I got the most basic gps speedometer for my old Jaguar Sovereign XJ40 when the instrument cluster died. It was only a green digital display, but it worked amazing! Then I was lucky enough to locate and buy a good working instrument cluster.

I had to fit something similar to an old Ford Ranger, as the instrument packs on those are a) fragile, and b) made of unobtanium. This was by far and away the easiest and cheapest way to sort my customer out - beyond that, he was scuppered with that vehicle, as there was no way he would get a repair. It was brilliant, right out the box, and kept that truck going for another couple of years. I think a lot of these are intended for motorbikes, hence the indicator and high-beam integrated in the instrument.

Looks awesome 😎 next on my to do list - already scratching my head on wiring up indicator light on main dash and flashing for the right and left on the speedo unit Much rather this than that blooming clip holding speedo cable in the box again ! …. These vids are great but make me keep adding to my wanted list !!!

very interesting. That's a nice upgrade. I've seen the VDO versions and they are nice but very spendy. This is a nice alternative if you need a new speedo. It is hotter up there than it is here on the gulf coast! Just had a thunderstorm and the temp dropped 15° F

My friend has on in his classic Mini works fin in fact they are ideal for classic cars as with worn parts they speedo tends to bob up and down quite a bit I have my sat nave plugged in most of the time and that gives me a digital readout of what speed I am going need to have my specs on to see it though.

Great product but surely the lighting should have white and green options so as to match the Defender's lighting? Also a clip-on black rim would be a good option for it to come with, again to ensure a decent match. I like the fact that you can set the mileage to match the old speedo.

Is it legal to have one in the UK Mike? Wasn't there some Rule in the MOT years ago that the speedo has to be working. How would they know on the rolling road. Or have I just made all this up and it's all b*ll*cks. It wouldn't be the first time.
@Jin-Ro
@Jin-Ro Жыл бұрын
No you're right, it has to be seen as working. They don't work in tunnels or over some types of steel bridges either. There's no accommodation for GPS speedo's in the MOT handbook so strictly speaking they're a Major Fail on the UK test
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations Жыл бұрын
We do not have MoT / inspection here. The only time a vehicles mileage is recorded is when it changes ownership and then if you are not sure, then you can state speedo broken
@stuartbell7078
@stuartbell7078 Жыл бұрын
One of these ought to get a car through an MoT. Regulations-wise, the backlighting must work, and that's about it. However, if you want a plausible odometer reading from test-to-test, then you need a working speedo. The only time an MoT tester would know if the speedo worked, or not, on a test, would be if he took the vehicle out for a Tapley Test on the brakes, and at that point this speedo would be fine. Some "normal" speedos will not work on rolling-roads either, as they are not driven by the ABS-controller output until the average wheel-speed is above a minimum threshold speed, always well above what these rollers are run at for brake-testing. So the biggest challenge would be to carry the original odometer reading over onto the new GPS unit, which it sounds like Mike has found in the instructions.

I think I am right in understanding the Discovery 2 as no speedo drive but averages out the 4 x ABS wheel sensors to operate the speedo - this would be interesting to see on a regular rolling road! (Knowing my luck, it would probably put the 3 amigos lights on...)
