In 1985 I purchased my first handgun (A Taurus PT-92-Still have it). Shortly thereafter a good friend of mine gave me a small paperback book about the general ideas and theories regarding self-defense and lethal force. I still have that book and have re-read it several times over the years. (Along with purchasing several copies for gifts to friends.) That book is "In The Gravest Extreme" by Massad Ayoob. I can think of nothing else that has had a greater impact on my outlook as to defending myself and others. While I am absolutely opposed to any form of gun control, I could agree to that being mandatory reading prior to anyone purchasing their first firearm!

But that's if I'm not in a small room. And you're getting filled with lead even if my throat is gushing blood, you know? Knife is the easiest weapon to use in close proximity. Alot of people accidentally shoot them selves pulling a gun before shooting a attacker.

I think people are missing something in this equation, the 21 foot rule is if the attacker has a knife that is drawn vs someone who has a gun that is holstered. If your gun is unholstered and the assailants knife is drawn, the person with the handgun has the advantage.

Most people don't understand how fast or deadly any attack can be. A lot of range trained guys like to talk about what they can/can't do with a firearm, the same way academics like to talk about how real/unreal the danger a subject is in, the reality of the situation is unless you're trained to hold off you're attacker while you draw, that pistol on your hip is largely decorative, and if you're the one with the gun you're likely going to be considered the "bad guy" by a vocal majority.

As a former LEO let me add that if the Police persist in demanding a statement simply grab your chest area and tell them you are feeling a tightness and pain and need to go to the hospital NOW and want an ambulance NOW!! No Police Officer who values their job / pension will deny your going to the hospital for a possible heart attack. This buys you time to call or have someone call your attorney (IF you carry you better have an attorneys phone number) and guide you through your statement.

A couple weeks back I was attacked by a drunk. He apparently thought I was someone else and grabbed me by my throat. I lifted him off the ground and then threw him to the ground. I do carry 24/7 but I felt he was done after him hitting the ground. I maintained eye contact while walking away. I did have a second of thought of pulling my 357 magnum and shooting him in the face but I did not want to have a death on my heart. I will use deadly force if no other option is available. I pray he gets help for his alcoholism issues.

Yet another fantastic video. It really does behoove all of us who carry to realize the tremendous importance of the phrase, "With power comes responsibility." Likewise, something I also say when I'm teaching, is that with knowledge comes responsibility. I spent 22 years in the military, and one thing we were always taught was situational awareness. Quite often, there are visual clues that we can pick up on that indicate bad intentions by others. Not always, of course, but a keen eye can catch things that seem a bit off. At that point, it's best to get out of the situation immediately, if possible. When it's not possible, this triangle that Massad shares with us should be running through our minds if we find ourselves in a situation where we may have to draw our weapon. I honestly hope I never have to draw my weapon on another person, but it's ignorant to think life is a bed of roses with no people around with bad intentions. Be safe. Be observant. Be vigilant. I paid less than $200 for a legal protection insurance policy just in case I'm ever in a situation when I may need to defend myself or my loved ones. Why can't everybody insure themselves and spread the cost of defense among ourselves? After all, the chances of any one of us having to use our handguns to defend ourselves is so small, the chance will probably never happen in our lifetimes. So why not purchase an insurance policy that will pay ALL of your legal fees in the unlikely event that you will need this insurance? You won't go broke for a few hundred bucks if you buy insurance for something you should never likely need to use. IMHO of course.

Nothing in my 6 years of firearms training really prepared me for a 1974 gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects (you authored an article in a 2016 edition of American Handgunner). Our training had mostly been bulls eye w/our revolvers, and putting the empty brass in your pocket when reloading. All our range training changed after my experience that night and we began to learn to fight w/a gun, as opposed to get a good bully eye score and move on.That said, if you’re going to get formal training find an instructor that will teach you how to fight w/your gun. Mas Ayoob, or Clint Smith @ Thunder Ranch, come to mind.

Succinct, accurate and sensible, even for New Zealand where I live. Here, self defence is a bit harder to prove if you use a gun because the law says that if you are not at the range, then the gun must be locked away, unless it is under your immediate supervision 'within the curtilage of your dwelling'. The police don't like that bit because it gives us the freedom, in fact, to be armed to some extent at home, and even if one's use of a firearm is justified self defence and the court agrees, they will try to prosecute under the storage laws and take your guns and licence. They even tried it in the case of an incident in a gun shop.....that one got thrown out....

