That certainly was a ride and a half and I see you met Shrek! 😀 The tree you saw is a Canarian pine that was badly scorched in a wildfire. They are more fire resistant than regular pine trees and and often come back to life after a yearr or so sprouting random groth on otherwise blackened branches.

Looking for winter cycling, I spent 3x weeks in GC January. Las Palmas, excellent roads in the North but I also got down too Mogan, Maspalomas, and the west, Agaete and San Nicholas. What a wonderful island to explore, can’t wait until January 2024 !

I love your videos! You asked about the strange bushes in the trees (@6:45). I would have to get a closer look but I believe that's Mistletoe. Sadly Mistletoe, while interesting and pretty, it's a parasite and eventually kills the host tree it lives on. Enjoy your riding and I'm glad you fixed your free-hub problems. It takes a while to trust your bike again after a free-hub problem (As you said).

The contrast reminds me of hiking Juniper Canyon in Big Bend. The contrast between between the landscapes (high desert and forest) is fascinating there too. Especially where they overlap.

Can totally relate to not trusting my bike after an incident. I bought a MTB a couple of years ago from a 2nd hand bike shop. The guy was lovely, but not a great mechanic. When I tried the bike, I loved it, but there was an issue with the gears slipping on the cassette. I mentioned it to him and he took it into the workshop, brought it out again and said it was fine. After about a week of riding, thankfully only a few miles from home, the mech hanger ripped off throwing the jockey wheels into my spokes, breaking a couple. Called the mechanic who came and picked me up and “fixed” it again, but it still wasn’t right, so took it to my LBS, who said the mech hanger was bent. They sorted it properly, but I totally lost my confidence in it and sold the bike soon afterwards.

I know that "fear" and lack of trust in the bike you talk about, it makes it so much harder until you get that trust back because you constantly tense up waiting for it to happen again. I had exact same issue as you just a few weeks ago, it does get to you! Beautiful looking ride!!

This was a really excellent video … ta very much. I really enjoy being able to head out my front door and ride in the country too! Speaking of which, my forecast is heading towards double digit temps this week so I’ll finally be getting the bike off the turbo! PS: what helmet are you using? I have a Giro but it’s not MIPS and am thinking of upgrading.

At times I’ll stretch a 2 hour ride to 4hours. Stopping to take photos or explore some interesting place. I’ll get anxious, almost panic when I walk then turn to see my bike in the distance looking so small.

Excellent bide ride because the scenery makes it all that much more spectacular. It is a gift of Mother Nature when the landscape overwhelmes the mood obtained by strenuous pedaling. Like a full plate of nutritious food, one gets a little of everything right at the moment. The past is gone, the future isn't here yet, just now do we enjoy what we do. A bike ride? Yes, nothing quite like it. 🚲🚲

Glad indeed to see you smiling again; as for the "fear" left from the fall, my advice is to reproduce the "mechanical" you had in some training sessions, and induce your body to react instantly to that (is that what they call muscular memory?), so to avoid falls, and also psychological fear will be neutralized. And yes, if we use pro-level equipment, cogs that are light and slim, chains the same, let's remember too that the pros have staffs that make ajustment, maintenance, replacement of the gear all time long...

Have you considered doing the full tour around the island? I did it a couple of times and it's an epic ride, always clockwise to benefit from the tailwind on the SE part of the island. Better waiting for less windy days as it can get tricky and dangerous on the Anden Verde road towards Agaete, the descent to El Risco is as fun as it gets. Thought that road was still closed but it was reopened on 2022 apparently, don't miss the chance if you can. It's an 9+ hour ride though, for me at least! Are you running rim or disc brakes?, what gearing are you using?
