Grace Epilepsy Seizure (Cat Seizure)

Grace has one of her first seizures...

This was before she started taking daily medication 2 times per day.
I recorded this to show to the vets instead of helping immediately...
For anyone which a sick animal it's important to be patient.. it does get better in many cases with proper medication.
Update:
Grace is doing very well! We give her 1/8th of a pill two

@@jineenjellybean blanket on cats or anything with claws that retract is dangerous and its advised you make sure they're on hard flooring. It wont hurt them, mostly they would lay down. Carpet and anything soft can get the cats claws stuck and cause to dislocate or tear out

I adopted a stray that we found wandering around alone on our property, only 7 weeks old. He is now about 10 weeks and started having seizures about 3 weeks ago. We noticed immediately when we got him that he had trouble controlling his claws, drawing and retracting, but he has abnormally large feet and legs which clearly tell he will be an unusually large cat. I thought maybe his big feet was the reason for his claw problem but I now believe that he has suffered some sort of brain trauma after he lost his mother and siblings outdoors...or during. Oh god, this kills me. The vet could find nothing wrong with him other than he was severely malnourished when we found him. But he has fattened up so much and seems so incredibly happy during normal hours. The most loving and happiest kitten I’ve ever met...even compared to my perfect adult cat, Buddy. It scares me when I see him like that. I want to save him. I want him to be nothing but happy and healthy. All I can do is spoil him and keep hope that one day, they will go away, although I realize that this may be his normal for the duration of his life. We will still love him fully. It seems so unfair for this to happen to such a wonderful little spirit. We named him Beans since he was a hungry little homeless guy wandering around. But it fits him moreso for its silliness. My sweet baby...

I'm so glad that your cat is doing well.I'm sure you know by now ...but I want others to know also...in case of a seizure ...don't try to move him/ her ...just make sure the safety around & quiet & calm dark room is better than a bright room.And call your vet as supervising observing it to make sure the safety...and help you to explain that situation better.Try not to move him , unless he is in a danger hurting himself! ( for an instance ... hit any thing that could hurt him, or bite his own tongue...etc...).

Of course, you know your cat best and have to do what is best for them. My blind cat just started having seizures, and he's arthritic so he can injure himself from the violent movements, so we have to keep him safe. His other senses that help him navigate without sight are totally out of whack for hours after a seizure. Each cat is an individual, and your vet can help you figure out what is the best protocol for them. What I do with my special needs elderly cat would probably not be advised with younger cats.

This is why I want to adopt animals with epilepsy. I am epileptic but I feel like I want to adopt them because I feel like, we both can heal each other. If YOU have a pet with seizures, you would know very well that you can't just "wrap them in a blanket" or "hold them and soothe them" to make the seizures magically go away. Restraining her in ANY way will only cause more damage to her, and very likely myself. You just have to let the seizure run its course and do your best to make sure nothing sharp is nearby that could harm her if she runs into it

My cat Malcolm has similar seizures, you can see one of his at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpWofqWAodKXbrc. He was hit by a car as a kitten and started having seizures when he was about 1 year old. At first they were frequent and prolonged, but heavy twice/day doses of phenobarbital and Keppra have reduced the seizures to about once/month. We had an MRI done and it appears part of his brain never grew properly as a result of the damage that occurred when he was a kitten. We take him to a cat neurologist every six months for regular checkups and the bottom line is there’s not much we can do except make sure he gets his meds and ensure he’s in a safe area when the seizures occur and stay out of the way! Luckily he recovers in in a few minutes and is back to normal quickly. It’s now been five years since his first seizure and he’s still alive and doing fine, so there’s hope for Grace! Good luck!

