Governor Kathy Hochul’s decision to impose a congestion pricing tax on New York City, beginning in January 2025, will impose a significant financial burden, costing families and individuals who enter Manhattan nearly $200 a month. This policy, overwhelmingly opposed by Manhattan residents, threatens not only the livelihood of New Yorkers but the political future of the Democratic Party in New York. In 2020, President Biden secured the state with 61% of the vote, a margin that eroded in 2024 when Kamala Harris won by a narrower 56% to 44% against Trump. This trend underscores a growing discontent that could culminate in a shift of New York’s crucial electoral votes to the Republican Party in 2028. Unless Governor Hochul urgently calls for a referendum on this tax, she risks being remembered as the governor who handed New York to the Republicans, and with it, the presidency.
