For many Americans, eating healthier will be a top New Year's resolution. One expert says we should start by eliminating gluten. Dr. David Perlmutter claims eating foods high in carbohydrates causes brain inflamation and can trigger neurological disorders like anxiety, depression, and ADHD. He revised and updated his best-selling 2013 book "Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers." Perlmutter joins "CBS This Morning" to offer nutrition tips.

I rarely ever comment on public videos. But I must say, shame on every single one of these anchors for being so blatantly disrespectful, and to a highly respected and accomplished doctor. I wonder what special interest paid for them to all try to make him look so bad. All of the questions were loaded and he rose above every single one. This man is only trying to help the public, yet people ignorantly can't stop to think critically for a moment. So sad!

Right??? The thing is, if you tell a Cocaine Addict to cut back on their Coke intake, they will literally punch you in the face (I recently found this out) Sugar & carbs in general are far more addictive than even Cocaine and heroin so people do start to get pretty twitchy when you tell them they gotta ditch the fix.

These people are such d*ckheads. Dr. Perlmutter was my neurologist back in 1997. I was 12 years old and in a wheelchair being told by many physicians that I would never walk again. He put me on a treatment plan, and within a weeks time, I was walking again. I have so much respect for this man. I ran into him 20 years later in the Apple store in Naples where we live and he remembered me and my mother. I had no clue he had become so well known or that he even had this book out. He’s my hero and I hope his message falls upon the right ears to help people in need!

Totally agree. These are supposed to be educated people, who clearly will not change their opinions. I gave up sugar years ago and never looked back. Like he said, the sugar industry has nothing to gain by admitting this. Cigarette's, Johnson and Johnson, Round-up, where will it end. Ultimately, I have no interest in changing anyone's opinion. I love Dr. David Perlmutter ❤️, I’m Hispanic and I grew up eating 🍽 rice, bread, beans, tortilla, lots of sugar and very little veggies ☹️, I read he’s book and it was a life changing, I’ve lost 40 pounds, I have run 5k, 10k and 15k. I have removed sugar from my life, lower lots of carbs, (I don’t eat any kind of bread 🥖) and I’m eating healthy fats, all the ones that I avoid after having my kids, which I thought those fats, like butter were the reason I gained so much weight (now I enjoy all those good fats) Thanks to Dr. Perlmutter and many others sources that I determined my self to learn from, not only I lost fat from my body but I gained a better life, and hoping also change my kids and husband health for better.

"With all due respect, most people are down on what they are not up on" -Dr. Perlmutter I think he was referring to the CBS staff as well. For individuals who were so uneducated about his book, they had a lot of pushback. I'm all for presenting the opposing arguments so he can respond, but the tone taken was really unprofessional for an unbiased news source. I expect more from you CBS. This is an incredibly serious issue.

Commander in the U.S. Navy for four years in WWII in the South Pacific. He died from Alzheimer's disease. The apple does not fall far from the tree. The fact is, the best research on the matter DOES show in fact that simple carbs and gluten have a very detrimental effect on the brain. It sucks but it's true. How much carb intake you can handle without damage pends on your genetic propensity. Get mad, kick and scream but thems the facts.

If you believe in everything in moderation that is your choice. Sugar is truly more addictive than heroin. Would you take heroin in moderation? He possesses a gentle, peaceful quality about him (especially in that most doctors do not have easy lifestyles) -- which to me is usually a sign of good health; i.e. he practices what he preaches and the visual results plus his overall deportment validate his claims. Grains break down into simple sugars which trigger inflammation. Inflammation is a precursor to a good many diseases not the least of which is cancer. Also consider Candida, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (and the long list of ramifications of each), etc. Do your homework like he has done. 1/2019

I'm not one to ever go to doctors a lot... Which obviously means that I haven't given a few issues a lot of attention. For instance insomnia and migraines, that I struggle with chronically. So last year, when I actually visited a doctor because I was having "problems with my gut" (quite ironically, come to think of it...) - I casually mentioned to him that I have always struggled with migraines and insomnia... After that I have visited a few doctors and specialists, but something that stood out to me was that no one was really interested in helping me solve my problems and yet... they prescribed to me a truck load of anti-depressants, anxiety meds and even bi-polar meds with the intention to prevent migraines and help me sleep... I found it quite strange, seeing that no-one diagnosed me with any of those conditions. I tried a few tablets of each and it made me feel worse than ever and even reduced my sleep. I have now finally reached a point where I cant help but question doctors that don't ask me about my lifestyle choices and my diet and just directly prescribe some meds... ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS ANTI-DEPS! Two years ago, I got the flu. It triggered migraines too. I took so many pills, I think it inflammed my stomach (which I now wonder if it actually came down to having my gut inflammed or unhappy). I had terrible heart burn and couldnt get or keep food in my stomach. I had no bowel movements and I kept on throwing up everything that I tried to eat. I took more pills. I was feeling worse and worse. I didn't go to a doctor though hahaha (like I said, I don't usually visit a doctor for just "anything"). I decided to add an extensive amount of fiber to my diet, to see if that will help AND THAT DID THE TRICK! I was amazed. After three weeks of meds and struggling, all I needed was some oats and dates etc etc etc haha. I was thinking about that a lot recently and decided to start looking at my food as medicine. I am listening to a lot of videos and reading a lot and I have to say... I take someone like Dr David much more serious as a Doctor, than the GPs, neurologists, brain surgeons, etc, that I visited since last year. I'm starting to realise what a big difference lifestyle changes will make and how much sugar I have actually been eating... I've started eating better a week ago and I can only thank people like Dr David, for the research that he has done and that he isn't afraid to make "shocking claims or points or facts" (however people choose to look at it..). To me, it all makes so much more sense now.

