I’m sorry, I don’t remember the game #, but I know it was in L.A. That case seemed even more egregious than this, but the umpires ruled in New York’s favor. Ultimately didn’t matter, because the Dodgers won the series.

I was taught since high school that on a double play if the runner coming to second doesn’t slide to just let it rip as normal, which will crack them around the chin/ chest area, because that’s the natural aiming point. I was a certified high school umpire, now retired; this MLB crew got it wrong, sadly. Batter/runner can be in fair territory there, but not outside the 3 foot baseline. Being out of the base path, whether the batter makes a specific move to swat at the ball or something such in that case is moot. It was interference. If batter was in legal base path, then umpire would be correct. I didn't watch this game live, but I have not seen if the crew looked at a replay or not. They should have, I think.

I doubt it’ll be changed. Because the base path rule for first base comes in two parts. Establishing your base path to start which is on the grass. The second part to that is half way down the line he has to get to the outside of the foul line. So because the play happened in the first 45ft of Grandal running it is legal. Them changing the base path rule will inhibit righties from ever running on the grass. Putting them at a disadvantage and potentially cause them to be out instantly because they’d have to in theory step on home plate to get to that outer half right away.

I think the big thing to note is it looks like he established that base path before the ball was thrown. Since he established that he was running down the grass and didn't move into the way of a ball that was already thrown he is entitled to that line.

Yeah, because his coaches taught him to do this in a situation like this. In baseball, you drill things over and over to the point where when a ball is hit, you know EXACTLY what you are going to do in virtually every circumstance. You are in a state of infinite actions at once, depending on where and how the ball is hit determines what your action ends up being. So if you think that he didn't have a plan to intentionally run into the path of the ball as soon as it was hit(he CAN see the trajectory of the ball off the bat, and he can use where he is standing as a point of reference), you're not only delusional, you just know absolutely nothing about baseball. He clearly takes steps to the left FOR NO REASON as soon as the ball is hit. Because he knows that will legally put him in the path of the play.

I've done some umpiring over the years. The whole running out of the base "path" thing is a tricky call to make. Every coach wants it called when they're on defense. I like that you mentioned that a tag has to be "attempted on the runner". Basically after having established his path, deviating(3 feet) from that path once a tag is attempted could be considered running out of the base path. Now what is a "tag attempt"? That's another ball of wax. Some judgment and good common sense by the umpire is required for the running out the base path call to be made. As for making a "travesty of the game", I've heard of Runners running straight for right field from first on a double steal. It confuses the defense just long enough for the run from third to score. And because no tag attempt has yet been made on the runner from first, the Run could score before the defense can make the out on the runner from first. Technically it's legal but it is a travesty in my opinion.

Accorcing to Umpire Bible; The first and most important thing to know about the base path is that there is no such thing as a base path (none exists) until a play is made on a runner. The base path is established when a fielder with the ball attempts to tag a runner. Then, and only then, is there a base path. And the base path is a straight line from the runner's position to the base to which he is advancing or retreating.

Man as a lifetime left handed hitter I have never been that far on the inside of the base path. Then momentum of my swing would not allow for my baserunning line to be like that, especially on a ball hit to the right side that pulls your first steps even further to the outside of the base line. To me, the path that he took while running was an intentional blocking of the ball. Running along that path would serve no other purpose during another baseball play where the ball was hit into the same area and there was not a play at home, or if the ball was hit to another area. Not only is he taking a longer path to get to first base, but whoever covers first base will be in his way when he tries to tag the bag or if a fielder has the ball and tries to tag him out, he is running closer to the fielders that are trying to tag him. The only possible benefit of taking that path is to be in the way of a throw to home plate. Therefore, the intent of taking that running path is to block the ball and that is an intentional act of blocking the ball. I am a Cubs fan, but I honestly have no ill will towards the socks aside from when we play them

This exact thing happened to my team in a little league game back in the 1990s. It was the city championship game. Our coach was pissed and wanted the interference call but the umps said the same thing these umps did. The kid who scored on the play was the tying run and the batter ended up on 2nd base. He then scored the winning run when the next kid singled to right field.

The final and last decision about that rule is made by the umpire, and it is predicated on whether he thinks the play was intentional (which it was but he either didn't see or already bet on the white sox). He made a bad judegment call, and it cost us the game. My opinion could be that he didn't do it intentionally, but it doesn't matter because Grandal admitted that he did it on purpose, and even White Sox fans are bragging about it. I say it cost "Us" because that's my team, not because it affects my opinion on a rule. I don't argue with God about why I need to sit on the toilet for 10 minutes every so often, but I get mad when someone as Taco Bell forces me to do it. Do you get me? The call is dependent on whether it not Grandal intentionally blocked the ball, which he did, and you don't need his admission. Look at the clip again, you can see he starts with a normal path to first base but then suddenly shifts to the left and onto the grass. What Grandal did was simply egregious and a terrible example of sportsmanship. I haven't seen plays that scummy since A Rod.

Bud, watch it again in slow motion. When the ball would have hit the ground the glove is right under it. The ball strikes the tip of the leather and you can see clear deflection of the leather in the pocket and see grass through the window of the pocket which let's you know the glove didn't touch the ground. The ripple of the leather is consistent with the ball striking the very tip of the glove and as the scooping motion continues the ball is caught in the pocket. It was a smooth as fuck clean and fair catch. It's an out and there is absolutely no way to dispute it. The slow motion of the play has a very clear view that shows the ball never touches the ground.
