About:
Today we are grading the 2024 Boston Red Sox on the first half of the 2024 MLB season. We take a look at each Red Sox player and determine if they were ELITE Red Sox players, AVERAGE Red Sox Players, or TERRIBLE Red Sox players. We also talk about how Red Sox ownership, Red Sox coaching and Red Sox front office did in the first half as well, to ultimately decide are The Boston Red Sox a good or bad baseball team. Players include, Jarren Duran, Rafael Devers, Brayan Bello, Triston Casas, Tanner Houck, Kenley Jansen, and MORE!!

Big shout out to the guys like Refsnyder, Hamilton, and Romy Gonzalez. Without those 3 there would be a lot of questions about depth right now. If we are grading in comparison to expectations, those dudes all get an A/A+. O'neill and Jansen are both pretty important pieces if this team is going to end up in the playoffs. I don't see them making a run without them, could be a tough ask even if they aren't traded. Masa: Dude is terrible and has too many defenders. Not saying he can't heat up and have a good month or 2, but he is as expensive as Story who at least is a well rounded player when he is healthy(minus the Ks). Masa can't field, run, or hit for power. In 2023 he was 50th-ish percentile in xSLG, xWOBA, hard hit%. 17th percentile in BB%. 26th of 33 DHs in xSLG. Also near the top for GIDPs. Waste of the DH spot. Imagine Schwarber still in this lineup? Almost 50 more HR since the start of last year.

@@redseatradio Hopefully Masa does heat up though, the lineup would look pretty deep if you could have him hovering around a .750+ OPS in the 6 hole. Gotta wonder if a different hitting coach could help him

I'd say Kenly is elite. Pivetta has been good and as a bench player/pinch hitter Refsnyder is elite.

The only one I would disagree with is Dalbec. He's been TERRIBLE. Regardless of the "good defense". Also if you are going to put Bello at terrible, (and he mostly was) at the very least he still has 7 wins

Dalbec at not good is laughable, Teach Romy how to handle first base more and omg he actually makes contact as well. It's time to get rid of Dalbec he can be a AAAA player elsewhere

Great take. Very fair. But I disagree on Yoshida. His batting is below league average (OPS or WAR) and he's a DH, which is really not acceptable. When he was an outfielder, he had negative defensive WAR, and it wasn't very close. If he's below average on both offense and defense, I gotta put him in not good, if not lower.

Since he hasn't really played the outfield this season I didn't really take that into consideration. It's not overall careers just this first half. I would say that's fair otherwise

Very fair and accurate ratings, the only thing I would change is Connor Wong to elite. His batting average, hit streak, and guys thrown out at second says it all. Don’t forget about that one play that was a bunt or a bunting hit that he threw the guy out at first. His second baseman skills came in handy that time. Oh, and I almost forgot how well he is at hitting with two outs

The one thing that quickly stands out to me from this excellent visual presentation is that the Red Sox already have had 44 players appear on their MLB roster ... Continuous ongoing injuries have definitely been the big contributing reason for this high inflated number ... Due to this fact I would have given Craig Breslow a "very good" grade considering the ongoing challenges he has already successfully faced by keeping this ball club competitive while well exceeding pre-season expectations ... Considering that Breslow is also in his very first season as a Head of Baseball Operations (HOBO), the Red Sox future appears to be that much brighter as he continues to build and position this team in an economically youthful way for future championship success ...

These grading videos are fun. Can’t say i have any significative disagreement with your mid-season evaluation. The question now is will there be any addition(s) to the roaster now that Casas is close to coming back ?

Can’t quibble too much with your grades. I was thinking you would give an over all grade for the team. If I grade them on an absolute scale I would say C+ to a B-, as I do think they are an above average team… but they are well below the top shelf teams. If I grade them against pre-season expectations I would grade them B+ to A-. It would be higher except they have lost too many games because of unearned runs caused by errors. I do have high confidence they will not finish last in the AL East. I have confidence that they might finish at better than 0.500… jury is still out on whether they can make into the play offs.

Good list. Only thing id switch is put wiesiert and pivetta at average. Pivetta has done whats been asked of him this year. Hes definitely peaked as a 4th or 5th starter. Weissert had a good start to the year but has been abosolute garbage as of late so to put him in good is kindof a hard sell for me

-1 OAA in the 33rd percentile, -5 defensive runs saved (avg is 0), 5 errors in 46 games that is an average of 1 error every 9 games which would put him on pace to have 18 errors on the year. There have absolutely been defensive struggles this year

I wanted to like the guy but he doesn't do the things that you want a DH to do. Low walk rate, no power, and they have 5 or more outfielders ahead of him on the depth chart(Duran, Rafaela Abreu, O'Neill, Refsnyder, Romy Gonzalez). Out of 39 primarily DHs with 400+ PAs since the start of 2023, he is 36th in BB%. But still is 7th in GIDP(all but 1 guy ahead of him have 30+ more games played) and 33rd in HRs. He makes contact a lot, but it's usually bad contact.

Come on Romy as Very Good? Really? Chase and Dom are not good players. Counting the days until they are released. Wong leads catchers in AVG and has had an All Star season definitely an Elite player. Cora is an Elite manager that fact that he's able to keep this team competitive is a masterful job.

Bernardino being elite and not being on the opening day roster says a lot….Cooper in the good category but not on the mlb roster says a lot…. Tyler Heineman bad ? With 2 at bats but is Grissom is didn’t play and he played 23 games 81 at bats ? BRUTALLY BAD …..kutter is very good 3.56era on pace for over 175 innings 175 k’s

The difference between Grissom and Heineman is that Grissom isn’t on the Sox because of injuries, where as heineman isn’t on the Red Sox because he’s not the best option

Your grades are generally similar to my feelings. Domonic Smith deserves to be in the bad range. Cam Booser deserves to be in the good range. You are overrating Tyler's and Rafy's season.
