Kanye created a bit of a stir with his post Grammy comments about Beyonce and Beck. Simply put, Kanye felt that Beck did not have album of the year and that the Grammy should have gone to Beyonce. During a post Grammy interview, Kanye commented on how the Grammy's need to take them seriously as artists and that they are not "playing with them" anymore. Is Kanye right? And if so, what does hip hop need to do to earn their respect back? Take a listen as we give our thoughts on Kanye's comments plus Sophie chimes in with her own thoughts about Beyonce and why she felt she deserved the Album of the Year award.

This was cut out of the video, but am I the only one that thinks that, perhaps, Kanye is secretly in love with Beyonce? This is an honest question. twelve kyle seemed to be the only other person at the table who had ever given this any thought. Kanye doesn't seem to do this kinda shit unless it has something to do with Beyonce. He doesn't even seem to defend his own wife like that. Just a thought...

I hadn't though of him being in love with Beyonce. Maybe he is trying to pick the top artists to prove his point as far as awards go. You mentioned in the video that the academy votes on who should get the award. I heard last year, I think macklamore said it on a hot 97 interview after kendrick was snubbed (check it out) and i heard it in another interview with bishop nehru on vlad tv, that all the artists get to vote in all the categories. So if I'm not that into hiphop, but I can vote on the album of the year, it boils down to a popularity contest. So from what i heard there is not a group of distinguished music critics making theses decisions, its other artists. What are your thoughts?
@mykectown
@mykectown 9 жыл бұрын
MYSTERIOUSasLOVE Nah, the break down of how this works (for the most part) is public knowledge on the internet. It all comes down to how the academy members vote. It's not necessarily just all the artists. People can pay to be on the committee board. Supposedly they encourage you to vote according to the genres you know...but who knows if people do that. But, as with any organization, in the end I'm sure there are politics involved. I think if it were simply a popularity contest there's no way in hell Beck woulda won. It would have easily gone to Sam Smith or Beyonce.

Myke is absolutely fucking spot on when he said that Beyonce fans are just trying to grasp at anything they can. Nearly every argument that has been brought up has been ridiculous. They were absolutely made up when Kanye made the artistry argument and had no problem with that at all, but as soon as people brought up that Beck writes his own music, produces his own shit and plays over 15 instruments, they started making the argument that '' Well, that shouldn't matter, it's over the album sales and stuff '' So ALL OF A SUDDEN, they were AGAINST bringing up '' artistry '' even though they were using that argument when Kanye made it. It's fucking so childish. It was KANYE who made that argument, that '' we should respect artistry '' no one else did, so stop it. Also, that '' They kept her on all night but didn't give her a Grammy is '' is completely contradicting to what they're saying. So they hate the politics and how the academy hands out their awards, yet they think that BY DEFAULT of Beyonce performing, she should win best album of the year ? Not because of the actual content of the album ? Yeah, because that would clean up the entire academy award and how it's run wouldn't it ? What happened to album sales being the main factor ? Hahaha, it's just crazy how annoyed these people are at the fact she didn't win an award that she's already won 5 fucking times.

Beyonce's album wasn't even that good, I don't think either of them had the best mainstream album of the year but if I had to choose one, it'd be Beck's. Most people just get riled up because they only listen to Hip-Hop and R&B and never even listened to Beck before and not knowing who someone is equals being inferior in some people's eyes. Beyonce's album was mainly about sex, not all but mainly. The production and atmosphere of the album was pretty interesting thanks to Boots (who produced most of the album), but overall.. meh, I don't think you can make a strong argument in favor of Beyonce if you heard both projects.

To be frank I didn't like Beyonce's album or Beck's album. I'm a fairly big fan of both artist. I love the singer/songwriter genre. But his album was a little too slow and melodramatic IMO. Bey's album was ok I guess. Not AOTY worthy. Overall it was a pretty weak field. I don't respect the Grammys for disrespecting Hip Hop for countless years. But that's another story

I personally believe beck deserve his win. The thing with Beck's latest album is that it's a sequel to one of his previous albums. Then once you start getting the knowledge of the album then you'll see why it's a good album. But I don't know what's good to you so don't take my word for it. Also, Beyoncé latest album was bullshit and overrated and the fact that she got an AOTY nom but not Kanye's MBDTF is REALLY bullshit

I think Kanye had the right message but picked the absolutely wrong time and battle to do so. If an artist like Ed Sheerhan or Sam Smith won album of the year over veterans like Pharrell Beck or Beyonce then Kanye's battle would be 100% validated. Kanye ran on stage and clowned Beck without even listening to his album (he admitted this on the Breakfast Club) was the true sign of disrespect toward artistry. Beck is an established artist who probably had more deserving albums that couldve won Best Album in the past. It seemed like a sympathy win to Beck IMO Beyonce's album was better and had more of an impact at the time then Beck's did and I agree with Kanye on that matter but he picked the wrong battle with the wrong artist.

