Misaki Mei was to me the best character in the series. Loved her eerie vibe. Even her story was more tragic than Izumi's.

The dance scene made perfect sense. If all of my class suddenly started ignoring me i'd bring a boombox to school and blast really loud music or go dance around in the classroom. Think of all the crazy things you could do if nobody was allowed to stop you or acknowledge your existance.

I don't know why people hate that scene. My only complain is that Kouichi was too much the model Japanese student to actually do that, and only daydreamed of it. It's not absurd or out of place at all, given the circumstances.

I always watch the GR review after the anime. He was definitely quite harsh on it and that might've kept me from watching it in this case if anything. So a few things here. I personally enjoyed the anime. It kept me watching from episode to episode and setup a pretty nice setting. Definitely went from 0 to 100 around the third episode too... it's definitely a must watch for someone who's into horror anime as you don't find way too many out there. Good soundtrack overall and you really get that mystery vibe at certain points. On the down side, the characters are pretty bland and aren't really well developed, the plot is really convoluted at certain points and they don't explain it all too well, and certain things just feel out of place here and there. As he said though, the show is very easy to predict and you can pretty much figure out what's going to happen at every step though you may get the occasional moment where you absolutely couldn't see it coming. Would urge any horror fans to give it a try!

"Another" is one of my favorite series that has a place in my heart. Especially Mei Misaki. They had very nice OSTs. This series had some gore, which makes me scared to even live in that world!! Final Destination type of series if you ask me.

I really liked Another. It kept me on my toes and I loved the little plot twist towards the end. The brutal murders actually was pretty awesome but I like horror/bloody/action animes.

They kept throwing the characters out of the window and some don't even get developed enough for you to care about before they get brutally killed. Towards the end everyone started going bat shit crazy and not thinking about it rationally and what the absolute fuck is with the people towards the end looking all possessed and shit (for example the lady with the cleaver), Mei Misaki kept quiet about who it was and when she declared it towards the end Kouchi didn't look like he was frustrated or annoyed by it at all. Doesn't look like the writers thought it out very well.

Maybe I missed something but that still doesn't explain why everyone couldn't rationally think about this and why Mei Misaki was being such a bitch by keeping it a secret which cost the lives of many. Well..... Misaki's Eye let her see who the dead person was. And she knew probably for all along that it was Sakakibara's (idfk) Auntie or sister. She could of told them and then they do whatever to her and then the curse would end

DW was kinda boring, even the manga, where I read the whole story. This one would have benefited from more mystery, more ghost (not real) Misaki and more creepy deaths instead of the blood bath at the ending, for me.

I didn't expect much from this anime, and now having watched it, it really wasn't bad. It was fairly cliche as far as horror stories/scares go, but it was entertaining to watch, only 12 episodes long, and it's got all the basics (animation, voice acting, etc.) down pat. I would recommend it not to ANY anime fan, but any anime fan that likes horror will probably enjoy Another. And now I'm going to see what GR has to say about it :P

Flash Trance I've seen higurashi, but why I prefer another above it is because plot in hugurashi is unfolding too slowly for my taste and you don't even know what's going on until the second half of the series. On the other hand, Another kept me in suspense from the first episode, it gave me chills and creeps, which no other horror anime managed to draw out from me, there was absolutely no episode in a series that didn't meet my expectations... 2nd best horror anime that I've watched is Shiki and I highly recommend it, followed by Higurashi, Deadman Wonderland and Mirrai Nikki (this one is overrated but still very good)...

Stefan Petrovic Ah, I see, yah I understand where you're coming from. See, and I'm exactly the opposite, I like horror to really take it's time because I like the build-up of tension and the mystery. I have seen Shiki as well, I actually did really like that show, it had an interesting plot/characters (Megumi annoyed the crap out me though) and was actually genuinely creepy in parts. That is probably my second fav in the genre as well. I haven't seen Deadman Wonderland, I'm thinking about it though. I was worried it might be too "Shonen", which is not my thing at all...

Flash Trance Well, Deadman Wonderland has I think 12 or 13 episodes. Its plot is good, but the downside is that anime isn't finished and there won't be an anime adaptation of it in form of new seasons, so if you would like to see what happens after those 12 episodes you will have to switch to manga...

idk if it was just for a comedic anecdote but some of this stuff i find inaccurate and unfair. theres actually a very valid reason for that "random dance number" in that episode. As a matter of fact, just before that scene played i was thinking to myself the exact same thing that the main character was thinking as it happened. And i didnt find the plot to be very predictable at all. I mean, the deaths i sorta seen coming, but as for the final episode that explains it all, i found that to be completely out of left field because there was 1 rule that they never mentioned at all as a possibility, so i found it impossible to guess the "extra" based on the information given all those episodes, though i did have my suspicions. But i totally agree with everything you said about the head of countermeasures. haha i couldn't stop laughing when you asked guess how good she is at her job

The reveal was the absolute worst though. It sets itself up as a race against time and then just goes 'oh yeah, that character knew all along from the beginning. Why they never told anyone despite increasing numbers of casualties? Eh, you'll figure something out.'

