🔺 Our Mission 🔺
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

There is nothing one can do in life that provides more emotional fulfillment than helping restore the natural beauty of this world. Actions like removing trash and/or pollution from an environment. Restoring native plants to an area once cleared for development. Returning wild animals back to their native habitats. These are just a few examples of ways to heal the collective "soul" of humankind. All these things are immensely emotionally rewarding. In a way, nothing else can really be.

I feel the same way..its hard to let go but like you said..they need the wild..i raised a squirrel from CPR..and a heating pad. Dog dropped it at feet..like please help this little guy. Had he not been so freezing cold..i never would have been able to bring him back...finger rubs and taps..blowing in face..i just kept massaging him and his chest..it worked. Amazing fun..we played a ton..from formula to food with help from others. I let him go where we lived in woods. I didn't want to let him go..but they need to try to find a mate and not mess up much of the natural cycle...he took off and ran up the corn feed tree..i pray they do well and flourish. My mom said she can't get a horse unless it's got a house with heat and air..animals are awesome. Nature makes my day.

@@GowildlifeOrg I'm with the original commenter. I am so thankful that there are folks like you who can see beyond how cute they are to what their greater purpose is. I'm too selfish. I'd want to keep them all so I could protect them from the raptors. They'd have names by the second day and I'd convince myself that their ultimate purpose is for wiggling their noses and snuggling. 😉 The entire food chain would collapse if I were in charge.

I was out grooming my front yard today and as I was cutting away some out of control ground cover I found a baby cottontail nested down in the root structure. I didn’t touch it but I’m worried that the mother won’t come back since I disturbed its habitat. Hopefully she will come back and relocate it tonight. I go out and check on it. It seemed to be uncomfortable and fidgeting around a lot earlier cause I cut away it’s covered from the direct sunlight so I covered it with some reflective solar barrier that I had in the garage cause it got a touch over 100 degrees here in Phoenix today.

Really loved this video and the discussion during feeding. We're currently rehabbing some rabbit kits (no wildlife rescuer in the area would take them) and we also have a kit who behaves very much like your first kit. She is a little piggy, but she also seeks out our attention and behaves affectionately towards us. We've only been interacting / handling them for feedings, and the other kits are behaving wild, so we're not sure why she's behaving differently. We're waiting for her to "wild up" a little more before we release her - Is there anything we can do to help her? We're concerned her instincts are not kicking in.

You will probably find that tameness corresponds directly to the weight of the adrenal glands vs total body weight. This study was done in ranched foxes. The most docile ones had the smallest adrenal glands, and the wilder ones had much bigger adrenal glands.

I appreciate too,. On the other hand I wonder if those unexperienced kids would survive in the wild even an hour? In the past, I have cared for rabbits for about 15 years. Before releasing them into the wild, we had them in as large a run as possible until they had built burrows. So they had a chance to develop from a protective "home". Wouldn't that make sense?

Same as any other cottontail. Parents don't teach them to hunt.

@@GowildlifeOrg Well, I didn't think they hunted, except in Monty Python's Holy Grail... ;) However, I didn't think bunnies were immediately independent, having heard about warrens. I didn't think they were independent that fast. Thanks for the education!

Just found baby cotton tails in the backyard there much younger than the ones on the video. Their eyes are still closed. We mowed the lawn and accidently unalive one. What do we do? If we put them back the dogs will get them and the lawn area they where on is mowed and short! 😮 what do we do? They are in a box with my daughters old blanket and some of the bunny moms hair. My husband knows how to take care of big bunnies/rabbits. But its our first time with baby bunnies cottontails. 🐰 Should we call someone who knows or just take care of them on our own and how do we take care of them? Their eyes are not open and they are the sixe of a man's whole thumb. 😮

Tender hearted Susan only wants to imagine them reproducing, not being dinner. I get it, you have to love the animals a lot to sacrifice your sleep for their feeding cycles. All spring & summer ... orphans of every kind. But I'm with Martin, it's all a beautiful dance, the cycle of life. I need to see the whole of it so the difficult parts don't overwhelm me. It serves it's purpose. It is life, it is beautiful.

I just watched a video from #VietnamVoices of the Billings Gazette - and he shared how the military tried to dump 10,000 pounds of rabbits on their 100-count unit - they refused to take all of it but we're forced to eat rabbit for several months. He said they would take 2d and 3d helpings and throw it out to get rid of the rabbits. #JesseMcMurtry , The electronics specialist, I think was the one who shared that.

It's a little awkward to save rabbit at first and then let him out to "fulfill mission". Sure, birds of prey do attack and eat them, but still, rabbit isn't born just to be their food. c",)
