Back in "86 I had the good fportune of being asked to play autoharp and guitar with the Carter Family gals... Helen,Anita and June with her daughter Carlene at the Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa in Nashville.. My very dear friend Jack Clement produced these sessions... Roy Huskey (Bass,) Kenny Malone (percussion) and Mark Howard (guitar) make up the rest of the crew:-). iam honored to this day to have been invited to play along.... Ha! June dubbed me "Brother Maybelle) after all was said and done... Made me happy!!!:-)
I highly recommend the Netflix Documentary about the Carter Family...."The Winding Stream"...
this video was made only to test new cameras at the time... hence the quality and lack of any real editing... The audio was recorded and i believe mastered into a CD... not sure about that...

I so wish my friend, Helen Carter could have read some of these comments. She was so proud of her sister Anita’s angelic voice; so proud of June’s ability to entertain; so proud of her mother’s place in American music. But she downplayed her own contributions and called herself “the other one.” Helen, you were the one who held it all together!

Fluke told me he thought that Helen was the only one who could read music, not just shape notes. Helen was an incredible songwriter, singer, and entertainer. And Anita - I still believe Anita has the best voice in country music today.

She played guitar exactly like her mama. That is about the highest compliment I could give to a guitarist. Maybelle was amazing; Helen had the same bounce and sense of melody that was so special and unique. And she was a great singer, too. So much goodness on this video.

A daughter with the talent of mastering and playing multiple instruments (Helen). A daughter with the good sense of humor, and a great story teller (June). A daughter gifted with the voice of an angel, the Appalachian Angel (Anita Carter). Mother Maybelle Carter sure was blessed. I miss them all, I love how their sons/daughters are carrying on their family’s musical legacy! The Carter Family’s legacy and their songs will live on forever!!

The girl you all are talking about I believe is Carlene Carter, June's daughter. Even when she was performing on her own, still is BTW, she quite often performed with her mom, step dad Johnny & her aunts. Carlene has always looked like her mom but now more than ever. She's definitely a Carter Girl, which I think is the name of her latest album. (ck Amazon)

I just found this video. Im 65 started playing guitar in 1965 I was influenced by Mother Maybelle Carter. While other kids were listening to the Beatles and Stones I was listening to anything I could by Mother Maybelle her girls and the Carter family. I learned how Maybelle played and how songs were arranged for the Carter scratch. Still today 80% of what I play is something by The Carter Family. Helen Carter was a guitar player much like her mom...Love watching this footage. Thanks

This all takes me back to the 1950's. My grandad would get out his old Gibson guitar in the evening when all the farm chores were done. He, grandma and me would sit on the porch and sing these songs. He would play the Wildwood Flower and we would sing The Church in The Wildwood. Sometimes he would get out his fiddle and play a fiddle tune. He learned to play the Wildwood flower the way his dad played it before the Carters picked it up. That's how I play it now. Thanks for posting this!

Anita Carter should have been one of the biggest stars of all time. Such a tragedy that that amazing voice is only known within the relatively small folk/country scene. With decent crossover material she should have been bigger than Linda Ronstadt... a female version of the sort of success the Eagles had. I love hearing her sing but am also filled with regret that not enough other people have had that opportunity.

I agree. Even though many of us feel that way, I saw an interview with her and Helen in which she was asked why, with her talent she didn't become a big music star, etc.. She was very firm in the fact that she would have welcomed it if it had come but she just enjoyed staying local and being with and playing with her family. She was just a down to earth woman that seems more at peace with not becoming a huge star than most of her fans are. She had the looks, connections and more than enough talent. Lol, talk about humility.

Anita was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis, RA. I'm not sure what year that was. I know later on there were many shows she couldn't because of RA. I went to a Johnny Cash concert within 2 weeks after arriving. The Carter Sisters were only June and Helen. June told us Anita had rheumatoid arthritis and sometimes she didn't feel up to performing and today was one of those days. This was 1989. She died July 29, 1999, at the age of 66, a year after oldest sister Helen and 4 years before middle sister June. The drugs used to treat her RA severely damaged her pancreas, kidneys and liver. She had the most awesome, powerful voice. I fell madly in love with Johnny Cash and all the members of his show in 1969 when I tuned in his TV show to watch someone else. I was so enthralled with him that I still can't remember the name of who I tuned in the see!