Most conventional doctors I've dealt with care NOTHING about preventing disease. They don't care about signs you're heading in the wrong direction. "Prevention", totally agree, but we're still nipping at the corners & not hitting the main target. I'm fine. I don't have thoughts of sugar (your words). When I was young, nor then. In my 20s this was something that spontaneously popped up, so I'm wondering if witchcraft had something to do w/ it. I'm serious, so, I need to force myself to be aware of my senses - I literally needed to catch myself at the very moment of even thinking about it, yeah, & that's what I did, but never was I ever walking around thinking about sugar, hanging around sugar, or manipulating my way into taking someones donut or candy from someone else, period. Now today & again, I'm surrounding by these radicals that in the past were continously invading my privacy, & carrying on this way for years, stalking me, & isolating me, manipulating me & others around me, even making me sick; & now today, they are doing the same kinds of things all over again, & being much more sophisticated in their assault. If you have been following me on Gibber, (you probably are) you would have heard my accounts of their actions many times. They are trying to draw on public opinion. They are doing everything to avoid judicial action. Why is that? These radicals are very much tied into our judicial digestive system, yet they have destroyed & altered all my personal records. So, whose side are you on? I'll believe the statistics of the juvenile judicial digestive system & not your gut feelings, & I will say that I was definitely some who was trying to be conscious about good mental & physical health. I'm very interested in knowing what these ppl falsified in my personal records. Mentors, teachers, & artists around me were getting hurt. I think that's what we should really be focusing on! I was never incarcerated, nor served a probation or a parole. When I was a teen, I should have. I made very few mistakes. There's another side to this story, and everyone is dogging it. I will say it again and again: We were all getting seriously hurt & abused as small children by these radicals, and yes they did! Never did they have good intentions towards my family. Ppl now know who my family is. It's not going away so you better think of facing the facts, & stop trying to weasel your way out.

Moreover, obsessive compulsive can be a disorder. I think the word "disorder" is a medical term that describes various types of peculiar psychological conditions. Very often, these ppl make it obvious - if not, then certainly suspicious - to the ppl around them that they are acting or behaving inappropriately. Felony, is straight out criminal action, where the crime is covered up, & even the cover-ups become even more felonious. Maybe we should be studying & reevaluating the criminal code & consider disorders as medical & not criminal. As a teen I was pursuing the same kinds of interests as the other teens around me, but in my case, I was damaged as a toddler & as a child (ref. I America). Some of these kids started breaking into cars and stealing car stereos. They were even talking about breaking into houses. I said no way bc I had already been caught steeling cigarettes when I was around 11 & caught again stealing candy when I was 12. I was punished for it & learned my lesson. As an adult, I came to value the importance of being honest - I think we all go thru this experience. These kids that I grew up with, as far as I know, never got caught. I do know that they stopped there activity, so I'm I wonder if someone tipped their parents off. Intelligence was always listening in on my family & could have likely picked up on the conversations I was having with these kids. Some of them went on to having very successful lives. Even though they dropped out of school early, they did very well for themselves. They married early, and became auntypreneurs. They had a lot of positive support around them, and I think that made all the difference. It gave them good self-esteem, and they felt very much included in the community. On the other hand, for me, I was constantly getting assaulted for almost 15 years. It isolated me. Isolation & feeling alienated for quite some time - even in childhood, can't be healthy for anyone. I am very proud of what I was able to overcome and accomplish. I had only myself to figure it out. I thank God, that I had a loving family - my mother, brothers and sister, and our dad - we talked, and tried to encourage and help each other, and we were brought up in faith in God, and that was a good. Things could have ended up much worse if my family didn't have faith, and compassion for one another.

No, Gayle. Diet is key. Without a diet that is low in carbs and simple sugars, exercise alone can't reverse diseases like Alzheimer's and Type 2 diabetes.

The doctor said nothing new. If your body cannot handle donuts, wheat or sugar then choose something else. Many people can burn calories very easily and they enjoy the tasty calories/fuel. Most people don't work hard or exercise the required amount for their body type.
