Possibly my favourite bit of older manual's is when they show you the plans to make the special tool not just a part number for a tool that's unobtainable, hideously expensive or bothm

You are the number 1 man,if l remember when l was a war mongrel we used to tow the L5 guns at the back of the land rovers with the Salisbury diffs,l herd the Army required the diffs to be strengthened for this reason.

Nige at MegasquirtUK is the man on these diffs. He builds rover diffs for racers etc and has many upgrade bits. He is a decent bloke too 🙂

I have the last of the td5 130, and sadly have that newer rover diff in the rear. I hope it lasts!

Ashcraft has a video , loading a CV , after 500 (500 what) the cv burst . I guess under dynamic loads , such as spinning wheel suddenly get traction , the torque in the axle can be even greater. We all talk about engine and gearbox , but I think axles are such an overlooked member and it is worth a deeper investigation.

Unless I'm mistaken, the name "R380" is derived from the fact that the gearbox was designed to withstand a maximum torque of 380Nm. If that's all the gearbox was designed to withstand, it's unlikely the diff's will cope with more. I'm no expert but it seems like if somebody (in North America) is going to make the effort to stuff a big V8 into a Land Rover, it wouldn't take much extra effort to find a pair of more suitable axles to stick underneath it as well. FWIW, the guy from the "Dirt Lifestyle" youtube channel has built a monster Disco 2 and there's not much made by Land Rover left underneath it.

@@BritannicaRestorations Ah, yep. I was aware that the Salisbury axle was, basically, a Dana axle of some sort. Given how LR owners hunt for Salisbury axles, and how common Dana axles are in US pickup trucks, I wonder if there'd be any mileage in sourcing them and shipping them across to Europe? Set up some kind of "group purchase" scheme on your website (possibly just asking people to register their interest at first), tell people you'll only ship them when you've got a container-load of orders and then ship them across a couple of times a year. Gotta say, if such a service existed I'd be tempted to apply.

@@SiCreweI'd assume US axles wouldn't have an offset diff at the rear

Great vid mike ,the seals there are two types ,butyle and the brownish viton both made by corteco, butyle leaks straight out pf the box ,as for short nose difs p38 etc they never tightened the crown wheel properly so it was a bit of a lottery ,seen some 300,000 mile plus and ok. Keep up the good luck 👍

That's the thing, mechanics became more part fitters and therefore no need for the workshop manuals to contain the same detailed information as before. Just replace rather than strip and fix.

I had to rebuild my puma rear diff because some of the bolt heads had sheared off, I checked the ones that had not sheared and they were torqued to the correct setting, I had to replace the crown and pinion as a loose bolt head had chipped the gear teeth on both parts, it was a pfaf to do to get the contact patch correct but I got there, I used torque setting commonly used in engineering industry for the sizes of thread, these can be found in most good engineering information publications or an engineering workshop should be able to advise you. I realised at the time the crown wheel was thin and in pondering this for a while thought could you fit a steel backing ring and longer bolts, maybe a 10mm thick laser or waterjet cut ring to beef up the thickness, my diff is all working fine so I don't want to take it out but do you think there would be room in the housing for this? thank you for the video.

When you say, you don't want to be the man to repair the Tdici diffs. It could be a lucrative number Mike if know one knows how to do them you can charge a premium. Or am I talking b*ll*ck as usual?

well, like king mike said, setting up a diff is not a walk in the park. than he has to guarantee his work, are people willing to pay the work or just buy a used one i guess he gave it some thoughts and came to ... no, better not