Darth Kenji I know right? I can't even imagine what went through the writer's mind at that point. I takes the wrong kind of skill to take a reasonably good show, turn it on its heels and pile-drive it so hard it leaves actual disgust on the viewer's mind.

This series was pretty okay from the start, but then the last two episodes got me really pumped up and made me like this show even more. The characters, I almost hate all of them especially at episode 11, but overall, this is a pretty good anime series.

The main thing that always stuck out to me was that Misaki Mei looks extremely, almost creepily the same as Rikka Takanashi from Chunnibyo demo Koi ga Shitai. Like, I'm not kidding. Misaki is the opposite of Rikka.

*Slight Spoilers Ahead* My two cents on this Anime: For a detective like horror show it seemed to have too many smallish sized plotholes here and there to really take it seriously, like why is the school still running if this phenomenon has been going on for nearly 3 decades? Or why didnt anyone fill in the info to not talk to Misaka to the new transfer? It just doesnt seem to hold itself together in a realistic situation. Like people arent even that affected by the deaths until literally the last two episodes and kinda just shrug it off as nothing ever happened. The show also had a hard time being an actual horror show, by which I mean that it wasnt scary. Shocking yes, creepy at times also yes, but really I never felt scared for any of the characters because their threat either was nonexistent (by virtue of being an important character and thus couldnt die yet), or because their threat seemed REALLY predictable, like "oh no, hes swimming out into the water to catch a beach ball, I wonder what will happen to him" "dies" "welp, sure didnt see that one coming" Overall, I would give it a bit of a more harsher review than what GR did, but it wasnt too bad and I still enjoyed the points in the show which was for me the good parts (most noticeably the last two episodes). 6/10

I can answer the second question. The transfer student Koichi wasn't told about the curse because of many factors. When they first met him in the hospital, he was recovering from a lung surgery or something like that. Maybe thet thought that hearing about the curse might put extra mental strain on him, slowing his recovery. A second, more believable alternative reason could be that if they had told him earlier, he may not have believed it. Not only him, but very few people actually believed it. So much for the first meeting. When he started attending school, the class had already started ignoring Misaki. But this guy goes straight to talk to her on his first day (can't blame him). But by now the other students can't just tell him the matter because that would involve mentioning Misaki and thereby acknowledging her. It didn't help that the other students did not know that Misaki and Koichi had met in the elevator earlier in the hospital.

The only scene I found disturbing was the umbrella scene. After that, all shock factor was completely gone for me and the gore got more amusing each time. So when the final two episodes came around I was laughing my ass off at the moronic students throwing themselves at Misaki, only to dramatically die a few seconds after. This show was alright, but it wasn't anywhere near great.

I would say this is a good intro into gore-horror, a gateway into the rest of the genre.

VenetianTemper I completely disagree. Someone who is new to horror will most likely not be able to go through the slow pace of this anime and will most likely drop it. When I try to introduce someone to something I like to give them something that hooks them early, like lets say anime. You don't introduce someone to anime with something like Steins;gate. Even though Steins;gate is a good anime, its pacing is too slow and they will probably get bored before they actually get into the actual good part.

I have seen a lot of anime, and only few of them interest me as much as Another does. Sure the name sucks, but you can blame that on the book it was based on of the same name. Maybe one should go and watch the live action movie of Another before judging this one. The characters are all individual. Plus, why make Kouichi this amazingly smart detective who can figure out everything he wants. What is this Death Note? Are we judging him to Light Yagami? We want difference, this anime gave us that! And, in my opinion Izumi did have it pretty hard. This isn't about space and time continuum or anything like that. Its about normal people living normal lives in a normal world, only with the inconvenience of the worst killing curse since Avada Kedavra. Maybe he didn't had to be a super detective, but kinda... there should be more behinde his character. Izumi's job was to protect her classmates from the curse. We see that Koichi, Mei, Naoya and Yuya all ng with Chibiki do the maximum work of investigation. Izumi on the other hand, spends 90% of the time complaining about the situation and playing blame games. Remember when she blamed Misaki and asked her to apologise in front of everyone? Someone should've punched her in the face.

So, GRArkada , although I do respect your review, I would just like to point out some issues I had with it. I mean, you had some valid points, but... 1) You didn't go into the further parts of the story, just kinda skipped around it to avoid spoilers, and didn't actually ever get to the end result, which is understandable to avoid spoilers, but then you said the story was crap and written only to make the deaths possible without backing it up, even though it's a story driven show. It would've been fine had you described what it was you didn't like about it, or at least mentioned why you didn't like the ending instead of pretending it didn't exist. 2) You hated the characters for playing their intended roles, and the female tragic character for not having a tragic backstory, even though her tragedy happens during the story, near the end, but you can't mention that 'cause no spoilers, so you pretended it didn't exist either. I understand she wasn't the most tragic character in existence by far, and the lead could've been more involved, but it filled more of what I thought felt like the feeling of hopelessness and inability to find a proper solution to forces that can't properly be understood. 3) You pointed out that the show was trying too hard to be creepy with the dark lighting and dolls, but didn't say why that bothered you. I feel as though it's more of building atmosphere for what is to come later, as the story develops to suit it later, in that ending. 4) As far as any plot elements regarding the fact that everyone seemed incapable and how the show lies to you regarding details, I feel it's appropriate regarding the school scene and basis on rumors. It's meant to feel like you're never quite getting the full story, since rumors are never really accurate, and the in-between scenes (not regarding the dance scene, that was out of place) are in my mind an icon of the students trying to live their normal lives without focusing on the curse that they clearly can't escape. All that aside, I do really respect your reviews, but the harshness of the verdicts does leave a large contrast to the opinions of those who love shows for sentimental or personal reasons. You can't always announce that you prefer something because of raw quality, some people just naturally are attracted to some aspects. Not everything can be explained by facts.