***** well I enjoy Death Grips but they don't make radio music which usually tends to be more rhythmic and melodic. You have to have that commerical "gloss" to even get any type of major rotation. That's the game they play, oh and major marketing and publicity so that the awareness to raido's audience is there too. Plus don't forget some side payola and or come to our annual show and will pay you for an appearance. Most of that shit is simply politics and money, ain't shit to do with talent. Major label's can do this, although that ability means nothing since no one really moving major units like that. Anything that is left of field of that rhythmic sound is not even relevant in radio's eyes.

Sophie, you are missing a major point in your argument that album sales determine who wins at the grammies. If it were based solely on album sales, then Taylor Swift's "1989" would have won far and away with basically zero competition. Her album reached platinum status, the only album of the whole year to do so, regardless of genre.

@@thomasnelson5758 @John Andrews Exactly. The "urban" category they made up just to file black art under an 'other' category instead of letting it compete with just regular album of the year sucks. They did choose to rename it to something more PC but the category still exists and its function was more offensive than the title, so they didn't fix the issue.

Grammys are usually given out based on popularity. It doesn't mean that the Grammys said Beyoncé's album is bad (although I'm personally not crazy about it). It just means they thought Beck's album had more pop appeal than Beyoncé's. (Although I didn't even know Beck was making new music.)

People talk about how unique Beyonce's album is because each song has its own video, and while its pretty interesting, Death Grips dropped an album in the same fashion a month earlier, and Esperanza Spalding released Radio Music Society three years ago and if you got the special release, she also had every song accompanied with a music video. I listened to Beyonce's new album. It wasn't quite as good as her previous albums, which I think got consistently better each time. And as far as who deserved to win the Grammy's; I didn't listen to Beck's album, but I look up how Grammy's he and Beyonce won. Beyonce has twenty Grammy's. Beck has five. I think Kanye can let this one slide without chiming in like a fucking idiot.

I've always considered the Grammy's to be MOSTLY a popularity contest rather than a musical contest. As part of the metal scene, it's kind of a joke to us. The Metal grammy nominations are basically the same pool of artists every year, and they never really consider many artists that deserve to be nominated for musical reasons. I feel like hip-hop is the same way to some degree. In the end, who cares who wins a musicians contest if the contest isn't considering their music?

I did some research about who actually votes on a Grammy mainly because I am a fan of Kanye and I don't think the guy is just a lunatic I assume that maybe his rants are coming from a real place. What I found on www.grammypro.com/join is that a Grammy is nominated and voted for by the more or less anyone involved in the making of music for the music industry. So really from my understanding Kanye's rants are directed at the people in the audience because most of them voted for the winners more than likely. The criteria to be a recording academy member are: release an album online, release an album in stores or have been nominated for an album in the past five years. I was surprised because I really believed that the people that nominated and voted for a someone to receive a Grammy were a bunch of rich white record Exec's. That may still be the case based on who approves members however it may also be propaganda to keep people who can vote from applying to become a member or to stop those who are members from even voting. I really only considered who actually voted on a Grammy because I saw a DJ Vlad interview with DJ Premier and Royce Da 5'9. In the interview DJ Premier said he was actually able to vote, this year. So I think there maybe a lot of suspect stuff going on behind the scenes. The music business is as slimy as it gets. Sorry this was such a long comment but I really respect what you guys are doing and hope that you will take a look at the link maybe give you a different perspective if you did not already know. Peace

