In part 1, I look at the use of both the point and shoot iA mode and the more advanced iA+ mode which gives access to more functional controls to get the best out of this camera.
Filmed on location to show how to use the camera in a real world situation.
Examples are shot with the FZ82 in JPEG mode and edited to add contrast, saturation, sharpening and in some high ISO cases noise reduction.

Graham, thank you so much for this series. I've had my Lumix for over a year but have only used it to point-and-shoot. But now I've just retired, rather later than most. I want a hobby, but I'm a long-in-the-tooth technophobe, so I need all the help I can get. It's like learning a new language. I don't know what I would do without your videos. I cut my photographiic teeth on a box brownie.

Thank you so very much for this video series! I got this camera to use in a point and shoot mode for birding a few years ago. But every once in a while I run into some issue I can’t seem to correct and I think these videos will help tremendously. I do have a cursory knowledge of aperture/shutter speed/iso etc, but only cursory it has been decades since I used a manual 35mm (still used film then too). I really appreciate that you took the time to put these out. Thanks again!

Dear Graham, One of our neighbors has recently bought a FZ82, she has no background in photography. So I decided to give her a few general basic notions and then to add the specific caracteristics of that bridge. I started to visualise your videos and I bought your book. Thanks for your pedagogical ability, you enjoy sharing your knowledge, thanks for your generosity and the work behind. My "pupil" is progressing quickly and we have fun in discovering funny features of the camera.

Static birds are always a delight to capture - like the robin and heron in the tutorial. Birds in flight are extremely challenging for this type of came due to the focussing system used. But it's not impossible if you use burst mode to get at least a couple of images. I'll try and include that in this series.

I bought a second FZ80 and I couldn't get it to focus any better than the first one.. so I pulled the plug and sold them both. I am now looking for a good FZ70 which I had before and really liked. I was somewhat satisfied with my FZ80 until I got a Sony HX400V. The Sony has a lesser spec-sheet, but it just works better. I thank you, Graham, for all your videos and help you provide to the community. I have benefited greatly. The info you provide is basic and applicable to most other bridge cameras. Menus and some features will vary, but the techniques are the same.

Hello Graham, I never had thought or believed that the Lumix FZ series were that good for taking serious photographs. After accidentally bumping on to this channel, especially your Lumix beginner video’s, this has started it all again for me. It has given my “old” but rarely used, MINT NOS😉 DMC-FZ48 a new lease of life. A lot of advices in your lumix FZ 80-82 for beginners videos are (in my novice experience) in most cases, also applicable for older Lumix cameras to some extend, am I right? I enjoy each and every Lumix video presented by you, clear and honest advice what to do, to use, not to do, etc. my photographic skills improve day by day, thank you!

Thanks to this tutorial, which I watched many months ago when I got my camera, I learned how to use AI+ for my birding photography. I am now going to also apply the manual mode for those birds behind branches and see if I can make that work. I am so glad you addressed that issue. However, the bottom of the screen did not show in your video where you said all the settings recorded aperture speed, etc. I don't understand the terms and I can't find it on my screen. I wish I could see it somewhere.

Hey Graham, great video but you should turn off the video/image stabalization of the canon sx740 while filming on your rig. When the camera is moving the motion sensor is picking up your movement and the camera is trying to compensate for that which results in the wiggle in your footage.

I can only echo what others have said brillaint series and thank you for making them. I do have a question about this camera, I used my last bridge camera to take some shots of the Humber bridge in the fog at twilight, the dampness killed it, the camera never worked properly again. Can I use the Panasonic in damp conditions or will it go the same way.

... I've never seen a camera create so much anxiety. I have been snapping photos since the early 60's and even I have difficulty with it. It's a great photographic tool but is overly complicated. It is a 24/7 type of thing , if you don't use it , you'll lose it.

Hi Graham, I recently bought the fz82 and I really do enjoy shooting with the camera (also thanks to your great tutorials). Anyway I have a question fot you. I mostly use the camera for birdphotography, and thus use most of the times long focal lengths. Today I took some landscape shots with smaller focal lengths (20-40) and noticed the RAW files having a vignette, this occurs around the 20-25mm range. Also the RAW files are distorted (bended) up to around 40 mm. In JPEGs, however, these problems are resolved, but the image is slightly cropped. So is this normal, or is there something wrong with the camera and should I return it? I could not find anything about this online. Greetings, Rick
@GrahamHoughton12
@GrahamHoughton12 Жыл бұрын
The camera manufacturers normally provide a RAW profile for use in editing programs. This profile adjusts for vignetting, lens distortion and chromatic aberrations. The JPEG has been processed in camera using these settings and that is why you don't see the problems. So it depends what 3rd party RAW editor you are using if there is a means of switching on the RAW profile. The programs light Lightroom Photoshop ACR and affinity photo 2 do have profiles. Some open source programs like darktable and rawtherapee also include the option. So no there is nothing wrong with the camera . Don't forget if you have the RAW file in the camera you can use the Raw processing option in the replay menu to adjsut how your JPEG is produced - a very useful feature as it is non destructive to the original camera file.

Hi, thanks from Sydney. What opinion do you have on this camera's video quality ?
@GrahamHoughton12
@GrahamHoughton12 Жыл бұрын
It's a camera that doesn't like hand held shooting - the video codecs seen to give an uneasy watch as elements of the picture are changing as the camera moves and the codec hasn't caught up. On a tripod the 4K video I find is very useful and easy to pull good stills from the MP4 file if you shoot with a faster shutter speed than normally prescribed for video of twice the frame rate. I use 1/500 in manual mode.
