Big Wednesday was written and directed by John Milius, who was an avid surfer in his day and wanted to make the most genuine surfing movie ever made up till that point. Part of his deal was he would stop production to go out and do some surfing during filming when a great set came along. So, although dated now, it makes sense that that film had a lot of effort put into the surfing.