Sure, the opening theme is more of a contrast to the series, but I think it's an enjoyable song with nice visuals during the intro itself. The amount of gore in this show was right up my alley and if any one can suggest shows like this (I've seen Higurashi and Umineko [LOL seagulls tho] twice so don't even think about it) - go for it. I will be waiting impatiently for your reply.

I really liked this show and seem to be in the minority. But the thing is, I seem to get far quicker into fictional characters, even if they aren't all that developed. The various classmates, although I can't remember a single one by name, were all pretty likable and so the greatest selling point of this show for me was the growing tension that even the tiniest misstep could spell doom for someone. Near the end of the show I couldn't even watch someone so much as move a finger without dreading lethal consequences for that person. I also liked that they took their time in revealing the mystery behind Misaki and actually leading the viewer's expectations/predictions as to her role in a wrong direction. But I agree that the show has it's problems, especially the boring main character. It just didn't bother me enough that it made the show unenjoyable to me. And yeah the opening sounded like beating a cat to death with a bagpipe.

Jarvis Lorry Well, they tried changing classrooms and that didn't work, so the curse would probably just carry over to whatever school the kids transfer to or the school built over the ashes of the old one. And didn't Misaki purposefully not look at who the dead one was until the camping trip because she didn't know that killing the dead one would break the curse? Or am I getting that wrong?

ha guess i'm also in the minority. I've tried watching Monster, Higurashi and other Animes people have recommended to be similar to this one but they all manage to fall flat. the reason i abusively hated it, was because of its plot holes and randomly wtf deaths (i mean some kids were crushed by a Chandelier, one survives and tries to walk away, guess what? A GIANT LOGE FALLS AND CRUSHES HIM!(i mean what was the point of trying to stop the curse when everyone dies anyways)) but THE BIGGEST plot hole was, if you have a school were for 26 years people continuously die with a "curse" then why haven't you burnt the school down to the ground or why haven't the police got into it, and for the kids who actually graduated from the class, they didn't try anything to close the school or really help. (its a small town, people should have known). AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST! THAT GIRL MISAKI SAW THE WOMEN DIE AT THE RIVER AND SAID NOTHING!!! AND AFTER HEARING ABOUT NEEDING TO KILL "THE GHOST" SHE SAID, GUESS WHAT NOTHING!!! UNTIL EVERYONE THEY LOVED DIED AT THE HOTEL! they should have named the show "NOTHING" instead of "ANOTHER". i rate it like a 4 or maybe even a 5 despite the good animation and music. sorry for the rant but it's true.

I really liked this show. The only problem is, as you said, it was hard to get attached to the characters (although I did really like Misaki). That dance scene you pointed out was meant as a joke; Kouichi was thinking about the fact that they could do whatever they wanted and the class would be forced to ignore them. The pacing wasn't as bad as you say, and there were even major plot twists near the end and at the very end. I also thoroughly enjoy the opening theme. I think it's so wierd that the characters are almost the same as Chunibyou's? Almost like it was made to be the polar opposite of it. The Eyepatch, the antenna hair, the boy who's around the girl with the eyepatch alot. That girl with the short cut hair in the front, the girl with the brown-ish hair who seems to act mature-ish. Chunibyou is so much more worth watching though judging by the review. It's a happy, slice of life anime but it was done by kyoto and has a 2nd season which is going along nicely. You should review the first season Arkada, would wonder what your opinion is.

IMHO, Another would've been much, much better if it were made into a 2 hours Anime Film.. Great music and animation.. This is because the anime felt too dragged put. It was like the information just kept being withheld for no sensible reason. Example, with the tape, there was absolutely no need for the tape to have gone bad before revealing the shitty secret. That's not the only one. They could've explained the incident of 26 years ago and the obvious curse of class 3 in the first 2 episodes, it was actually quite obvious at that point, but no, they had to drag it into the half way mark. Also, Misaki is too annoying. To anyone reading this, please, if such a situation were to happen in real life, PLEASE do not be like Misaki... She could've prevented the silly slaughter at the end by just opening her damn mouth. Even at the end they drag on just to make it fit in 12 episodes.. We were so conveniently hidden from the very very important 4th point that Reiko says at the start. 4.5/10

The 'Shock Value' part really got me, though. The use of the clip there was perfect and made me rewatch it at least ten different times. I've kind of been debating whether to watch this show or not, due to other anime I've been meaning to get to also. But, gee Arkada, this was just great.