Mr. Ayoob, I have watched your channel with Wilson Combat for a long time now, and had intended to write you regarding my background with your reputation. In the early 80 s, I spent three years in College in Davenport, IA. Upon moving to North Carolina I took up shooting, and had some good teachers. I read lots of books and magazines. I came upon your regular articles in one of the top gun magazines. I was particularly impressed by your analysis of a shootout between two groups, which in conclusion you revealed as the gunfight at the OK corral. To the point, in following months I began reading your description of an officer using his weapon to defend himself from a dangerous attacker, who was trying to take his service gun, and having to shoot the attacker, and the backlash of charges leveled at this officer. Imagine my surprise, when I saw the name Off. Randy Willems of Davenport. His wife worked as manager assistant with mine, and they were friends with whom we cooked out together at times. I was shocked, but amazed by your involvement in two trials which restored his job and reputation, even though it came at a high cost for Randy. And interestingly enough, I find myself adding this part which involves myself being attacked and threatened to be killed, and in self defense, finding Myself being charged due to the assailant lying about the situation, and bizarre handling by police. Having faced life threatening assault is traumatic enough, now facing court with charges of my own. It's real, and is happening to me.

Dahell!? What was the charge? I had someone come in an open door into my foyer, the weather was great and sunny, airing out the house. I said "Hello" as I was getting to my walker. Half a head peeked, it looked like the neighborhood delinquent, I knew he would beat the shit out of me if it got hand to hand. I dialed 911, put it on speaker, stuck it in my shirt pocket, talking to them, pistol in my strong hand, moving slowly toward the foyer/him. Saw him twice more partially, before I heard him bolt. Went and shut the door, and sat down on the couch and reholstered. Bam, bam, bam, I got up and yelled it's unlocked, Deputies came right in two of them, one went around north side, one went around the south side. lol 4 deputies in total. They did ask if I was armed, yes, they asked me to take it off while they scouted the woods and up and down the street. Okay, I had a paddle holster, took the whole thing off. Filed a report stating what I knew and who I thought it was, then they left. Mind you I had spoken with one a few times, which was about the kid I thought it was. Arrest you? Again *_DAHELL?_*

Great video thanks. Glad you brought up opportunity. All states have a castle doctrine. For those who are unaware this is not direct laws concerning your city or county. It is the general rules for self defense concerning your state. So they vary widely. Red states are far more broad as you would expect. So your state says no retreat no backing down. So the guy standing 100 yards away is yelling at you only not shooting at you. You decide I don't have to back down and you shot him dead. You leave thinking I'm good. Then you are arrested and your defense attorney tells you your in trouble. You can't use castle doctrine he did not have adequate opportunity. At this point what would a reasonable person have done would also come into play. For general self defense what will help greatly is if you have trained with your weapon to the point you are competent and comfortable with it. I know ammo is so expensive and is a hard issue. When I was doing my training and competing it was very reasonable. Your weapon is a tool. Like any other tool the more comfortable you are with it the far better the outcome. You don't have to become a great shooter in one day. Shoot based on your level of skill and progress accordingly. And of course practice all the rules of gun safety at all times. Have there been accidental officer shootings because of lack of familiarity with there weapon, absolutely. Know your tool.

I learned in Universal Kempo just how fast someone can cover 15 feet with a knife in their hand. I'm a disabled veteran and my disabilities will no longer allow me to fight. Thus, I must carry. Thanks for this video - if I learned anything, it reemphasized that there's allot more to this than just carrying a gun. Once the lead leaves the barrel you can't take it back. Training is key to staying out of prison for defending yourself.

I used to read “Combat Handguns”, a publication primarily read by those in law enforcement and the like. Mr. Ayoob had an article called “Self defense and the law” included in each issue. I would purchase that magazine for that feature alone! A veritable plethora of knowledge and experience imparted. Although still in print, it no longer includes that column. This is an excellent presentation. The takeaway from the Zimmerman, Arbery and Rittenhouse cases is that meeting the bar for proper self-defense can be tricky and subject to review by a court. Even if you are correct, as Rittenhouse was, it can cost massive amounts of money to defend. If you aren't blessed with good fundraisers you are probably going down. Good advice is don't put yourself in a situation where self-defense might become necessary. Mostly the incidents where self-defense is used happens in a few seconds and there isn't time to analyze the situation to make sure you are legally covered. By reacting quickly with deadly force you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law and you will be the one going to prison and not the perp. Same is true of citizen's arrest. It is best that no one attempt a citizen's arrest -- it's just too hard to get right. This is particularly true if the perp is armed. Technically the mob chasing Rittenhouse were would-be citizen arresters. If you screw up citizen's arrest you can be criminally held for kidnap and civilly for false arrest. Just call the cops and let them handle it.

