I certainly agree with your comments about the training and safety aspects of the SA/DA action design. I’ve always appreciated being able to hold my thumb on the hammer while re-holstering. I own a number of striker-fired guns; my best is the HKVP9SK but even with that one I always breath a little easier when I hear it click into the holster. That is also a training issue but at the end of the day my personal preference is for SA/DA handguns either semi-auto or revolver.

@@tomyen187 Not at all and that’s obviously a personal preference. I normally carry a commander-size 1911, and by comparison, the VP9SK is really easy to carry. I have a number of micro-compacts and none of them are reliable enough for my preferences. Second after my VP9 is my Walther PPS M2…that’s about as small as I go on 9mm carry guns. I also don’t buy into the higher capacity argument so I’m unimpressed with higher capacity carry guns for civilian personal protection. If I was still in the counter insurgency business I’d take a different view.

@@bostonblunt Not using hollow point defensive ammo goes against decades of research stating that it is the best individual defensive choice in nearly all calibers. If you need to punch through windshields regularly, I'd suggest a rifle of some sort. And if you need that, you're probably SWAT or Special Forces anyhow. For regular citizens to defend against 2 and 4 legged attackers who don't carry windshields with them or shoot out the front of cars, a modern HP round is absolutely going to perform better than JHP or solid core rounds.

A number of well considered questions and answers. I've carried for sixty plus years BUT I carried my employer's weapon, most often a 1911. Second to that was (of course) .38 Special. Also, for many of us is the peace of mind of having a manual safety. I have the Beretta 92fs Inox (essentially the same gun being demonstrated in the video without the custom work) and I have trained myself to release the safety on the draw. The action to release the safety is simply to push the thumb, which is in its normal position when holding the gun, forward against the safety lever - no rotational action is necessary with the thumb, just straight forward. This is the way it was designed to be used but many owners do not do that. The safety system is part of the decocking mechanism. The Sig P series, which is also DA/SA, has a decocker, but it is a _dedicated_ decocker, which means no safety. When you press down on the Sig decocker it decocks the gun and then springs back into position and thus does what a decocker is supposed to do - drop the hammer safely, but it has no inherent safety consideration beyond that point. With the Beretta the decocker does not spring back but stays in the safe position. When in this position the Beretta has no "wall", the trigger simply travels front to back in the trigger guard limply. The gun CANNOT go off due to anything involving the trigger. The moment the decocker/safety is pushed forward the gun is immediately hot in DA mode. Now I earlier said that I take the gun off safety on the draw. In addition to this I have also trained myself to cock the hammer as I am raising the gun to acquire my sights. Now the gun is in single action mode. I am considering a hammer modification to make the cocking easier but I can accomplish this in reasonable time with the hammer which came with the gun. Frankly, I am very surprised that no one ever talks about the option of cocking the hammer in any of the videos I've watched online. Of course one does not have to be in single action to engage a threat. As Mas has already pointed out, the transition from the DA trigger pull to the SA pull is not that big of a deal, but I like the option of being able to cock the gun for SA if time permits.
@M8Military
@M8Military Ай бұрын
Cocking a hammer during draw is not recommended due to it being a complex maneuver to perform in a high stress situation. If you want a single action beretta 92 with a manual 1911 style thumb safety, buy THAT version of a 92

@@M8Military Too late. I already have the 92fs and have invested too much time in training muscle memory ~LOL~, but you are quite right - cocked and locked comes down to the same thing on a 1911 as what I described in my comment regarding the 92fs.

My wife and I are less than a month into gun ownership and we've been craming knowledge and wisdom like final exams were just a day away. Massad is our Gun Yoda, lol. Maybe I'm mistaken but it seem like not many younger folks like ourselves aren't paying as much attention to the older folks who have so much personal experience and not just theory like a lot of the younger instructors out there. We listen to everyone, but we've found that instructors like Mas have boiled their talking points down to the most important and crucial bits. They cut out a lot of the fat and flair others use to keep their audiences entertained and for us that makes the lessons much more digestible. Thank you Mas and everyone at WC.

I, too, alternate guns periodically, but, my most common carry choices these days are a full size Beretta PX4 and a HK USPc. Both are in 9MM and were purchased with DA/SA trigger systems. I recently had GrayGuns update the HK, including installing the LEM trigger. I like the concept and initial feel of the LEM, though I am in the early stages of learning to use it. I've carried a Beretta 92FS 9mm for service from 2003-2019. I've never touched the Beretta 92G 9mm, but I can say that I wasn't a fan of the 92FS. I shot 'expert' with the Beretta starting my first time handling it, but it always felt cumbersome and slow. Back in... maybe 2012, I picked up a Springfield XD in .45 and a 4" barrel. On my first day at the range, the recoil pattern absolutely shocked me! I was amazed at how the weapon smoothly returned to my aimpoint after every squeeze of the trigger. As one can imagine, it made follow-up shots very quick as I didn't need to fully re-aim my weapon, just a quick adjustment, and I was good to shoot. I read that Beretta has a better reputation than I'm used to hearing, but after carrying a Springfield XD, I can't imagine myself carrying much else (except the compact versions, of course).

I’ve transitioned to Sigs. My hands are a bit too small for a reliable grip on a G19 without a frame modification. Favorite carry gun is a P226 in 9mm w/ 18 round mags. I love the SA/DA design especially for re-holstering. And if the 1st shot needs to be precision I’ve practiced cocking the firearm after the draw with good results. Next in line is a P365XL with the original P365 for pocket carry in the summer.

Forget who did the video but he shows all the functional internal parts of each. No 'exterior safety' but a few internal ones....then just add the decocker and the DA to top it off. My EDC pistol is the Beretta PX4 STORM COMPACT CARRY in 9mm. I’m a late arrival to the DA/SA pistols (having been sold on them by Earnest Langdon) but a big fan. IMHO, if you can learn to shoot a DA/SA trigger well, you can shoot any trigger system well!

I think too many people try to slowly pull the double action when you need to steadily squeeze through. Dont try to stack the double action trying to find the wall, just squeeze through and its quite accurate with double action.

I’d be interested to hear Mas’ opinion on the CZ75. I personally find the SP-01’s double action pull to be smoother with less stacking. Doesn’t hurt that they’re just as pretty as the beretta too

@@bostonblunt he likes most CZs, he’s actually the reason I went with a P10c as my first pistol and EDC. ~2000 rounds and the only failure was a squib load(never buying blazer again lol)

@@S1deshowRob I love my p10c. It has the best trigger out of the box of all my striker-fired pistols. By far. CZ makes mostly awesome stuff. And then there's the skorpion evo

Hip, hip hooray for caliber diversity! You can like 45s and 9s. I like that thinking! I will favor my 45 and still have a 9 as a backup. It’s a great combo and makes sense. Cheers Mr Massad and keep talking caliber diversity!

Not knocking W/C because I also have their Centurion. I recently learned of LTT from this channel. I bought their Centurion LTT and the trigger is way better than the W/C which I thought would never be beat. I guess maybe just the luck of the draw. The problem I have with LTT is my RDO slide. The front sight keeps blowing off at the range. I have sent it back, but to avail it still flys off. 😡 great video sir as always.

Great video, I too change Guns way to often. My latest favorite is the Sig P365 XL. I just bought the grip frame for the newer 17 round macro with 3 magazines. The problem now is adequate holsters. For safety reason I won’t carry a striker fired gun without a well engineered holster.