Darling kitty. :-) It really is a good idea to take pics or video if you can. Take note of any unusual behavior, e.g. is your kitty hiding a lot? Kitties are masters at hiding pain. One of my senior kitties had a seizure and/or stroke for the first time on the vet's table over 2 years ago. It all started with my cat walking with a limp. Couldn't find the cause, only knew it was at minimum neurological, possibly a brain tumor because he rapidly lost weight on top of the other symptoms. Vet prescribed Prednisolone, Gabapentin (neurontin) to test neurological issue, epilepsy vs inflammation. They worked at first, but then kitty got sick from some of them. Had to give him more meds to counteract the side effects.He became terrified of me, hid, wouldn't socialize. When I did give him the meds, he just violently throw up. So, I tapered him off the meds. I am not advocating for any pet owners to stop given their furry companions medication, especially if it is helpful. I only saw how much torture it was for mine. Kitty is still sick, but he still has quality of life, more good than bad days, stopped hiding. He adores his electric blanket, first class window seat in the sun, and the fire place to soothe the pain. I just had the privilege of a snuggle session. :-) Don't know how much longer the ole man has, but I am going to keep adapting his environment to his needs. If my kitty could talk, he would quote Frank Sinatra, "...I'm doing it MY way".

She was small and playful so I recorded quite often and was lucky (or unlucky) to be recording when it happened. Was useful for the vet. He also kept it to show his assistants.

People Keep in mind that I had had this kitten for only 3 weeks (when this was recorded) and it was my first cat. I was video taping lots of stuff because they are so cute when they are small. All the medical exams and seizures becoming a common occurrence came after. I was just playing with my new kitten, watching tv, and recording it at the same time when this unfortunate surprise happened.

My cat had a seizure like that but at the time i didn’t know what it was because i never witnessed it before but it was triggered when my 1 hear old dog ran into him and all of a sudden i see my cat shaking in the pounce position meowing. Im glad i now know it was a seizure so i can watch out for it because it happened again 2 months ago.

Tips on breaking seizures; put a collar with a bell on your pet. When the seizure starts gently sit on the animals back with your knees gently pressed up against the animals sides. Firmly holds the animals head stable by the scruff behind the ears. When the animal convulses, firmly wold the animal securely in the upright position.holding the scruff on the back of the neck gently with your other hand, hold the animals head foreword. Use your voice in a gentle but commanding way. Tell your pet to stop, repeat their name and the command “stop”! Ride your pet through the duration. It will be like a rodeo of sorts and you will feel drained. Almost like you shared the seizure with your pet. The energy will partly go into you. But you have to hold on and be steadfast and don’t let them go. The seizure will be more mild and the duration will be shorter. Keeping them centered and keeping their head forward and down is the key. If the animal bites or scratches, wear gloves, long sleeves and pants.

The best thing to do is be there throughout the whole thing. Pet him or talk cause its extremely scary if he feels like no one is there (pet him afterwards) cause it can be harmful if u hold him or touch him while the seizures are happening

NEVER TOUCH ANYONE WHEN THEY ARE HAVING A SEIZURE, GIVE THEM TIME AND THEY WILL BE PERFECTLY OKAY. IF THEY HAVE BITTEN THEIR TONGUE OR WET THEMSELVES, JUST HELP THEM AFTER THEY HAVE NORMALISED.

My cat my neighbor gave it to me for free because they were moving and a couple weeks after they moved the cat had a seizure. I never thought a cat could have a seizure. I come home one day and walk in the door and the cat is foaming at the mouth and clawing all delirious so I'm scared I don't want to go near him because he might attack me so I figure I got to do something so I call 911....well they don't want to hear about a cat apparently it's only for people . So I run next door to my other neighbor not the ones that moved and ask for help and they say you need to get him to a hospital. I told them I just called 911 so I'm sure they don't want to see a cat at a hospital either. She told me no there's animal hospitals. So she took me and the cat a real life hospital just for animals. So we get the cat to the hospital and they take the cat into the back and I'm sitting in the waiting room and finally the doctor brings me into his office and he says your cat has had an epileptic seizure I asked him how can a cat have a seizure he said many different things could cause it an accident a hit on the head something they're born with many things could cause it. He told me there was some good news and bad news he said the bad news was the seizures would continually get worse and the cat only had about a %20 chance survival without any medication and the good was it's just a cat.

one of my kittens had a seizure as my dumb dog killed her. i miss the cat. she died on her 8th week of living.
