I'm a Taiwanese who grew up in Taiwan for a short period before leaving so my mandarin could be better but most mandarin lessons available are generally chinese based so finding your channel was blessing for real.

Yes! I want to learn Taiwanese mandarin for my nephew, he’s gonna be raised bilingual and his mom is from Taiwan and her family speaks NO English so she is the sole translator when they visit, plus I just want to be more apart of my sweet nephews life( he’s only 5 months old now so I have a few years. It wasn’t until I found “shou’s(?) channel that I learned that there’s a difference between Taiwanese mandarin and standard mandarin

Thank you for showing both vocabulary differences. For me I lived in Singapore so some of the Mandarin that we used here are different, although we can understand both Taiwanese and Chinese Mandarin. The examples you have used in your video, this is how we say it For Taxi we use 德士 Dé shì - we used the English pronunciation into Mandarin Hotel we say 酒店 Jiǔ diàn - idk why also, but I think it is bcoz aside of having a pub inside, they also offer entertainment and lodging service, hence the name. Here a interesting one, to reverse a car we use 'Gostan' (go stun) which is a Malay language twist of nautical phrase 'go astern'

@@GraceMandarinChinese In Singapore, for casual eatery we call it kopitiam aka 咖啡店. For hawker centres which are bigger casual eateries, we say 小贩中心. For restaurant, we say 餐馆. If some thing is authentic, we say 正中的.

This was a fun conversation and great listening practice for folks. This makes me feel better when I don't understand some Chinese Mandarin terms. 4:04 It's a testament to the dominance of 7-11 that in Asia they have become synonymous with convenience stores in a manner such as Xerox, Kleenex, and Google. However, in this case, would you still say you're going to "seven"if it's another chain such as Familymart? 8:18 I guessed incorrectly for "ba ku." I thought it'd mean to buckle (up your seatbelt)!
@GraceMandarinChinese2 ай бұрын
“Seven” can only refer to 7-11. If it's Familymart, we say “全家” instead. As for ”ba ku”, now that you mention it, it does sound a bit like "buckle“ haha

Sigh. I'm now at an intermediate B2 stage (2.5 yrs living in Taipei) where this kind of content is too easy, yet life in Taiwan is still too advanced in mandarin beyond basic conversation. The reality of language progression is such a slow burn.

Awesome collaboration. Thanks Grace and Shuo!! hehe I guessed baku correctly🤓🤓Baku is an English/Japanese loanword too, right (from bakku suru バックする)? It’s interesting because it still sounds Japanese, so hearing it in a Chinese sentence sounds unique. Are there many other loanwords from Japanese or even Hokkien that are specifically unique to Taiwanese Mandarin?
@GraceMandarinChinese2 ай бұрын
Yes, Baku is a Japanese loanword! In everyday conversation, we definitely use some Japanese loanwords and mix in some Hokkien as well. Many of the expressions I mentioned in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4rJoaFvr9RofZYsi=9C8QG1ys67XWU-8N) come from Taiwanese Hokkien:)

@@GraceMandarinChinese Yeah, I remember that video! I’ve always found loanwords interesting because they can tell a piece of history. Loanwords could have origins from dark moments in history such as colonization, but they could also have come from trade relations and other positive interactions between different people groups. Very cool😎

"mainland" would be just as vague as "Chinese" in this context. there are different mandarin accents but they aren't so different from each other that they can't be understood, unlike different chinese languages like cantonese or hakka
