Thanks again for a great video!

Damn, I'm sure people with interests in this kind of content (medicine) would come back to your videos regularly if only they would get to them (meaning if KZbin would provide the videos to a larger audience). Gout usually takes place when there is an accumulation of urate crystals in the joints. These crystals are formed when the level of uric acid increases in the blood. Uric acid is produced in the body when the purines are breakdown. These purines are mostly found in seafood, organ meat, & steak. The food items that promote a high level of uric acid are beer, alcoholic beverages, & sweetened drinks.

You are correct. Many Pacific aboriginals (Taiwanese aboriginals, Maori, Samoans, Pacific Islanders) have high rates of gout, implying a genetic predisposition within those ethnicities. Interestingly enough, these people only began to have gout after exposure to a more "Western" lifestyle (gout was virtually unknown before Europeans explored the Pacific), which points strongly towards a change in diet.

Great question! The physiological role of uric acid is thought to be as a natural antioxidant in the blood or in certain cells. It is also involved in the immune response against parasites. So why is some Uric Acid release back into the blood by the kidneys? Do we need a small amount of it?
@Medicurio
@Medicurio 6 жыл бұрын
There is still ongoing debate about the biological role of uric acid. Some scientists hypothesize that it acts as an antioxidant, which may be beneficial to remove radical oxygen species that may otherwise damage cellular components. Other papers have found links between neurodegenerative diseases and low blood uric acid, implying a possible role of uric acid to prevent neurodegeneration. Still, nobody knows for sure, but the one thing scientists do know is that extremely high levels of uric acid will be detrimental and lead to gout.

Shit I'm scared now, I watched this because my foot finger was hurt , and ate many mung bean and seafood in the past 3 days... I should drink much water and stop drinking diuretic such as coffee and tea or salt?

Thanks to the mayor for the wheelchair, my sister in law for the smartphone, my sister and niece who pay for my wifi, my loving wife for my meds. It’s been about 40 yrs that I sufferrrd from gout. Then I was diagnosed woth stage 4 kidney disease. My maintenance meds amount to about 100 $ a month. With disability and no more source of livelihood, I had to reduce the daily dose prescribed by the doctor. Now I’m desperately begging the reader to pls spare me a few dollars God bless you

@@willdatsun explanation, I'm not good at it. I started to have a gout and arthritis in my 20s, maybe because I only eat fish. Someone just told me to have sex with a man. Since I couldn't afford painkillers during that time, I have no other option. And it really worked.