14 months ago I was doing laundry before work when I noticed a large man picking on a little lady I moved in to defuse the situation and he began to bully me I tried walking away and he followed me and started touching me he then went after the lady as she exited the establishment yelling at her and hitting her window with his fist and cursing her as she drove away he then came back at me again and I kept telling him to stop and not to come near me but he kept getting closer, drooling, and snarling, with more hate, and anger than i've ever seen before in my life. I stood there, yelling at him to go away, and when he got arms distance from me I punched him three times in his face. the man was twice my size and I was very concerned for not only my own safety, but that of others as well. I let him get up and he called the police I was charged with Mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon I plead not guilty and waited in jail for 5 months.the judge suggested that I not testify on my own behalf so I did as he suggested and did not testify they refused my character witness and used my mother without my permission or consent they instructed my mother not to say anything about the fact I've never been arrested before and that I've been a security guard for the past 7 years I was convicted of assault inflicting great bodily injury and sentenced to two years in State Prison I did 9 months and I just got out on good behavior and I still don't see why they would want to ruin my life over this when I was just trying to help. Im glad that im alive, and everyone is ok i still feel so super violated by the system. It's insane.

I became familiar with Massad Ayoob when he was writing articles about guns and shooting for Backwoods Home magazine back in the 70's. I was a different man then, with much different ideas on how and where I wanted to live. His experiences and his knowledge surpass the vast majority of Yucktube "experts" giving advise on guns and/or shooting. If he says it... you can take it to the bank. Now... I am confined to a power scooter (a BIG target for anyone wanting some "free stuff"). The ONLY recourse for me if attacked... is to shoot to disable. There is NOTHING I can or could do physically to deter an attack.

Excellent assessment of the Zimmerman case, yet I disagree with you on the point preclusion. Zimmerman was given the benefit of preclusion because he was the only person that survived the altercation. Basically the winner dictates the history. There was nothing he said immediately after the shooting that convinced me that he wasn't the agressor. Since the shooting, Zimmerman has done a really good job showing his true character to the world.

Both parties were the aggressor MJ. Essentially both parties actions can be summarised as confronting a person they believed to be a threat. The only real difference is that the physical and witness evidence is that Martin was the first to physically attack, which because it is impossible to know the preceding course of events (as they were not witnessed) means you have to conclude that Martin was the one who instigated the violence regardless of what kind of person you think Zimmerman is. Additionally, Zimmerman has spent years being vilified by half the country and the entire media apparatus. Do you not consider what kind of changes that might have to a person's personality?

@@Isadore First off, advice from a dispatcher is not legally binding. Secondarily it is okay to disobey the law depending on circumstances. It's actually a law that you have to disobey the law if you believe obeying will cause more harm than disobeying. I can't remember the term for it at the moment though.. Possibly it's "Defence via necessity" .

Great delivery Mas suggesting conflict avoidance is best. The issues of bad rulings by trial judge on 404b and other issues and fundamentally unfair trials along with unqualified defense lawyers can derail justice. Too many judges, prosecutors and even defense lawyers hate the laws and concept justifiable use of deadly force. Fair trials are elusive. Even if you win you will lose your assets, job and worse. Defense lawyers and expert witnesses cost well into or well over $100.000 at a minimum.

I worry about using Lethal Force here in Virginia , my 2 Sons are active Duty and I watch my Grandchildren quite often and I’m always on Guard with the way things are going in the States now and being Disabled and Physically Broken from Spine issues protecting my Little ones. I of course would act and react immediately without thoughts of consequences but I stay proactive so it never happens but the Laws in Virginia are tailored to the Criminals rights unlike Florida where I lived for a few years with the Castle Doctrine. I wish there was more assistance for women who are stalked. That was what made me purchase a gun, and getting thorough training, as police assistance was so limited, and burden of proof lay on me, according to my local PD, I must add that that reality seems so wrong. I do not blame them for that fact, but Domestic Violence training desperately needs to be taught and faced as the problem that it is. I was all but tortured for almost 2 years. This is a Big issue for women and often does not end well for victims as statistics show. When I finally purchased an arm to defend myself (God Forbid I ever had to). The craziness subsided. I still believe violence begets violence (I hate violence) however, when you are threatened gun ownership and corresponding responsibility of said gun is a viable option! Thank You for these educational videos as they assist in calming down those who feel threatened, and only want to have peace. Again, Thank You.