I guess to respond to Myke: Your sitting around and arguing BECAUSE your on this channel. I know your on here on KZbin becuase your care about hiphop, and hanging out with your boys, and discussing the culture.... but we all (the viewers/subscribers) consider your opinions noteworthy, as well as the rest of the team. We watch to see you all discuss hiphop, and in recent times music culture as a whole. Can't really hop on these videos and be like "Maaaaaaaaan, why are we discussing this?" Most of music culture is talking about this, you all are involved in that discourse too. AOTY is just that, AN ALBUM OF THE YEAR, one that connects with culture and lasts and makes an impact for that year. GRAMMYS take it on themselves to list that out and put it out on display. They make a list, and present the "best albums" of the year. I think what Ye has a problem with is that they don't get it right. And, I think we all know that. But, he is saying "Look, the Grammys have a position, and they SHOULD get it right". Beyonce's album was everywhere. Broke the internet, all that. Sold a lot, was being played everywhere. But, at the base of everything people connected to the MUSIC. Drunk In Love, Parition, etc, etc Mostly everyone I know (and judging by the response of the Internet after the Grammys) connected to that album. THAT'S why it should have won, opposed to a Beck. Sure, Beck's can stand up to it, but there is no way I'm gonna believe that album was not THE most important album to drop for the culture. Music wise too.

At the end of the day, these award ceremonies count for nought. I bet people would be hard pushed to remember who won the same award two years ago. I'm with Myke's point though, Kanye was trying to make it a hip-hop thing (even though Beyonce is pop) when it was a general award. Eminem, Outkast and Kanye himself have won plenty of awards since the mid-2000s, so why is he trying to stir up that sentiment now? Also, hip-hop is probably one of - if not - thee most popular types of music these days. Hip-hop seems to get taken more into consideration with these ceremonies than say metal or jazz. It's so obnoxious for Kanye to whine about that.

Here's an idea, and I love listening to you guys, so it's not directed at you. Since everyone keeps talking about artistry and what artistry is, how about asking some real artists their opinion on the matter? Obv there's no right or wrong answer of what true artistry is, but it'd sure as he'll make a cohesive argument worth listening to, that could possibly end this ridiculous debate, or maybe it'd just show how absurd this convo really is. Again no shade toward DEHH, just a general statement

I could go on and on, but they pretty much said it in regard to hip-hop. I actually would rather watch the performances than to see who actually won because every award show not just the grammy's is becoming predictable it isnt even funny anymore. That is exactly why I dont watch them, BET awards especially because I know beyonce's going to win something and she probably wouldnt have done anything that year. I would even go as far as saying her album wasn't great compared to the other artist or her song wasn't great compared to the other artist, but because its a certain artist with status they get it anyway.
@turnt0ff
@turnt0ff 9 жыл бұрын
If you're solely talking about artistry, of course music videos can be an extension of your art. Just look at Death Grips' music vids for Government Plates. That whole album feels incomplete without the vids. The visuals can enhance your art. But it cannot be used as a catalyst for winning an album of the year Grammy award, which i don't give two shits about. i think that's what Feefo was trying to get at with music vids but that's not the conversation they were having. Music vids can also be used for marketing purposes too, however. Most controversial vids are used to garner attention.

See I call complete BULLSHIT ON WHAT MYKES SAYING.Here's why. When it came down to the Hip Hop Category @ the Grammys he said he thought Iggy would have because of the fact that she was the biggest selling artist of last year.And he also said that people who vote for the Grammys aren't thinking about criticizing the album but more so about how many singles it sold, or albums, or the number of spins it has. And he also said that the Grammys are about politics and that Jay Z would know about the politics(So I figure if he knows so does his wife who is just as powerful). But then Mykes does a complete 180 when it comes to the AND SAYS THE SAME ARGUMENT HE HAD JUST MADE 5 MINS BEFORE FOR IGGY DOESN'T MAKE ALOT OF SENSE IN THE CONTEXT TO BEYONCE NOT WINNING AND SOUNDS CRAZY. THAT'S THE SHIT THE MAKES NO SENSE TO ME.

Before he assumed that's why Iggy would win but now he's confused ,that's why he's questioning what it takes to qualify for the Grammys. Personally, I think fuck the Grammys. You can't win at art
@felicianosegundojr.4062

Myke said he was surprised that Iggy didn't win based off her popularity, not that she should have won based off her popularity, There is no 180 on that. However, if someone as powerful as Jay-Z can't use some sort of influence on whether or not his wife gets that award, then maybe he's not so powerful after all. I mean, he did lose to Mr. Independent Macklemore last year, so there's that. Magna Carta (went platinum in about a week) lost to Mack & Ryan's The Heist (took 10 months to go platinum).

Myke, I'm curious. If you were the head of the voting committee of the Grammy awards, what would be YOUR criteria for those who should win awards like Album of the Year? I understand that you said the essence and merit of the album should be first and foremost but I find it hard to believe tangible evidence such as sales, marketing, etc. should not be included in the process at all. At the end of the day, this is all opinionated; what may be great to your ears may not be great to others. Tangible evidence should be used to buffer and distinguish them, BUT it shouldn't be the end-all-be-all. Prestigious awards such as Album of the Year should not only value the actual album in its aesthetic value but how it impacted certain demographics around the globe in some form of fashion. The Grammys may never get it right but I wonder if you think there is another way of doing this that would be fair AND realistic.

I agree with you, quality should be the most defining qualification however, do you believe that the quality of an album should be the ONLY criteria? Granted, I'm not saying sales should be a major factor but when I think of Album of the Year I think of an album that should be able to hold down the fort on many aspects of what an impactful album should be. For example, The Chronic/Me Against the World/Ready to Die/Illmatic was iconic not just because of quality but because it was a game-changer/pioneering of that era and it paved ways for many albums to come. Not to say sales indicates those things but marketing/popularity in the hip hop community (hell the black community) at those times should had earned those albums Grammys.

To Mike, I understand what you're saying about marketing. But the way in which an album is released does impact the way that we, as listeners, experience the album. If an artist releases 3 singles before the album comes out, and the album is only 12 songs long, that negatively impacts the experience of listening to the album upon release. For Beyonce specifically, the fact that she released the entire album and a video for each song, with no build up created a unique listening & viewing experience. Does that necessarily make her album better or worse than anyone else's? No, but I don't think it's fair to say that videos and the way an album is released should be viewed as completely tangential to the listening experience.
@mykectown
@mykectown 9 жыл бұрын
***** Videos are marketing. That's all. They're used to market the album. The way an artist releases singles and videos should have no impact whatsoever on whether or not an album can be deemed as better than another. That was the point. It does matter if it changes the way a fan feels while listening to the album. If that fan were a judge, he/she would have to attempt to remove that factor, otherwise their opinion would be a bit tainted.
@gavinmillar
@gavinmillar 9 жыл бұрын
Myke C-Town You really don't think a music video can be art? I definitely don't think they matter in terms of which album is better, but you can't deny that some music videos are incredible pieces of art. Thing is, they're usually someone else's art. It just feels like you're writing every video off as a mere commercial, which seems a bit dismissive to me.

@mykectown

Gavin Millar You have the same issue as the other guy in here that I was arguing with. Not really understanding what marketing is. So I'll put this here: "Marketing is communicating the value of a product, service or brand to customers, for the purpose of promoting or selling that product, service, or brand." Too many of you guys think that marketing is just a means of making money and that value always equates to dollar bills. That's not true. If your brand is that you're a free thinker then videos are an extension of that. The value of your brand is in convincing the world that you're a free thinker. The music video would be a way to further portray that. It also gets you to become more interested in the actual product...which is the music. Now, can a music video be art? Yes. But it is still marketing for the brand (you) or the product (your music). When I said "music videos are marketing and that's all" how is that saying it can't be art or artistic? Art can easily be a form of marketing. It's not always just a commercial. But I sometimes wish people would simply ask what I mean versus accusing me of actually saying something I never said. But hopefully you're clear now.

I'm curious about how Myke finds it stupid that people get so emotionally invested about the grammys, yet he is the most emotional about this topuc in this video. I can understand him watching the show for amusing purposes, but i also call bs on that because other than kanye's antics, there really isn't anything funny about the award show. I really dp enjoy Myke, however he seems to be acting very snobbish about not caring for award shows because of the way he claimd to not care about the winners who weren't announced during the airing of the show. I am glad that kendrick lamar won, and even if iggy won i would've been happy for her even though i am not a fan of her music. When it comes down to it, i recognize the grammys and most music award shows are basically like a prom for mainstream artists, but i must admit that ny heart went to kendrick lamar when i heard he won two grammys. As big of a fan Myke is of certain artists, like maybe a run the jewels, if the grammys decided to recognize that group i highly doubt that myke would be as happy if el p and killer mike won a grammy, as well as if iggy won a grammy for the same award. I am not saying he'd be angry if rtj would lose, but he musr admit that he would be a little happier if rtj did win. That being said i don't think myke is as honest with himself in this convo as he should be, and almost seems that he is trying to convince himself that the grammys are a joke. Just my thoughts though, i still love you guys.
